The part of you becoming friends with a Syrian refugee is what I like best in this video. A lot more Americans should get a passport and come over here, even just a week or two. The best antidote against all the fear mongering nonsense that is being told in some American media about Europe is personal encounter.

You could go on top of the church, go to great museum like the chocolate, the olympic, the Romano-Germanic etc. You didn't even go to the Rhine river which is really big and beautiful. There are also some great bridges like the Hohenzollernbrücke and you didn't even see the other side of the Rhine river...

regarding that thing with the weather: It's not like we have that few sunny days, but you never know when it will change. You seem to like castles and castle ruins very much so if you want more of that you should visit the Palatinate Forest in southwestern Germany. It's pretty much full of castle ruins (some are intact). You could for example visit Nothweiler, a village just a few hundred metres from the French border, go hiking uphill from there and see four beautiful castles/ruins in one tour, some on German soil, some on French soil. The Vosges Mountains across the border in France are also packed with castles and super beautiful. Since you find German houses so interesting, you'll love the French villages in this region (called Alsace). Just driving around gawking at the landscape, the houses and gardens and occasionally buying great food in a restaurant or supermarket is what we do every now and then.

Random facts about Cologne Cathedral: it was hit about 70 times by bombs during WW II and parts of the cathedral collapsed. An improvised fix made out of bricks saved the norther tower from collapsing for about 60 years until they partically removed and exchanged it with the same sandstone the rest of the cathedral is made of in 2004/2005.
The area surrounding the catheral was bombed out and all the buildings were collapsed, except the catheral that, even though heavily damaged, was still standing. They took the opportunity and cleared out the space towards the river Rhine, planted trees there and build the main train station right next to the cathedral. Admittedly, having the main trian station where it is, is extreamly convenient, but is also very damaging to the cathedral, so in retrospect it was a very stupid idea.

Cologne Cathedral has a long history. The construction started in 1200 and ended in 1800. The dom survived both wars. This is Cologne's biggest pride. Is the heart of Cologne. A symbol of my home. The bell calls st. petersglocke or "Dicke Pitter" .
The bells ring only on special occasions. 01 January, 06 January, Easter, Ascension (a holiday), Whitsun (A holiday), Corpus Christi (a holiday), 28 June, 31 October and 01 November (A holiday of all saints), 08 December, 24 December and 25 December

So you know: "Kölner Haie" is the ice hockey team of cologne. The season is over now but in case you want to go back and see a game, come back in october :)
And you can walk to the top of one of the towers of the Dom. You pay (if I'm right) 1€ and it's over 250 steps to the top. But you have an awesome view over the city :)

Some facts about the Dom (cathedral): it took almost 800 years to be completed, it has the shrine with the bones of the three wise man inside, it was such a huge magnet during the middle ages, that cologne was declared one of the three holy cities of katholic christianity (besides jerusalem and rome) and people had to do little work, as all the pilgrims brought alot of money, (because of all that money the arch bistum of cologne is still the richest in the world, without its contribution, the pope wouldn't even be able to maintain the peters-cathedral in the vatikan). it was hit by a bomb in ww2, yet remained the only structure standing in the city center of cologne and after completion it was the tallest building in the world for two weeks or so, untill the empire state building was completed and took that title away

  • @erdgas9307
    @erdgas9307 6 лет назад

    towns obligatory to visit:
    Hamburg (Docklands, Miniaturwunderland, Elbphilharmonie)
Berlin (too much to list. take at least a whole weekend for it. Maybe Reichstag, Brandenburger Tor, Gedächtniskirche and Europacenter next to it with "Uhr der fließenden Zeit", Fernsehturm, Checkpoint Charlie, East Side Gallery)
(For some adventure, choose Berlin oder Hamburg at evening before 1. may)
Dresden (Semperoper, Frauenkirche, historical town center)
Munich (have fun with the nudists at english garden)
    Additional suggestions
Hannover (Herrenhausen gardens; Maschsee; fireworks contest, Hannover fair, world's biggest industrial exhibition. Running until this friday, so you would have to hurry. Prefer to arrive at western entry via Laatzen/Hannover-Messe trainstation and enjoy the skywalk instead of using the tram to the northern entry; Steinhuder Meer lake half an hour west of Hannover)
Schwerin, maybe combined with baltic sea
    Spreewald near Berlin
    Lübeck
    Loreley

Towards the end Conner increasingly looks like he tried a few Kölschs (local beer) :D Also Cologne is quite known in Germany to be a place where connecting with strangers is very easy. They kind of celebrate that there.

You should definitely go to a northern city in Germany like Bremen, Hamburg, Kiel or Rostock. In general you should also go east. You are just visiting western cities like Cologne. The east is still kinda different. Just check it out.

Since a while I am thinking about starting to play football, too. I am 17 years old and love watching the NFL beside some College Football. I’m small and have not been doing that much sports in the past and so on I didn’t have the guts yet to just visit a practice of the team near my home village. I hope I’ll somehow start somewhen.

I like football too. I used to not care about it, but I watched game highlights and your videos and I don't know all the rules,
but I got a decent understanding about what the game is all about. I'd be down to watching a game with my pals.
If I ever get to be in America for a longer time, I'll get more into it ^^
