    I'm so glad I can just search for this game on RUclips on a complete whim and someone's made a whole ass essay on it for me to watch, RUclips can be magical sometimes

    Puzzle Challenge gives me so much nostalgia, I liked the music in this game more than the OG stuff, and it looked so good. If you haven’t seen this game on a gameboy screen, and you can do that, you absolutely should. I also just think it’s a very good game, if you like them.

    The omitted poor Cyndaquil appears twice on the back cover 😂😂. I like that intro tbh (really enjoy that artstyle). Kudos to you for playing this game. I remember seeing the box cover on Sears amd Kmart. Looking forward for the Stadium 2 vid.

    Egm had editors who were obsessed with tetris attack and said we had to ban it to get work done. Needless to say, they loved the pokemon versions and still said tetris attack if by a different name is still their favorite puzzle game ever (at the time. I don't think anything else beat it out before the magazine ended).

  • @Thuase
    @Thuase Год назад +3

    Specifically searched for this game for the nostalgia and found this video thank you. Not mentioned in the video much, but the puzzle mode with the limited turns was the best part of the game as well as challenge mode after clearing the game. The true end game of puzzle challenge. I have fond memories of ignoring my family at a family reunion and wondering off by myself and playing this game at the park at 10 years old.

    It really does have great graphics for a gbc game. The game itself reminds me of the free e-shop pokemon games on the 3ds

    Just wanted to pop a comment saying I really enjoy this series. The way you’re attempting to look at the games in their historical context, reading back covers imagining what it would be like to not already know what these things are - I think that’s a cool and valuable perspective to offer that I don’t see other people doing in the same way

    • @Paraspectre
      @Paraspectre  2 года назад

      Why thank you! Sometimes I wonder if I spend too long looking at the boxes but I do think it’s an important part. Less so nowadays with how there aren’t even manuals anymore, but it was a big thing to open a new game then and see everything

    Really interesting how the N64 Puzzle League seems to take up the lion’s share of the attention. I have to imagine that in territories where this game released second, folks weren’t compelled to get it if they already had Puzzle League.

    I think the presentation difference between Pokemon Puzzle League and Pokemon Puzzle Challenge is why Challenge is more enticing. The graphics, music, and effort put into Challenge are so much better. League felt really cheap in comparison aside from that custom anime intro. Particularly the graphics are amazing. Those Pokemon win-loss animations are incredible.
    Also, for someone whose mascot has a 4x Flying to wind you sure do talk a lot of smack about Falkner.

XD That said, I don't remember much about the game itself, so this was nice to see. Looking forward to the Pokemon Stadium 2 Paraspective, now that was a fun time>:)

  • @Freddie7010
    @Freddie7010 2 года назад +2

    I loved this game as a kid! Much better than Puzzle League in my opinion, largely thanks to the great dpad on the GBC and the even better one on the GBA SP. I much preferred the Gold/Silver chiptune remix soundtracks in Challenge over the annoying voices in League as well and the story mode (on Intense difficulty) was tougher to boot. Challenge still holds up today as a tough but fair, fast-paced puzzle game with good music, whereas League is a bit hard to go back to.

    • @Paraspectre
      @Paraspectre  2 года назад +1

    Would have been interesting to see some N64-GB integration like what happened with Mario Golf and a few other games. Perhaps at one point they considered having the Kanto characters appear if you linked to the N64 game. Bit of a stretch given how western-focused the N64 game was.”, though.

    • @Paraspectre

      What are your reasons? I’m pretty curious since I felt the same way but couldn’t articulate why.

    • @martindouge1947
      @martindouge1947 2 года назад

      @@Paraspectre I think it feels a lot more cohesive overall, both within itself and with the video games. The animated sprites add a lot of life compared to the anime key art, the sprite-work and the backgrounds are gorgeous and colorful, and the whole thing just meshes well together. I also prefer the simple 8-bit colored blocks than the plasticky blocks of the N64.
      I get that exploiting the N64's capacity could be interesting, but it ends up feeling like carboard cuts and plastic cubes, with a focus on the anime that makes it feel more like a piece of merch rather than a game thay can stand on its own. Kind of like the Pokémon board games, or sticker sheets.
      Also, I don't remember a lot of Puzzle League's music, but I do remember a lot of Puzzle Challenge's music.
      I could say this is pink-tinted by the nostalgia glasses if I weren't still playing Puzzle Challenge as a passtime here and there. It's a snappy, vibrant puzzle game that you can play on the go (that last point being something that its N64 counterpart can't do)

    • @therecognitionscene3771
      @therecognitionscene3771 2 года назад +1

      @@martindouge1947 fwiw puzzle league’s music was, as far as I can remember, exclusively compressed instrumentals of songs from the 2 B A Master album/Pikachu’s Jukebox segment, so Puzzle Challenge is already going to have a leg up for the originality.
      I had both of these games as a kid; I wasn’t good at either of them but I did like them quite a bit. I have more nostalgia for Puzzle League, which as a kid was cool bc of the ties to the anime, but I also remember probably liking Puzzle Challenge more at the time. Of course, the first Pokémon game I actually owned was Gold, so there might be some Johto bias in that too :p
