My Video Essay on what I believe caused the fall of Mortal Kombat 1. Many of the issues were avoidable, much of the outrage is justified, but some of it isn't really fair.
Also, to be clear, when I talk about “The Kommunity didn’t want X or hated Y” it’s not coming from a perspective of “They were in the wrong for this”.
It’s simply stating the truth and what happened, like how Laserdiscs were objectively better than VHS, but the market chose VHS. Not really a debate of Right & Wrong, it’s just what happened

I'm sad of the possibility that the 3D characters era may suffer the fate of being put to the back burner for making future roster, because the mismanagement of NRS and WB. Some of these characters haven't been playable in over a decade and the team for the most part did a good job updating them to modern day making them essentially new characters to a newer audience.
We went backwards with customization. 1 gear piece vs 3 piece. 4 intros/outros vs 1 intro/outro etc..

People were complaining about the level of gear customization so they toned it down and people are still complaining.
I honestly wanted to see Great Kung Lao's journey, but they skipped over it. Oh, well.
As others have pointed out, why in the hell have they twice now (mk11, and mk1) use their limited dev time to build an entirely new system instead of building upon the foundation that mk9 laid and mkx continued. A system that while of course some details had the community split, no one had an issue with the system itself not that I can recall at least. Then mk11 comes out and they totally change breakers, X-rays, the meter system, armor, and add handholdy match deciding features like KBs and the previously mentioned changes meter system played into that heavily as well. Mk11 and mk1 stale unfinished products no one asked for that held the interest of the competitive scene about as long as the casuals. What do NRS be smoking on
If they went with Kotals Raiden's and Boraicho MKX ending and added on top of everything they had at the time.
MK11 fucked everything with the time travel. Imo THAT should've been the game they bring back 3D characters if it was going to lead to some multiverse b.s.
Personally I’m glad they went another direction since we did have the krypt 3 times in a row. Although I’m disappointed Cyrax, Sektor, and Ermac still aren’t playable on the flip side it’s nice to see Smoke and Kenshi back as playable characters (I would ask for Stryker but I genuinely don’t think it will happen).
Actually I like homelander and Omni man as dlc choices, just not peacemaker. DC has a large list of rogues and heroes that would fit better in MK, like Deathstroke, Harley Quinn, King Shark, Bane, Lobo, Constantine, Black Manta, Lex Luthor, Ares, Doctor Fate, Raven, et cetera
I have mixed emotions about that game because I love that game a lot. I am a big Mortal Kombat fan. I have been since I was a kid but I don’t know they ruined Havik because he’s no longer the Celric of chaos Raiden is just Liu Kang now there’s no new ninjas like you already said, and one of my favorite characters that made Mortal Kombat 11 so good to me, Noob Saibot was gone. Both of the new version of scorpion isn’t as good Hanzo and honestly what I would’ve done to make a new era will make all the ninjas Japanese meaning they were now actually ninjas, but now the only Japanese character got Kenshi and I don’t like Kenshi very much. Maybe I just have some weird things pan in Japanese culture but I really do miss we having one really cool Japanese character. Also, there are no more revenants oh, really kick out evil characters like dark Raiden. The game is still really fun and cool, but I do miss the old ones. Also, an issue with Mortal Kombat game is that there’s never a a fighter. It was just being one character that would be so cool but they brought it in Armageddon and they just basically forgot about it and it made me really sad
Also, there is no cool skins from the movies, the old movies and the new ones. I say that because I know people have wanted that.
I think saying everyone is a bit of a generalization. I am happy that they rebooted from 11 because I think the changes that were made post MK9 were so bad that I just did not want to continue playing in that particular timeline

I hate it NRS played with time resets/ multiverses. It was okay when they did on 9 but once they put themselves at a corner and didn't know what to do, they played the reset angle again. Didn't in MK11 it was said Kronika has been resetting the timeline so she could get the outcome she wanted? What's the point in that?
MK11 is my favorite fighting game. Ever since I first saw MK1nothing about it appealed to me. From the graphics, story, character designs, customization (or lack thereof) gameplay changes, and even DLC - none of it does it for me. Not surprised to see it fall off so hard and fast. Their annoying habit of changing everything from one game to the next bit them in the ass. It's like they think they'll get bonus points for repeatedly reinventing the wheel instead of building off of what worked last time.
Kameo system makes 0 sense.
Why would any good character help and evil character, and vice versa?
The same reason why Johnny Cage is able to brutally beat and murder his wife and daughter. Gameplay.
Biggest complaint for me is that there is no character depth everyone does the same combos, moves and animations can get stale

It's a shame the game turned out this way. I was insanely excited when they announced it, I kept up with the Kombat kasts and reveal trailers, and then the game came out and I just feel so underwhelmed with it overall. The gameplay is fun, the story was pretty good. But other than that, the game just feels empty.
The only thing that really matters to me is that there's no tag team like 9, one of the best parts of mortal kombat in general gone for yearsss
Yeah I was pretty pissed when they put the JCVD skin in the store after I preordered it just for that skin.
Mk9 didn't have any new characters except skarlet and people complained about to many new characters in mkx and mk11 and now people are complaining about no new characters its like you can't please anyone
Idk why but I think you also forgot that while being one of the Big 3 of Fighting Games, the other 2 went with aggressive offense mechanic (SF6 Drive and Tekken 8 Heat) but MK on other hand, went with assist(Kameo) mechanic instead
I feel from 9 to x 11 and 1 the best was X. DLC was good crypt was fun factions and thier fatalities. The 3 styles mixed things up.
I have always been a MK fan since the first game. I knew all the lore of the original timeline.
I really think the last time MK lore was good was in deception. Deception added all those interesting new realms with plenty of story possibilities. The writers had no reason to write themselves into a corner with armageddon. That was the death of lore.
MK9 is the last game I consider to have the MK series soul but even in the game the story was dumb because they just had reseted the timeline and then the writers went and killed almost all the earth's defenders for shock value.
That's the problem with MK writing. They will always keep killing everyone and restarting the timeline infinite times and now nothing matters anymore. No one can get attached to the story of a series where nothing matters. It just makes a waste all the effort they put in cutscenes and the story mode of those games. And it will keep happening endlessly because even the writers of the games think they are a joke and that nothing matters.
4:34 Now I have the game but I haven’t played it yet but I will say that a problem that’s similar to that is the skins that were in the story mode like the Liu Kang jacket skin or Johnny Cage’s amor suit that he wore in the story mode. Those skins should’ve been unlockable when you complete the chapters that the skins show up in instead of waiting 3 months for the Liu Kang jacket skin to be available.
$40 for a few more characters is ridiculous. And Invasions mode being “a bit grindy” is a huge understatement. I’m quitting without getting the platinum because leveling up Kameos takes too long, never found a “challenge token”, and the pyramid mesa isn’t even there to play anymore.
Respectfully I mostly disagree. I think for the most part ppl ARE ok with the roster and about 75% of the story. I think the issue is the reward system. If the game was riddled with skins, gear, and experience wasn’t impossible to gain ppl would be less harsh to it. Nobody wants to sit around for 2 months in season 3 only able to unlock different shades of blue for 2 costumes we’re already tired of. And yea there should be a mode where you fight without cameos, I don’t see why that’s an issue at all, it’s not like it’s hard for them to do.
My biggest issue with kameos is that you don't get to actually play as any of them.
All it is, is a huge middle finger to fans of these characters. (Especially characters like Sareena and Darrius whom haven't been playable since Armageddon)

Idk. I like it. I like learning new combos and stuff. It’s gonna take me a while to learn everyone’s combos and different ways too do them and mix them up as well as the kameos. Plus I like earning my dragon crystals (even though it takes FOREVER) BUTTTT IM HOPING they bring in custom characters after aftermath drops.

But it does have its bull 💩 as well. Like the store? They said it’d be updated every week with new content and it’s just the same old thing. Most of them we can get in the shrine.
I definitely disagree with KP1 being an underwhelming lineup. Ermac is a top 3 ninja and Takeda was one of the best NRS newcomers to come to MK. Quan Chi I didnt care for that much but after seeing his trailer and playing him for a long time, Im starting to love him. His new era presentation of using portals and that eldritch monster for disjoints really sold New Era Quan Chi for me
All valid but I feel the roster is perfect or close to it.
The SF characters never meant much to me. Keeping it focused between mostly outworld amd Shaolin characters is what it's needed to be. Sure the cyborgs are great but I love it most when the story and cast kept it more mystical.

There is a kameo that nulifies all projectiles some can help perform unblockables and infinites. 4:03 People hate invasions because it is nothing like konquest. A bit grindy is a under statement. And it is a walking line simulator fighting CPU opponents with modifiers. How is that fun? Deception a game in the PS2 era has a better single player mode than the modern day 70 dollar game. 5:56 that was intended NRS just worded it poorly

I don't care about the story. I like the 3D era characters were added. Kamios can go to hell but I am getting used to it. I played Invasions for 5 hours today and only finished two mesas. Invasions wastes my time. I like more fighters for sale. I hate the fact three of them are not Mortal Kombat characters. Fuck Ommi Man, Homelander and Peacemaker
I would rather have Sonya,Cyrax and Sektor. Fuck microtransactions.
The gameplay is great. But NRS and WB need to clean up the mess.
It may be an unpopular opinion, but the moment I saw the first gameplay I was super disappointed. I was expecting a true next gen MK title running on UR5. I hate the cartoonish style. I genuinely prefer the way MK11 looks to this. On top of that the input delay feels worse than previous titles.
