Perfect INCUBUS - MORNING VIEW TONES at an affordable price? | PRS SE Hollowbody II Piezo

- I got a great deal on a brand new PRS SE Hollowbody II Piezo last Christmas (2022). I have been obsessed with Morning View's tones for years now, as so many of us have, and I wondered if this much cheaper model can get in the ballpark of the guitar that Mike Einziger used on that beautiful record!
I use the word "affordable" in the title and I know these guitars can still be pricey but they really are a more budget version of the USA counterparts - new and second hand.
What do you guys think? Does this SE model get similar tones to the album - let me know your thoughts! 😊

I had a feeling you would acquire a PRS at some point. Love the modifications you made and for that price you definitely can’t go wrong. I miss the days of Mike using his PRS guitars. I saw Incubus 2 years ago and he was using a tele which he has been using for many years now. He still gets pretty close to his original tones even with a different axe. I think it’s all in the player almost more than the gear.
Had to be done at some point 😁😉. The tone he had from science to morning view was incredible and the different PRS’ are a big part of that. I do love the tones on crow and light grenades too for different reasons. Basically, Mike is a tone machine! The tele is kind of similar, had a slightly different quality to the sound but the PRS hollowbody pickups (that Mike had) are definitely geared towards a single coil sound, compared to what you’d expect a humbucker to sound like.
Congratulations on the PRS. It sounds amazing. The blend mod is genius. You can see from the smile on your face when you play it how much it means to you.... I had a very similar feeling when I bought my Warwick Streamer SSII
Thank you! The mod definitely helps 👍🏻. Would love to compare to the US version 😁.
😱 awesome basses!!
Congratulations on your new PRS! Sounds killer. Beautiful too!
Thank you - it’s definitely the prettiest guitar I’ve ever owned 😅. Thanks for watching! 😊👍🏻
You got one! So awesome man! You killed the tones! I guess we are going to need to have some updated covers with the PRS and the Mesa combo’ed! Hope you have a ball with it Nick!
Thanks so much Davis! I will absolutely have to recreate some songs with this combo 😁👍🏻. Thanks for watching 🤘🏻
Yes Nick! I’ve got an se custom 24-08 myself and I cannot stress enough how much I love it. It’s got coil splitters for both pickups and a floating bridge. You can’t go wrong with prs. I guess the tone journey never really ends haha! Loved the video! Have a great day!
Nice! Sounds like you’ve got a great guitar that can cover a lot of ground there 😊👍🏻. It’s my first ever PRS and I’m really impressed with the build quality of the SE - just those pickups that would be interesting to swap and see the difference…😅. Thanks for watching!
Omg, she's gorgeous! Congratulations for this beauty, I'm sure you'll have a blast with it!!!
Thank you! Still figuring her out but think we’ll be good friends 😁😉🤘🏻
love all your incubus work man. I wish u more subs. greeting frm the Philippines
Thanks so much and thank you for watching 😊👍🏻
wow! congrats man! really loving the sound but I must say Im digging the visual of yours more that mike's ahaha. looking forward to seeing this guitar more
Thank you 😊👍🏻. I’m looking forward to using it in more videos 😁🤘🏻
Great video Nick. When I owned my Core HBI, I ran two cables and had the piezo go to a piezo DI box. Doing it that way isolates each output and you wouldn’t have had the issues with the master volume for the mag and piezo outputs. But glad you were able to find a work around mod that lets you accomplish that of a 3-way blend mini toggle!
Thanks! Mine had the same outputs to split the signal - the problem I had was the lack of blend control so if I’m just using one cable to mix the mag and piezo, I couldn’t do any volume swells with the 2 on together 😁👍🏻
Really great guitar!
😊👍🏻
This is a killer breakdown. Love the archtop sound, do you think we'd get closer with an actual archtop even from epiphone or ibanez?
Thank you! Maybe…I think the combination of the archtop, low output pickups with the piezo pickup blended in going into the Mesa Tremoverb makes the sound 👍🏻
Nice 🎸 PRS
Thanks! 😁👍🏻
I've recently bought a virtually new PRS SE Hollowbody I (the all-mahogany version) at half price. I really like it but I also found the MAGnetic pickups to be overly 'hot' output. Even the Piezo output was too strong so I turned it down via the trim pot on the onboard PCB. I also lowered the MAG pickups away from the strings to counteract their strong output. I love your modification. I may try this one myself.
I’ve had to do the exact same with mine too, including the piezo! The mod really helps for what I need the guitar to do - good luck with the mod if you choose to go for it 😁👍🏻
Nice one Nick! Could you recommend a luthier for doing that mod? I’m guessing you had one UK based! Ta!
That’s right - I’m down in Kent and had a friend of mine do it. He’s been a luthier for years - Tom King of Tom’s Guitars in Brastead, Kent. He does also offer a collection/on site service so depending on where you are he may come to your place and pick it up or do it on site at your house if you are in the UK yourself of course 😅👍🏻
@@Fitzgerd Thanks mate. Yeah im in north east london so not too far from you and this is mod that makes this guitar much more legit!
The screamy, too hot pickups can be cured, to a great extent, by lowering them (a lot!). And I use classic, round wound pure nickel strings. That tames them somewhat as well.
That’s exactly what I ended up doing with my PRS neck pickup to tame it a bit more 😁👍🏻. Thanks for watching!
Funnily enough I pickup the same guitar when the price dropped, found exactly the same issue on the pickups, I’ve since swapped them for Alegree desert dew p90’s, sounds a lot more refined and grown up :-)
Nice!
A Mesa tremoverb and a PRS Hollowbody? Thats awesome! Congrats my friend! I saw this model and love it, now I know its a good choice because of you 🤟
About the pickups, I have a PRS Standard 22 and switch the pickups to Seymour Duncans (59 neck/ JB bridge). Killer tone! Check my 11am cover at Hilikus channel! I think Mike uses a Jazz model in Bridge position, but I cant find the link in seymour duncan website anymore. Thanks for sharing your review, you are a true Incubus fan. If you come to Brazil from vacation, you have to play with me at a Hilikus concert!🤟🤟🤟🤟
Thanks so much Pedro! Your 11am cover is great 😁👍🏻. It’s my pleasure to share this stuff and I hope it helps other incubus nerds out there 😊. That would be a ton of fun to play with you guys - I spent some time in Rio and São Paulo way back in 2009! Seems like forever ago now 😅. Thanks for watching my friend!
@@Fitzgerd hahaha be my guest when you come to São Paulo again!
11am cover and tutorial soon?!?
Soon…ish 😅👍🏻
Soonish sounds good to me, can’t wait! 🎉
@@racktastic 😁👍
Woooooo!!!!!! You finally got an PRS! The PRS Years! (Fungus Amongus - Morning View Era!) Congrats man!
Thanks so much! Looking forward to getting to know it better and find the best pickup to piezo ratio 😁👍🏻
its still china dude and feels like it
Wow. I suddenly feel a whole lot better about the Adam Jones mods I did on my chibson. That sounds...not fun but nailing the tone on Echo would be priceless, gotta admit
Sometimes mods just need to be done 😁. To be honest, the stock guitar could have got really close to the tone for Echo - the mod I’ve had done is to help with volume swells 😊👍🏻
@@FitzgerdWhat did you do for swells? I put in a dimarzio to make it smooth but wondering if there's more I could do
@@Petesplayinagain sorry, I meant the mod to the piezo volume to make it a blend pot means I can do volume swells as I now have a master volume for the mag and piezo together 👍🏻. With the stock guitar, you can’t have the piezo active and do volume swells - it’s swells with the mags or the piezo not the 2 blended together.
Did the tech who performed the mods give you a schematic or diagram of what pots they used, or how it was wired? If so, would you be willing to post that info on your Patreon?
I'd be curious to know the specs on the pickups, as I've never had my hands on one of these. I've messed around with scatter-winding low (vintage) output HB pickups. Scatter-winding seems to my ears to tame the muddy low and low-mid frequencies without losing warmth.
Cheers!
I don’t have a schematic/diagram I’m afraid (let me ask him if he can remember 😁). I know for the volume pot he used a Fender CTS dual 500k/250k split shaft pot. Not sure what the blend pot was - I imagine it was a similar kind of thing. I think the blend for the piezo should be a 250k but mine is a 500k, but it seems to work absolutely fine to my ears 🤷🏻♂️
Pick up wise I’d love to see what the archtops are like. And I think you’re absolutely right about the eq there with the scatter wind. I’d like to have a go at building one and adding it to my PRS to see if I can get closer to Mike’s tone 😁
I’m just saying when they toured this albumin 2019 he played the whole night on a butterscotch telecaster.
Mike has settled on teles after trying lots of other guitars over the years because of his carpal tunnel surgery. That classic morning view tone came from PRS Archtops and hollowbodies back in 2001 when they recorded the album 😊👍🏻
@@Fitzgerd yeah it was sad to hear about his hands. Glad I listened to him and stayed on lower gauge guitar strings.
And yeah I have nearly bought a PRS se piezo like 100 times now. Some day I will pull the trigger lol
Definitely - heavy strings and the barre chords shapes he used to play in drop D are a recipe for disaster when you’re playing night after night 🫣. 😁 really great guitar without spending crazy money!
I realized you arent comparing this to the larger Archtop, but as someone who ones one of those... the deeper body makes a pretty big difference. I have played several other hollowbodies but the Archtop is a bit of a different beast.
Archtop + Mesa Recto = Chef's Kiss...
Other important note is I believe the boss SD-1 was used for a lot of things which would boost highs and shelve some low end which might help you get a bit closer that classic Morning View tones...
I bet! I would love to be able to play one to compare - they seem to be even more rare and expensive than the hollowbody IIs 😅
I’m finding mic position, or in my case which IR I’m using has a big impact on the sound. For science/make yourself, I use a TS-9 and that shelves those lows and boosts the high mids into the right territory 😁👍🏻
@@Fitzgerd Much more difficult to find these days. I got "lucky" and found one with some finish issues locally here. If you are ever in the SF Bay area stop on by and you can play mine any time.
Nice! That’s one hell of a guitar you’ve got there! Ah thanks man, appreciate that 😊👍🏻
You may have said it but what pickups did Mike E use in his PRS? How does someone get to the electronics if there is no back cavity? Sorry I've never owned a PRS.
As far as I can tell he used “Archtop” pickups - that is what was in those late 90s/early 2000s hollowbodies. For the electronics, you can remove the whole panel on the side of the guitar, where the jack sockets are to get to the electronics. It’s pretty fiddly 😅👍🏻
Where did you get the mod done?
Tom’s Guitars in Brasted, Kent, UK 👍🏻
Can this be used for a little more heavier rock/metal sub genres- think late 90ss early 2000s nu metal post grunge like incubus' make yourself
@@SunnyBeeRandomTuber as stock, probably not. The pickups aren’t high enough output in my opinion. If you changed the bridge to be something hotter like a Seymour Duncan JB, it could then tackle a load of tones. Mike actually did this on his hollowbodies and archtops during morning view. He had a Seymour Duncan Jazz in the neck and JB in the bridge. The only thing to be wary of would be the guitar feeding back if you use real amps that are turned up loud.
Individual piezos in the bridge. Of course, why not?
😂 for a good few thousands of £/$ why not indeed!! Amazed the thing doesn’t play itself for the price 🤣
Beautiful guitar. Unless you are a professional musician no reason to spend many thousands. You are slowly turning into an early 2000s nu metal guy. Now you need spiky hair and baggy jeans.
Absolutely! I’m a big believer in getting a reasonably priced guitar but 3000 is way to much for me! Hahaha I was that kid in the 2000s 🫣 just without the equipment I have now 🤣
@@Fitzgerd haha. Nothing wrong with being a nu-metal guy. Way better than being in any other group IMO.
😁😉
Really great guitar!
Thank you!
