I think I've seen Nicolas Bras do a TED talk with a somewhat similar instrument, but it used a hose he breathed air into in order to inflate the can drum. I think this drum isn't using inflation. It seems to be using some sort of mechanism to push a circular hoop upward into the drum face? I think?
This is incredible! What a work of genius! One thing to try - take a ridged plastic juice cap and place it on the head (hold it down with a finger of your left hand). Then you can "zip" the ridges with your thumb/index fingernails. It makes a fun "zipper" sound effect. I use this technique with a simple cardboard box, but I can imagine how it would sound with this drum!
Around 5:40 you slide the magnets around while playing. The gesture you made ! It felt like you were playing chess in there. Since there are magnetic chessboards, I guess this could be a strange way to record games. :D
My initial thought was this sounds like a South Indian came up with it... and after checking out Stephane's channel... I think I'm right, Vanaakum to Carnatic music, and also un beau grand merci pour nous acceuillir à un instrument assez unique!
This is a dream come true for drummers who not only want to play out off time, but also out off tune. 🥺 All kidding aside, you are brilliant and this is a great instrument.
I'd love to see a full-on dubstep or a breakbeat rhythm played on this thing! The ability to draw out the same effects as electronic studio effects is so crazy.
Top magnets with short lengths of different kinds of small chain attached: ballchain, toilet lever chain, etc.... Also motorized mallets.... ......Spring reverbs......... Sympathetic strings......
The almost electronic sounds are incredible. I do wonder how durable this will be over time, I can imagine the membrane losing flexibility and becoming stretched and floppy over time, especially when tensioned for a while.
@@buzhichun I could be wrong if the drum can't be disassembled, or something. But pretty sure. I was disappointed to see that the price is so high. I think I'll diy something similar instead, tbh.
have to be careful but just hold a lighter under the head about 3" or so and wave it back and forth slowly for a handful of seconds. might want to hold the pedal down? could take a couple of passes. A lamp is a useful alternative.Make sure you remove the lamp shade. haha.... IF your not careful you will make a hole. Works for calfskin and mylar.... A new head is always better. But that's how you extend a drum heads life.
Such a cool creation. I love the tones warbling and wobbling on the way to and from that changes with the tightness of the skin (or whatever material the drum top is made of). It gives some really cool sounds depending on your playing style and you don't get that kind of direct feedback from a lot of instruments. Most instruments are in a steady state of being and you get a certain sound out of them regardless of who is playing it but this is different in how the instrument responds to your individual inputs and playing style. I really like how it sounds.
Redefines the meaning of drumming. As drums once were, one is essentially creating rhythmic accentuations in time. The drums' function is exclusive to the beat. Yes, we can tune drum our drums to match a C or a C#, etc. (because any acoustic instrument carries it's own physical resonance.) But we drum ONLY to the given tone; the drummer can't change the fundamental harmonic, per se. Therefore, in drumming, pitch was always an after-thought. But this ingenious instrument now blurs the line between melody and beat. A sort of groove that sings. More than brilliant, I'd go so far as to say this is a paradigm-shift in musical percussion itself. Hallelujah!
So you got a drum that can make many different sounds from a friend, and the first thing you can think of is modifying it to make even more weird sounds. Your creativity is unstoppable!
The transition between bongo and middle East drum sounds is incredible. Great new tool for the stool drooler in your life! Your friend should make some and see if a music store would show them off.
Dayum the natural sound of that buzz what in the heck, Buzz on fipple is also amazing but buzz on a drum is epic haha, I remember playing a badly tuned cheap snare and it would make this buzz ! Great to see it with blimmin range 😂
Awesome and amazingly cleaver instrument. I love the magnet idea and am anxious to experiment with it on my frame drum and darbuka! A whole new field of sonic possibilities!

3:05 sounds like an acoustic 808 bass drum
This instrument needs to be famous
This instrument will be famous, every musician needs this instrument!
So, a kettledrum head with a snare bottom. neat.
I love these little but transformative tweaks on centuries old insturments.
Holy crap, where has this drum been all my life?!?! Wow, that is amazing
You should be getting a commission . I can't recall seeing a better demo of equipment in my life. I'm like, dude, take my money!
Thanks!
I played timpani in a symphony orchestra, the same principle here)
That's incredible, never seen anything like it before

very interesting!!
This is one of the coolest instruments I've ever seen!
Me too, I can't wait to have my own model!
the part with your friend at the end there was pure delight to my ears

First I thought that it's like all in one jungle/drum'n'bass -workstation, but then you went industrial/experimental! Great!
Le coup des aimants est incroyable, je n'avais jamais vu ça sur une batterie classique.
Beau projet !
Ce sont des idées du créateur de ce tambour, j'ai juste exploré très rapidement, il va falloir que j'y passe encore beaucoup de temps!
This instrument is sooooo creative and capable. Huge props to the guy that made it, and your perfect demonstration!
Tympani tuning for hand/stick drums. And with the magnets, it's next level. This is absolutely amazing.
Right?
acoustic 808, awesome

Back in the late 60s I bought a floor tom that had a timpani type of pedal system. I wish I still owned it!
Yeah! Someone made made it! Had a similar idea for the tuning system. Great to see it!
This instrument could do ANYTHING!
Top magnets with short lengths of different kinds of small chain attached: ballchain, toilet lever chain, etc.... Also motorized mallets.... ......Spring reverbs......... Sympathetic strings......
Yes a lot more to explore!
thank you thank you thank you. maker of instruments, never thought drums could do that
Yes that's a perfect one, simple and so many possibilities!
The almost electronic sounds are incredible. I do wonder how durable this will be over time, I can imagine the membrane losing flexibility and becoming stretched and floppy over time, especially when tensioned for a while.
I don't think it is a problem, but I don't have the experience, you can ask the creator!
It's a standard drumhead, so totally replaceable!

This is the 21 century's talking drum!
I like the feature that you can control snare by foot.
Well that certainly eliminates the need to put your elbow on the drum head and lean down to raise the pitch.
Mark the nodes on that drum head for precise magnet positioning! This is fantastic!
Yes, for now I still have to explore a lot, but I'll mark my favorites!
It's an analogue drum synth!

Yes it is a very generous instrument, every technique sounds great on it!
damn, like a Timpani and Snare in one, that's sick
Thanks for your passion and the work to share it with us! 🥁
Thanks!
Wow, at the end. Nice drumming.
Reminds me of an African talking drum.
Love your experiments with the magnets.
I want one 🙂
Yes Stephane is a great player! The link is in the description if you want your own!

Thanks for sharing. A homemade drum synth without electricity! I like how it can emulate a "bass tabla" too.
I have an old pearl set with twist-to-tune and I so want to go try some of those magnet techniques on it
This sounds INCREDIBLE!!
The distortion mods were siiiiiick!
That's so cool, I think I'll build one.
nice solo at the end, the sound is cool it sounds can anchieve ancient and some improvised new instrument
That is a serious palette of sounds. Nice idea !
This is very advanced and amazing at that.
So you got a drum that can make many different sounds from a friend, and the first thing you can think of is modifying it to make even more weird sounds. Your creativity is unstoppable!
The magnet pack is a creation from Guillaume too, he told me how to use it on his instrument, I just try and film!

Incroyable cette instrument
Fabulous.
This thing is AWESOME!
Right?
This does everything a canon wishes it could do. What a super versatile and interesting design.
It's like a whole wired-up drum set in one instrument -- amazing ...
Build one! That's what we're here for, man 😄
Fantastic drum instrument.
Omg so fun! This channel had so many new sounds!!
Just wow!!!

The tension pedal is really really cool!
Such a cool design!
Amazing
Reminds of DialTune drums. Snare drums you can quickly tune for different sounds. This is a super cool concept.
Ever hear of the drum company WTS?
(Welch Tuning Systems?)
Mr. Nicolas your website link does not work. It Gets error for me in Brazil. Thanks.
That is one cool drum!
Thanks for the ideas! Working on an electronica project with live drums...will most definitely use that magnet trick :)
That is bonkers and I want one!
This is amazing. What a simple and genius idea. I will not be surprised at all if this will become a standard instrument.
I'm sure it is a must have for many musicians!

Woah! Absolument génial!

Oh man those sounds with them magnets! So cool! Reminds me so much of music in LISA game.
The normal keytam sounds like a timpani but with wires is a snare drum.
SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!!!
that drum is absolutely mindblowing, what a crazy piece of musical engineering
You are my musical spirit animal💛
Very impressive!
Also now my new favourite drum. Not going to lie I was hoping you made a sample pack for this. So many cool beats could be made with this.
This video is also a support to Guillaume for the release of the instrument, but we are working on a Soundpaint version!
