Here’s my armchair critique: Whether it was the full intention or not, the visual language seems to be both (at least) semi-ironically adopting and mocking so-called “cowboy culture” (power drill in the place of the six-shooter, presentation of the rodeo dance as a farcical act) while simultaneously placing an image of the cowboy archetype in conjunction with Godzilla rising up out the ocean, presumably turning the cowboy of the West - and what it means to be a traditional cowboy, by extension - into something as dangerous as the nuclear bomb that Godzilla (of the East) represents. So it’s paralleling the “self-made man” construct with the “man-made disaster” paradigm. Reading that imagery as someone in opposition to capitalist structures and American “rugged individualism” (referring back, in-part, to that “cowboy culture”), it reads as incredibly true in its statements. At the same time, this song and video, in conjunction with 80/20SKYBEEF, COWPEOPLE, (really everything from wet milk and RICH SIPS, if not also taco, or at least parts of taco) indicates a desired and willing effort to reclaim and restore (or reconceive of, it never existed) the image of an ecosociologically-responsible, sustainable, and still hard-working-but-respectably-and-emotionally-vulnerable frontiersperson (or COWPEOPLE, as it were). Another way, through the video and alongside the lyrical content, it feels like a culmination of a thesis of the punk-westernist unity, community, and support, as established by the mashed-up fan footage from the BRUH.MP4 video. It’s altogether a rejection of a toxic western ideology, but a rejection that still manages to salvage the some of the aesthetic value of the frontier image, provide a tongue-in-cheek critique of brand image and brand loyalty, and further cement a continued effort to merge the boundaries between typically disparate communities by effectively saying “Hey, come be us!” in a friendly, rather than sinister, way.
