    I'm a funk head to the tenth power. There's two musicians I think about every day. Larry Blackmon and Prince. Being a bass player I've taken a little bit from both of these geniuses in my playing style. I must say that's turned out well. Cameo at their essence with Larry Blackmon on drums. Classic.

      @@rex-t1master278 Bull S***! I'm White, I knew every damn song Larry Blackmon and Cameo did. Oh, By The Way, my radio career was in Black/R&B Radio. Many White DJs were in Black Radio, like at WLAC in Nashville, TN. I hated working at a Album Oriented Rock (AOR) Station. I tried it in Nashville at 103 WKDF. I didn't stay there 4 months. It was boring playing AC/DC and Guns-n-Roses. This was the music I grew up to. Before I bought my own station, I had major success working in R&B/Black Radio. I'm retired now, I miss those days.

      In 1990 at the radio station I was working at, I was very fortunate and thrilled to interview Larry Blackmon and Cameo. My favorite songs were from when I first heard them as a teen, Funk Funk and Post Mortem. Larry was shocked that I knew so much about them. I told them about my teen days in high school. I went to a predominantly white high school where Cameo's music wasn't accepted, as a matter of fact, I got into a heated argument with a white cheerleader and her racist boyfriend about how I thought how great Larry Blackmon and Cameo was. I was the "white kid" that ended up working on the air as a Announcer/DJ at the R&B/Urban radio station where I met and interviewed my teen idols, Larry Blackmon and Cameo. I'm now getting close to 60 years old, it was the highlight of my life, they can keep Taylor Swift and her "very awful music"! Back in high school days, I guess Larry Blackmon was my high school hero. BTW: Taylor Swift wasn't born until December, 1989!😆

      Man, your experience is noteworthy. Yes, Cameo was a stellar group when I was young man. My fav albums of theirs was 'Cameosis'-1980, 'Feel Me' - 1981 and 'Knights of the Sound Table' - 1983. But I do cherish "Funk, Funk" (Rigor Mortis), This vid's cut "I Just Wanna Be" & "Sparkle" (both from the 1979 album, Secret Omen. A good portion of their hits post 1984 I regard seriously, cause they were seriously funky! But the ones I quoted were the very best to me with the last in regards, being high school jam. Very good choice, boss man! Screw racism and dump on it every chance you get!! PEACE *💎🎶🎸🎹*

  • @woodie62
    @woodie62 4 года назад +3

    The dude that was the high tenor in the group, his name was Wayne Cooper. Not the same guy that was reaching those notes @ 5:20. I heard the story that Cooper had an addiction problem so he wound up leaving the group in the early eighties. It was also said that as a result he caught AIDS and died sometime after. I don't know if it's true but if so, they lost a helluva lead singer. They did pretty good for themselves afterward, but still. Wished he could have remained.

    • @rastaman1017
      @rastaman1017 2 года назад +1

      Wayne Cooper was their best falsetto, he left the group to go solo but passed before it was released, this was when the group was the funkiest but folks gotta remember it's hard to feed 10+ members and Larry wasn't paying g the guys what they should of been paid this is why they have a lawsuit against Larry

    • @woodie62
      @woodie62 2 года назад +1

      @@rastaman1017 I thought your reasoning he left the group was more palatable than that I'd heard. But it was still unfortunate just the same. Another repeating misfortune was concerning why the group split. Not so much about having to feed a slew of members, but the fact that they didn't get properly compensated. And if they had then 'feeding' would have been solely on each member. However, it wasn't new in Cameo's case and as I said before, it was a repetitive theme in music history. James Brown did the same thing with his guys. He repeatedly changed musicians for upgrading his sound as well as to remain relevant, understandably so. But I looked on-line and saw his last album count several years before his death was 60 albums!!! Can't understand for the life of me how a man who had multiple resources could "pinch" on payment to the people who help make his name what it was. Don't get me wrong, he was the funkmaster, for real. I idolized him as a youth. But it still doesn't make sense. Another example was Barry Gordy. That story's been told from many angles. Dick Griffey with SOLAR Records (Shalamar) Check out their "UNSUNG" docu on RUclips. It's really incredible how black execs in the music industry and otherwise, preach so much about pro-blackness and oppression of the same, yet pinch on wealth concerning the very black people in their employ. Sorry to be so long. But I'll end by saying this: the state of wealth of black people will never change if it's dependent upon politicians or entertainers. Has to be from the bottom up.

      Don't forget the Ohio bands: Ohio Players, Zapp, Heatwave, Lakeside... Back then there were Battle of the Band Concerts all the time, and we took that shit seriously. You had to be badass musicians that could sing and dance, and you had to have custom uniforms. But after our generation, public schools defunded band and music education programs. So young folks with the calling to be entertainers either gravitated to Hip Hop, or learned to play instruments in church bands.

    I think Wayne Cooper left the band by this performance but sang co lead on this song. What a shame he didn't perform on this video.
