Tape In and Tape Out can be used with a subwoofer that has bass management. Tape Out to the sub, and Tape In will have the power-hungry bass frequencies reduced, allowing the amp to work with the upper bass, mids, and treble.

The power amplifier stage, which is responsible for driving the speakers, is Class AB. This hybrid approach allows the Unico Primo to combine the sonic benefits of Class A tube amplification with the efficiency and power of Class AB solid-state amplification.

I have one of these with the matching CD player. Speakers are B&W 705 Signatures. Music to my ears.
As for cost, I got mine from a dealer, ex display stock. £500 each here in the UK. Don't know the $ equivalent but that is a great saving. Speakers were less than half the retail price as well. Right place, right time.
Oh, and mine came with the phono board as well.

I have owned this amp since this January. That's my review in the link at THE STEREO ROOM. It's a sweet powerful amp. It's beautifully made and a solid piece of kit.I would say the only negative is that you really need to play it for about an hour to "warm up". And the bass isn't as "tight" as a nice class D or AB amp. I did trade it in as new condition this spring back to The Music Room and they were selling it for ~ $1450.

Not Class A. Here a quote explains how circuit really works to achieve what Unison Research calls "Dynamic Class A"
"Dynamic class-A" circuit design: "In the circuit," Alessio said, "after the rotary switch input selector, the signal goes to an Alps potentiometer, to a polypropylene capacitor, and then to the ECC83 tube, which provides [active] preamplification and gain. There are no other capacitors in the signal path. The output-stage polarization is regulated by a microchip, which keeps both final MOSFETs always on (with a limited current). We call it 'dynamic class-A' because the MOSFET output is never switched off completely. Obviously, it is not a pure class-A, but it's not standard class-A/B [either]."

Ecc83/12ax7 in the front end of an integrated amp can do 2 things: 1. 12ax7 can can does add harmonic distortion which is very pleasing. 2. Tube stages are resistant to RF and may reduce RF unpleasantness, typically using tube rectification. There are numerous signal tubes (like 12au7 used by CJ and others) that provide a cleaner, lower distortion than the 12ax7...but the sound of the 12ax7 is addicting and is used in classic guitar amplifiers for a reason...the effects cheapaudioman is describing are real and are known characteristics of the 12ax7...but, lets give Unison Research credit for achieving what they have achieved using solid state rectification...

    • @FoxGhost7

That's exactly the problem: you can do whatever you want in a guitar amp because it's part of the total sound of your instrument. But in an stereo amp I want to get out what is put in. I want to hear what that guitar amp sounded and not that guitar amp + my own.
The idea of doing class A is to get less distortion for the price of power. This seems so counter productive.

My wife is not an audiophile, though I think she did get the difference between Bluetooth and CD when I was demoing Dire Straits' "Ride Across the River" a couple of days ago. It's one of my favorite test tracks. And the system I was using for this is my "portable system: 1990s vintage Infinity RS-1 bookshelves, a cheap Sony Blu-ray player as CD transport, and the surprisingly good Fosi Audio DA-2120C. Then I put on Pat Metheney"s "Secret Story" CD. If you aren't familiar with that one, it's probably available to stream from somewhere. Pretty darn good. It was good enough that she actually asked to listen to music instead of watching TV the following day. That's a win at my house. Thanks for another great video.

@@scottboettcherif it was really a pure class A device it would have single ended output in one transistor per channel. This would also be running at full power at any given time regardless of the actual power delivered to the speakers . The maximum achievable theoretical efficiency is 50% or 25% depending on the cuircut topology. Typical real efficiency much below that. So if it can actually deliver 180 per channel you have a 1000 or more watt heater going most of the time . Probably a very nice class AB MOSFET power amplifier that that mimics class A well. With a tube based preamplifier that will give you a taste of the tube colored sound with the tube based sound stage that can be very nice. But the preamplifier will make itself audible and either put a smile😊 on your face or a frown😢 as it won't be likely returnable if you don't like it. That being said it's probably a good well made product with an interesting sound signature😂. The preamplifier will also be tunable with alternative 12AX7 tubes since each manufacturer of these will have a slightly different sound signature😂. Long and short not a low budget option and you will need new tubes on a regular schedule as they operate at high temperature and burn out with use. They also require a burn in time , eventually peak and then slowly degrade😮.

I'll never understand these newer electronics. None of the new integrated amps have any tone controls, balance control, high/low/subsonic filters, loudness compensation contours...... just a volume knob and a source selector. Now we're at the mercy of what the engineers decided we should have..... like a giant Walkman: Either press [PLAY] or don't..... that's all you get. All music isn't produced the same, all room acoustics are not identical....... this is why it's a good idea to have the ability to alter the sound settings. At this point, I'm just going to go with a refurbished Marantz or maybe a Sansui...... I could even try to find an actual graphic equalizer (which nobody even makes anymore). We should have more choices, not fewer.

I'd love to hear reviews about Mark Levinson, Hegel, Pass labs, etc. I don't think you need to change your branding. You can still review lots of cheap audio, but it helps us as customers and viewers to know at what point does the ceiling not hold water anymore and what kind of price range is that?

When you said 80 watts per channel in class A it worried me, it's around 30lbs weight and although only in the preamp section has valve/valves (what we call tubes in the UK). I got a Sugden A21 new in 1972 it produced 12 watts per channel in pure class A, drew around 70 watts continuously from the mains and the heat sinks got too hot to touch.
The Primo is not a true class A amplifier, according to Stereophile it's a kind of sliding class A where the transistors don't entirely turn off - this probably gives much of the smoothness of class A with much less heat.
My Sugden needed quite a bit of work to keep it going in 2002, so has been in limited use since then - but 30 years of excellent service is fine by me.

They're probably a poor match for my small-but-mighty little SMSL AO-300 (thank you, Randy -- I bought it after your review of the AL-200), but there's room in the budget for an amp upgrade if the Operas justify it.

Randy. Saying you don’t need a subwoofer because the amp has so much bass is….well just objectively wrong. You are implying to folks there is an actual BOOST in frequencies below 100hz. An amp is not gonna to change the bass level. Of course it can have small effects on the quality of the bass and overall sound, but not the actual bass level. This is a bad message for people new to the hobby. Still love your content.

It made all the speakers I owned at the time sing to the best of their ability (NHT 1.3, NHT2.5i, StudioLab Reference 1, Neat Mystique II). Smooth and sweet with nice, three-dimensional body. Really regret selling it. I bought an 'upgraded' one at one point, but the upgrade ruined it (thumpy and too piercing).

I passed on this in favor of the Cambridge Audio AXR-100 which I enjoyed every bit as much for 1/3 the price. (And Bluetooth streaming). Epilogue: the AXR crapped out a year or so ago and I replaced it with an Audiolabs 7000A.

I've gone back through your videos about Advance Paris, including the one on the X-A160EVO. And then listening to your careful description of where the Unico Primo will be more subjectively... where you can't say categorically. I think you'd tell me to get the A10 at this point, given I missed the open box 'Primo last week. But I'm also noticing that I'm ignoring my speakers. I'm gonna ask you straight out: is it time to swap out my Zu Dirty Weekend speakers? ...I have a sub to mitigate the missing low end, but still... (Sorry to put you on the spot.)
I have a hierarchy in my head, and I just want to get it right this time... (1) room acoustics, then (2) speakers, then (3) nose reduction between source and speakers. Back in the analog days, you then get the quietest turntable in human possibility. (Heck, back then it was an argument about belt drive vs direct drive, because motor noise vs speed control!)
Since I am too cheap to spend the money to get good looking room acoustics, I'm skipping ahead to speakers. You have a lot of content on speakers, but here I'm pairing specifically with the A10... fyi, later I'll go back for a Geshelli and a "smart home capable"source --Wiim if I had to choose today. I like Wiim's app, and they have all the assistants onboard, so I can speak commands from any room lights, music, temp, reminders, all that stuff.
    Thoughts or comments please?
