A typical racist Anglo response. I can only infer you feel we deserve the repression our families live within while you vacation on our beaches sipping daiquiris in blissful ignorance. That there still exist some pockets of individuals who support the likes of Fidel, Pinochet, and the rest of those extremist fools-is perverse.

@@bboaventura3 If you take the song to essentially being about understanding--and to a certain point--accepting the evil within yourself--then perhaps there is merit to your point about "not understanding the song." IE: I get what you are saying, however, I still posit that it took courage to play that song in a place where every lyric is analyzed and lyrics like those in this one can easily land you in a ton of trouble. You are right to point out the fact that there is nuance in the song, but you are ignorant (I don't mean that as a "putdown" but rather as in "you don't understand what it's like) as to what it's like to live your day-to-day life in a place like Cuba, North Korea, etc. At the end of the day, it's a bitch. A huge, awful, crazy bitch.

Have dvd of this gig and love it. Apart from the performance of the greatest rock/blues band ever, I love that the cameras got amongst the Cubans who showed their absolute joy. Remember, this is the first time in 50 years that Cubans have been exposed to this, and boy, they sure showed their enjoyment. I'm in my 70s and have seen Stones live many times and felt this is one of their best concerts, even without ultra lavish stage sets. Again, great.

Ivan Loscher.............................

It all started in the Venezuelan plains in 1966. It was a time of worldwide turmoil, but life in rural Apure remained basically the same. The highlight of that year was a marked shortage of work that had been growing since the previous year. Unemployment was very much felt in the town of Cunaviche, home of Jaime Martinez, a joropo lover and possessor of an innate mastery of playing the maracas.
In the middle of the year Jaime was fired from the hacienda where he worked regularly. Unable to find employment in Cunaviche, Jaime accepted a cousin's offer to work as a laborer in Puerto La Cruz, loading and unloading merchandise from ships arriving at the marina. The most precious object he took with him when he left were his maracas.
Jaime was 23 years old at the time, and had always been a person with an adventurous spirit. Nothing bound him, since his parents had died years before and he had no siblings or girlfriend. It was then that he came to make a decision that would change everything.
After working a few months in the port for a meager salary, one day Jaime left as a stowaway on a ship going to Europe. He was carrying some food, three changes of clothes and his maracas. Halfway through the trip he was discovered, but the crew helped him and gave him some food that he paid for with work.
A couple of weeks later Jaime landed in a winter London, not knowing more than two words of English. He spent days of hunger and cold, regretting his untimely decision, but somehow he survived. He slept in parks, swept alleys of restaurants in exchange for some leftovers and sometimes touched maracas for a few coins.
One night, in the middle of a snowfall that forced him off the street in search of shelter, Jaime managed to get into an old theater and hide in a dusty attic full of old furniture, lecterns and broken instruments. He made that place his home, thinking it was abandoned. For two weeks no one entered the compound.
It happened that one night Jaime was woken up by a scandal, a sound of static, a drummer and voices that were arguing loudly. Music began to play, something Jaime had never heard before and couldn't even put into words. He felt the vibration in the floor, the walls and then in his chest and head. It was rock and roll.
It was the Rolling Stones rehearsing the material that would eventually become the Beggar's Banquet album. The song that played was "Simpathy for the devil".
Jaime was a little bit amazed. He couldn't understand what he was hearing, but the music was too rhythmic, it was almost primitive. It provoked him to dance, to applaud to the rhythm of the song. In a reflex action, he looked for the maracas and began to play accompanying the song. The acoustics of the theater brought the sound of the maracas to the stage. An angry Mick Jagger stopped the rehearsal again and again until everyone realized that the strange sound was coming from the attic.
Two attendees went upstairs and met a frightened Jaime, convinced him to come down to the stage with the maracas. Keith Richards and Bill Wyman knew some Spanish, so Jaime was able to make himself understood. Obviously the man was an illegal homeless man with no way to return to his country.
The most impressed of the clan was Jagger. He was fascinated by the maracas and asked Jaime to play them over and over again. This is how this "llanero" man entered the history of Rock. Jagger and Richards felt that Simpathy for the devil was missing something and that they had found the missing piece in the maracas.
The band gave Jaime shelter, food and clothing. He was then taken to the recording studio, and the maracas we heard in Simpathy's introduction are played by him. In the album credits he was given an English version of his name : James Martins.
A month after that night in the theater, Jaime Martins was on his way to Venezuela, to his village, Cunaviche. The Stones arranged the details of his return and gave him a good amount of money, enough for Jaime to look for a house of his own and set up his business.
The maracas became one of Jagger's favorite instruments, and he learned to play them from Jaime.
Now, the next time you hear "Simpathy for the devil" remember with pride that those maracas that sound are played by a Venezuelan... a llanero. Ivan Loscher............................

    Sympathy For The Devil
    The Rolling Stones
Please allow me to introduce myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste
I've been around for a long, long years
Stole million man's soul an faith
And I was 'round when Jesus Christ
Had his moment of doubt and pain
    Made damn sure that Pilate
Washed his hands and sealed his fate
    Pleased to meet you
    Hope you guess my name
    But what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game
    Stuck around St. Petersburg
When I saw it was a time for a change
    Killed Tsar and his ministers
    Anastasia screamed in vain
    I rode a tank
    Held a general's rank
    When the blitzkrieg raged
    And the bodies stank
    Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name, oh yeah
    Ah, what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, oh yeah
    I watched with glee
    While your kings and queens
    Fought for ten decades
    For the gods they made
    I shouted out
    Who killed the Kennedys?
    When after all
    It was you and me
    Let me please introduce myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste
And I laid traps for troubadours
Who get killed before they reached Bombay
    Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, oh yeah
    But what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, oh yeah, get down, baby
    Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, oh yeah
    But what's confusing you
Is just the nature of my game
Just as every cop is a criminal
    And all the sinners saints
    As heads is tails
    Just call me Lucifer
'Cause I'm in need of some restraint
    So if you meet me
    Have some courtesy
Have some sympathy, and some taste
    Use all your well-learned politnesse
Or I'll lay your soul to waste, mm yeah
    Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, mm yeah
    But what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, mm mean it, get down
    Woo, who
    Oh yeah, get on down
    Oh yeah
    Aah yeah
Tell me baby, what's my name?
Tell me honey, can ya guess my name?
Tell me baby, what's my name?
I tell you one time, you're to blame
    What's my name
Tell me, baby, what's my name?
Tell me, sweetie, what's my name?
