I get misty every time I hear this song. I was only 9 or 10 when I first saw Godspell but I had a calling years before this. I believe that watching Godspell sealed it. It’s been up hill ever since. I had my son watch this many years ago. I believe, I can’t remember exactly, but if I remember correctly, he cried. He went to live with the Savior 41/2 years ago. He was 25 and had high functioning autism. ❤️😢❤️

In the middle of my water bed shaking and screeching across our basement floor and not being able to yell or even speak I said Jesus' Christ please help me in my head. I sat straight up in bed turned on my light and never again did I deny Him. This is a condensed version of the story. It in total involved a devil worshiper, a Christian Ministers wife, another friend who worked with me and a patient in the facility where we worked.

I played keyboards for 3 different productions of Godspell. My parents loved to come see the shows I was involved in, but because I did mot think they would understand or appreciate Godspell’s quirky vibe I did not offer until they asked what I was currently involved in, and expressed interest in seeing it. After a Saturday evening performance I headed out to the lobby not knowing what to expect. My father could hardly speak he was so moved, and had clearly been weeping. I should have trusted that true to form, Godspell always works it’s. God-inspired magic.

I mistakenly thought the words were "I shall call the pebble death... and we talk together about walking until I take Him from shoe, singing meet your new Lord. Then Ill take His hand, finally glad that you are here' etc. Strangely it still works though I sing it correctly these days and have a better understanding of 'daring' oneself to walk that path. There are so many beautiful songs in this film-- I really like how they seem to alternate happy and sad songs. I'm a 50 year old atheist and I absolutely adore this film. David Haskell is priceless-- and I'm absolutely head over heels in love with Gilmer McCormick's character in this-- her hippy Raggedy Ann outfit and tiger finger puppet just get me. At the end, when she hugs Victor with that hand puppet, I just lose it. It will be on my DVR till the day I die.

For me, though, what makes the moment especially bittersweet is how he reacts even though, as Matthew's gospel has it (which Godspell is based on), most of those closest to him are about to fall asleep on him in his moment of need and run away in fear. Jesus loves them anyway.

No, she had just performed the song over a hundre times. Katie and Jeff were both from the OBC (original broadway cast).
And just fyi. Godspell was written by a Jew. Stephen Schwartz is a Jew, like me. And I don't think he gives a second thought to Jesus because Jesus doesn't really come up in conversation among Jews.

Today, for the gazillionth time, I was running across a city street, and the slightest bit of gravel got caught in my shoe, .. and I immediately started up with “I’ll put a pebble in my shoe, and watch me walk ...” etc ... until I got safely across and leaned against a traffic sign to balance while I dislodge the pebble. But tonight, I suddenly stopped facebooking or whatever to wonder, WHAT Is that little ditty I invariably lean in to when that happens?” (And have, for nearly 50 years of summer sandals) ... “I shall call the pebble “Dare!”
Well, so sweet now, to have the entire scene ... and, um all of Salvation ... reminded me. Thank you.

Not many people know this but, this was the first single issued from the original red cover Gospel album. It got limited air play and was a lower chart single. I use to sing this song to my children and I also sang it at a Good Friday church service.
