Ceni was as good as a goalkeeper can be. He won the prize of best goalkeeper of Brazil 7 times (no other goalkeeper got more prizes). He won the prize of best goalkeeper in the Americas 6 times (no other goalkeeper did better). He is the goalkeeper who had the highest number of penalty keeping in the history of the sport. He was nominated to the Balon D’Or 3 times despite being a goalkeeper and playing outside Europe. He was decisive in winning the clubs World Cup against Liverpool, which had just made a phenomenal campaign and won the UCL. He was part of the Brazilian squad who won the World Cup in 2002. He was part of the São Paulo squad who beat Barcelona in 1993. He has the cleanest slate of a goalkeeper. The guy is an absolute legend and would be mentioned in every GOAT debate had he played in Europe. And he devoted himself to the same club his entire life.
Suffice it to say he is the greatest idol of a team who had players like Casemiro, Rivaldo, Kaka, Adriano, Cafu, Cicinho, Daniel Alves, Alexandre Pato, Müller, Tostão, Cerezo, Falcão, Careca, Raí, Leônidas (the guy who invented the bicycle kick), among others… Rogério Ceni is the greatest idol in the history of São Paulo, a team who has beat European clubs every time it played against an European club, be it Barcelona, Milan or Liverpool. People outside Brazil wouldn’t believe everything this guy has achieved.
As a coach, he's also a legend on Fortaleza, since he was one of the main contributors for the team to reach the first division of the brazilian championship and the level at wich it is now (playing continental championships like the South-American cup and the Libertadores).
Two times the best player of brazilian championship, not best goalkeeper, the best PLAYER, this guy have the most crazy accomplishments in the footbal history

The only thing on my mind on those moments was "Ffs, man. He's gonna score again". I'm really glad to see him covered here.
It's so good to see this legend getting some recognition outside of Brazil. If you haven't already, check his performance against Universidad Catolica in 2013. That is to me the prime performance of a goalkeeper in football history, we were supposed to have been destroyed but the man just said "well, nope, not today".
Rogério is widely considered one of the best players, if not the single best player in Brasileirão history (not just keeper, player). This is a league that saw the likes of Pelé and Zico. I'm a Corinthians fan (a rival of São Paulo), but i really appreciate this video. A lot of Brazilian players that never played in Europe don't receive the amount of honour they deserve. Pele, Garrincha, Ceni, Zico, Dinamite (the last two played, but aren't remembered). Again, thanks for talking about our legends in Brazilian football 💙
Never heard of Dinamite but Zico is an absolutely legend in Europe. What I've heard and read Garrincha was better and more loved than Pele. But actually I can't consider Pele as the goat, one of the best ever yeah. But when you play all of your life some jungle league you can't be considered being the best.
Rogerio's an absolut legend. When there was a foul or penalty for São Paulo, it was almost like an instant goal celebration. Greatest idol of my time as a supporter. He just had the bad luck to play at the same time as Dida and Marcos, so he never had a real shot in the brazilian national team. He's a coach now. Sadly didn't worked out in SPFC, so they parted ways. But as a supporter, i'll never stop admiring him as a player.
I'm a Palmeiras fan, mostly because of my family, but growing up in the late 2000s I almost switched teams for São Paulo because of Ceni. Even though Palmeiras also had a crazy iconic goalkeeper (Marcos, from the 2002 world cup) no one come close to being as legendary as Ceni in Brazilian football to me. Watching him scoring free kick goals in the Libertadores every year was a blast. One of the best memories from my childhood.
Almost switching teams because of one player? You aren't a good supporter then. I'm from Finland and I still absolutely love Jari Litmanen but I could never switch my team because of him.
Rogerio Ceni was a freaking Beast!! I don't know how people from other countries doesn't know him. Being Brazilian and not a São Paulo supporter, i always enjoyed watching Rogerio playing, specially as a kid who also was a goalkeeper. He was a beast, and deserves a LOT of respect.
I have been following football since the early 90s, and I say without a shadow of a doubt: Rogério Ceni was one of the top 3 goalkeepers I have ever seen play. And the other two obviously were not capable of doing many of the incredible things he did. He was complete. Excellent as a goalkeeper in all the fundamentals that the position demands, a beast as a free-kick and penalty taker, and a playmaker (he provided 7 direct assists for goals, not to mention the chances that the attackers wasted). He also greatly helped the team in building up play from the back with great efficiency. He was also a great leader and a role model both on and off the field. He was greatly underrated throughout his career, of the limited opportunities he had with the Brazilian national team and never being seriously approached by top European clubs. In my opinion, this does not diminish the great football player he was. It would be only fair if FIFA awarded him some honorary award for everything he has done for the sport. I dare say that if it weren't for him, we wouldn't have witnessed the great revolution in the goalkeeper position that we saw with Neuer, for example, where the goalkeeper became important as a player who helps with their feet and plays in a more advanced position on the field. *He is the greatest idol of goalkeeper Ederson, to name just one. The nickname "myth" is well-deserved and accurate for him.
No, he’s not - Neur, Cassilas, Kahn, Buffon, van der Saar - there I already mentioned 5 keepers who were better than him without even trying. If I did try, I could name 20
Watching from brazil, congrats!

00:13 Good to see our South African Oscar Masuluke in this video. That acrobatic kick in the final minute if injury time gives me goosebumps every time I see it. 😍😍🥰
Finally a non-brazilian highlighting Ceni's career. I simply cant understand why people mention Chilavert instead of Ceni when talking about GK'S who take set pieces
I'm very very proud to have a São Paulo jersey signed by him. I grew up watching him making history in São Paulo FC, and I literally cried when he announced his retirement, and played for the last time. He said: "When I die, I want my ashes to be spread here at Morumbi" (Cicero Pompeu de Toledo Stadium, in Morumbi Neighborhood). He loves this team. And, despite not being a good team coach, he was a legendary GK. I admire him a lot, and this team also.
Fantastic video! Even though you covered so many historical aspects of his carreer, you still missed 2 important aspects: his fundamental role as sweeper keeper, being a pioneer in the role; and his fantastic match vs Universidad Católica, arguably his best match ever at the ripe age of 40 years old.
I'm so glad you made this video, o Mito really deserves world recognition as a great goalkeeper. After he broke his ankle he was still very good but it's those previous years in his prime that was really a remarkable sustained performance. The fact they beat the unbeaten Liverpool and the saves he made that game just makes it pretty clear that at his peak he was a top goalkeeper in the world.
Great video about my favourite football player of all time. Thanks for the regognition of brazilian stars. One last thing missed in the video was one of the most impressive games of Rogerio's carrer in 2013 against Universidad Catolica. He was 40 years old and made the best goalkeeper's match in football history that day.
If you look just to goals scored, it's impressive... but if you, also, look to how few free kicks he wasted, it's easy to say that this lad was the ultimate free kicker. A full ladder above the second best considering that guys like Juninho and Messi only converted into goals less than the half of their attempts. Rogério probably converted between 2/3 to 3/4 of his kicks
I remember watching some games, when there was a foul near the penalty area, the opposite teams always started complaining and cursing at the referee like he just called a penalty

A lot of magic things happens in Brazilian football, we didn't win 5 World cups by luck. This is one of the best stories, great video! It got me emotional as a São Paulo fan
Marcos was also a legendary gk. There's so much discussion about this, but the overall consense is that both are legends and Brazil was well-served on 2002.
As a São Paulo supporter, thank you for this video. Rogério indeed was a mith. Actually he is a coach now, with significant titles in Brazil. Congratulations for covering all important episodes and controversy’s in his career.
I'm a Vasco da Gama fan who watched the second half o Ceni's carreer. I can't explain for those who didn't live it how is to fear a goalkeeper for his offensive skills. His freekicks were a nightmare
back in the day i watched a lot of Brazilian football and seeing an attack minded and goal scoring keeper like i was refreshing my all time favorit goal keeper is peter chec but ceni is my second favorite wish i had got to see more of him and also got to saw him playing in europe
Good job. Just a small inaccuracy: he was also on the 2006 National Team roster and even played some minutes against Japan in the World Cup. You had footage of him replacing Dida in the second half of that game in your video (8:14).

If he indeed performed like that in Europe, everyone would probably say he is one of the greatest of all time. Thanks so much for doing this video! Rogério Ceni deserves a lot of recogniton from what he did

Passar bem.
There is no football tv station that would recognize players like you do. You educate people. Thank you
Ceni was as good as a goalkeeper can be.
@@rafieitan1019 I mean, São Paulo beat THAT Liverpool that beat Milan in THAT UCL final.
Tostão nunca jogou no São Paulo
As a coach, he's also a legend on Fortaleza, since he was one of the main contributors for the team to reach the first division of the brazilian championship and the level at wich it is now (playing continental championships like the South-American cup and the Libertadores).
You should mention Ceni's "last dance", in Sudamericana 2013. It's regarded by many as the best goalkeepers' performance ever.
World Champion twice: by the Brazilian National Team and by his club: São Paulo. A true legend.

People say Neuer changed how goalkeeper plays, but Ceni did it first being so good with his foot
Two times the best player of brazilian championship, not best goalkeeper, the best PLAYER, this guy have the most crazy accomplishments in the footbal history
Dude in 2007 after the game he stopped a penalty and scored twice. That triggered a winning streak of 16 games. Until this day He holds the record of 988 consecutive minutes of a brazilian club not conceding a single goal. The man was a beast!
I'm from Brazil, and I'm a fan of Santos, one of the biggest rivals of Sao Paulo - but we have to recognize Rogério Ceni was a beast in his prime. It was so nice to have a goalkeeper scoring goals like him - I think this probably will never happen again
Biggest rival only in your head. Santos is not even from the same city. Nobody cares enough about Santos to call them "their biggest rivals".
I'm a Santos supporter, and nothing made me tremble on my sofa like seeing my team concede a foul, and form a 4-man wall, just to see his all-black or all-red uniform stride through the sea of white jerseys from São Paulo.
I almost played for SPFC young teams, and Ceni was one of my idols back in time. Never thought I would see a video about him here, that's🔥🔥
Rogério is widely considered one of the best players, if not the single best player in Brasileirão history (not just keeper, player). This is a league that saw the likes of Pelé and Zico. The man was a beast and watching him live was amazing, every single set piece around the box was a very real scoring threat.
If you consider Taca Brasil and Robertao as the Brasileirao, there is no comparison betwen Pele and Rogerio. Pele is miles ahead.
@@ecksbest "One" of the best. Not THE best. Ceni is up there.

had the privilege of seeing him live in 2005 in Rio against fluminense. he didn't score, but watching him practice free kicks at half time was amazing

Along with Tele Santana, Ceni may be why most people in South America think Sao Paulo is the greatet Brazilian team.
Hope you will someday talk about Chilavert too, he lived crazy things during his career, as you said he scored a hat trick and against no other than his team rivals, and was awarded three times the IFFHS best goalkeeper award.
The only south american to win the award, only three players won it more times than him, buffon, casillas and Cech
Rogerio was greater
Rogério Ceni, figura mitológica do futebol brasileiro.
I have some friend in São Paulo and they told me Ceni is basically a living god there.
Supporters of other clubs in São Paulo mostly lack the respect he deserves as an athlete. I get that people don't like him or whatever but the guy is absolutely undeniably a fucking legend and should be treated as such.
I'm brazilian and must say that Ceni is undoubtedly a living legend here.
Wow what a legend. Arguably the best Brazilian GK of all time.
Thank you daily dose for this amazing content as always
Never the first choice when playing for Brazil during World Cups. Can't be the best.
He was always around the 3rd or 4th best Brazilian keeper, but still a legend
Rogerio Ceni also has the 2nd most cleansheets of any brazilian goalkeeper (417) only behind Fabio (currently at Fluminense) who has 424.⚽⚽⚽
However Ceni might have more as there is 20 matches without information
So we don't know if he played in those matches so the number of cleansheets could be higher
but at the moment Ceni is 2nd
Fabio needs seventeen more cleansheets to go past Casillas, Van der Sar & Clemence and become the keeper with 3rd most cleansheets in football history
Buffon has the most with 503 cleansheets
Thanks for the video. It deserves to reach the whole world. Rogério Ceni is a myth, a living legend.
Ceni is so underrated, it makes me happy to see people from other countries recognize his deeds and how great he was. VAMOS SÃO PAULO!
@@MultiJejje Im Palmeiras fan. I would never considerate it.

Everytime I see someone praise Neuer for his footwork I remember Rogério was already doing that 10+ years before him

Ceni, um dos maiores da história
This man deserves SO MUCH MORE RESPECT
A Brazilian legend, long live Rogério Ceni.
Always rose up to the occasion, his best matches were the most important ones. Legend.
Great video! I will never forget 2005-2010 seasons. That game against Cruzeiro still gives me the goosebumps every time I see it.
Really glad to see a video about this from the anglosphere! Ceni is an absolute brazilian LEGEND. Criminally underrated.

Wait people don't know about Rogerio Ceni? Might be showing my age here but he was so fun to watch highlights of as a kid, Also on every Football Manager I'd try and get him just cause of the crazy free kick stat.
He said:
"When I die, I want my ashes to be spread here at Morumbi" (Cicero Pompeu de Toledo Stadium, in Morumbi Neighborhood).
Sao Paulo my favorite team of Brasil.
