Thanks for the video Peggy. What a lovely bowl. I started my 5th bowl and decided to use Purple Heart. I was glad to hear it is indeed a dense wood. You do make it look easy, it’s not. And also I get to dig a screw out to tomorrow too.
Purple heart is a tough wood to work with, but the color of the wood makes it very special. If you heat it with a torch or hot air gun it will get that deep purple look. I have turned it and I also like using it as a contrasting wood with maple in making dovetail boxes. I always enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing Peggy.
I have never heard of this wood and I’m amazed how beautiful it is!! You did a great job of showing the true beauty in this piece. I truly appreciate your dedication to this work; dictating each move you made helped me understand what was happening. I’m not a woodturner yet I love to view this craft! Great job! Thank you!!
Good evening, Peggy. I don't see many people turning Purple Heart, nor have I. I have turned Bloodwood. It is also hard but sands very smooth and finishes incredible. Your bowl looks fantastic.
Purple heart is absolutely beautiful, one of my favourite wood to work with. Putting it in sunlight with some heat will just make the purple even more vibrant as well. It browns when worked.
That is beautiful Peggy, and you are right Purple Heart can be a challenge to turn. I would much rather turn that than Bloodwood though. My husband glued up a Bloodwood and Ambrosia Maple blank for me. It killed my tools but man did it turn out pretty. Have to put it back on the lathe though I'm not happy with it. Couldn't get the depth inside I wanted. Need to get myself some carbide tools for that rock hard wood. My gouges took a beating. Happy Mothers Day!
Nice wood turning, Peggy. Suggestion: Drill holes for your face plate screws before installing them. This will help eliminate broken screws; particularly on hard dense woods. Use a little bees wax or paraffin on the screws before putting them in. This will help them go in easier.
Your "plain old purple heart" doesn't seem plain to me Peggy. I think you are right ... sometimes the wood just speaks for itself. Thanks for sharing and I hope your home improvements turned out as well as your beautiful bowl.
Nice turn, especially with all the broken bits to contend with. I have a motorcycling shirt called FREEZE OUT which i wore while turning one cold day and wood chips are now married to that shirt. I figure if i ever get back into resin i will encase it in resin and turn it, lol. Good to see your back up and running.
It brilliant to be back with you again Peggy this is a very beautiful bowl, just a comment on what you were saying about purple heart being a little brown, Gord Rock said on one of his videos that if you set the purple heart in sunshine for a week or so before turning it the sun really brings the purple back out again. I love the grain and colours in the bowl thanks for sharing 👍👍👍
Beautiful bowl!! Love the color. On most hardwoods, I pre drill a hole(smaller than the screw your using) and sometimes I put wax on the screws. Easy going in and easy coming out.
A technique I use to remove a broken screw is to use a parting tool and turn a grove on both sides of the screw. I then break off the wood around the screw and like you I then use vise-grips to remove the screw. I broke two screws in the last piece of Purple Heart I turned. Great piece, very pretty.
Some of us live by for the videos you post. To miss a week with the excuse of: “I had some home improvement projects to work on.” You know the old saying: “Excuses are like buttholes, everyone has one!” I love purple heart. Don’t know what it is but it’s beautiful! If you can expose a half inch of the broken screw trying using a cordless or corded reversible drill motor, tighten the chuck as tight as possible, reverse the drill and back the broken screw out. The other thing is use a pneumatic die grinder or a DREMEL tool to remove the material around the broken screw. Might save you from having to extract a broken drill on top of all the other broken stuff in your piece.
That’s a very nice bowl. 👍 I can’t say that I like turning Purpleheart heart very much, but when I do turn it, no matter what I make, it sales fast. I just turned a cigar ashtray last week and sold it the day after I finished it. I did buy carbide tools to turn Purpleheart because, it took forever to turn my first piece. There are two things that will cause Purpleheart to turn purple, heat and UV light. I normally just expose the piece to sun light for a couple of hours for a couple of days to get it to turn purple, then I apply the finish. Oh, if you put a small piece of Purpleheart in a jar with some denatured alcohol, the alcohol will turn purple after a few days.
If you put the purpleheart in the Sun it will turn purple again. They always turn reddish brown when they're finished. It turns purple through oxidation. I've heard acetone can speed it up but I just leave it on the porch for a couple hours and in a few days it gets very purple again.
Hi Peggy,, When I turned purple heart and before finish, I take a torch and go over the entire surface, and that will turn the wood a deeper purple in color and it makes a big difference. Ron, Chief USCG RET
Miss Peggy, Purple heart is very beautiful to make things with. What i found was the cost is high for these blanks and boards when I turn them in the lathe all those shavings go to the floor put a pain in my chest. I decided to invest in a bowl saver to not waist such a beautiful wood.
Purpleheart has an interesting grain and the color is unusual. I have found that you can increase intensity of the purple with denatured alcohol or heating the wood with a hair dryer, but with exposure to ambient ultraviolet light the purple will eventually turn to brown. Broken screw heads are the reason I don't use a faceplate--too much trouble to remove them.
Here is a tip on those broken screws. Drill pilot holes, then rub either bees wax or bar soap on the threads. They will go in and out much easier. Also you don't have to use such long screws. Consider using a worm drive with wax on it as well.
Getting ready to start a Purple Heart Wood bowl of my own 6x6x3... I had a crazy idea for it in mind but listening to you I think I'm just going to stick with a simple design. Wish me luck!?!
@@thesweetone I made some trim for a counter out of purple heart and after about 6 months the person said what happened to my purple wood. It was a rich brown.
When I broke a screw off in a blank, I used a plug cutter to cut around the broken screw, then snapped the plug /w screw out. Great job on turning your sweater into a custom purple heart turning apron. Put the bowl in the sun for a while, it will turn very purple. Thanks for sharing.
You called Purple Heart plain! 😲But his bowl shows why it is not plain. Really nice job, Peggy! Btw, if you take a heat gun or a hair dryer and carefully heat the wood, it will turn purple. 😉💜
With reference to your screw problem....you don't need them to be more than an inch into the blank...what you do need are thicker screws. When turning you will hardly ever pull/tear out a screw...I turned a large bowl last week which was hot glued onto a block in the chuck. Use a drill driver and not an impact for setting and removal and swap out the screws every month....purple heart is such nice wood!
Thanks , since you didn't show all the removal of the broken screw, this suggestion may work in the future . Instead of using a drill to make a hole try cutting a v shaped gouge around the screw with a carving knife or chisel just low enough to get the vice grips on at an angle. Then unscrew the broken part out using the vice grips as a handle. hope this helps it has always worked for me so far anyway.
Beautiful work Peggy 👏! I saw a video were they left purple heart in a window so the sun would hit it and it brought the purple back out. So maybe you should try that sometime. Did the desk help with the homework? Take care and GOD BLESS 🙏!
If you'll drag the threads of your screws through a piece of wax before you secure them in the faceplate, they'll be much less likely to heat up and snap from the friction of driving them in or removing them. It doesn't take much. A piece of wax from a toilet bowl ring works well and is relatively inexpensive, but you also can use a candle or piece of paraffin. In an extremely hard, dry wood like purpleheart, there is considerably more heat generated than when power-driving screws in a wet piece of maple straight from the forest. The heat will work-harden the screws and make them brittle.
Beautiful piece and recovery of extra metals. Thanks for sharing this insightful video. Wishing you a blessed week and a gentle spring season. Peace dear lady.
Beautiful practicle bowl, should get well used. Just wish purple heart was reddily available here in West Australia, can get it in from over east, but the price, you'd have to get Armourguard to deliver a piece like that. Cheers
Well, I really love that color Peggy. I also like to say it was worth all the work you've done to get the broken screw out. It was fun watching, thank you. 🌹
I enjoy the look of Purple Heart. Yup, it is hard stuff. I am curious as to what tells you it is time to resharpen. I use a lot of carbide but not exclusively.

Yes the purple heart goes every, but the sweater looks great on you! Looks like purple heart would be fun to turn, beautiful work, good job Peggy.
Thanks!✌
Very nice!
Thanks, Doug! ✌️😊
Purple heart will go from purple to a rich dark brown after a time depending on how much it is exposed to sunlight. It is sort of like cherry wood.
Oxygen and uv light aid in its colour change, from that drab to purple to a grey colour over time. It can't be stopped only slowed down.
@@thesweetone I made some trim for a counter out of purple heart and after about 6 months the person said what happened to my purple wood. It was a rich brown.

Thanks, Glen. My apron is one-of-a-kind!
If you leave purple heart wood out before you put any sealer on it will turn more purple it. It takes time but the color/patina is beautiful
Cool! 😎
I describe purple heart as a hard metal with wood like properties. It is the reason that I bought carbide
