I think the narration makes it a masterpiece. It’s a story being told but you are simultaneously seeing it. It makes it different and people who love the artistry of film can appreciate it.

Elsa's narration is exactly what makes it a mastrpiece in storytelling. Jeez

I liked the voiceover. It adds a level of history, as tho' we're reading her diary.

Claire was one of many who showed the natural brutality of this era. I think that was her purpose.

The narration makes it imo, her voice is beautiful and the words are poetic

I think what the aunt brought to the story was a few things. She was there to show the vast difference between the two sisters despite their similar upbringing. You're meant to understand how important family is to them, that they took in their relative who lost their husband and had no other options. Most importantly, I think it was meant to show you how desperate the times were, how quickly they could turn on anyone, and of course, that semi-main characters are vulnerable.

I don't think the "purple prose" is overwriting. It's written in an 1880s voice, when educated people wrote and talked that way. You seem to want them to sound like boomers.
BTW, look at a map. Tennessee isn't far north of Fort Worth at all.

I'm sorry but I disagree. Her narration is soooo overwrought and goes so far out of the way in it metaphors and similies that the point nearly gets lost for the sake of trying to "create art".

It's also written from Elsa's pov who's a 17 recently 18 year old girl. i found it perfect. Elsa's commentary is there to remind us of the beauty in the middle of all the horror.

LOVE watching you react on this series. One note hun. James is very deliberate, he wouldn't have given his daughter a pistol unless he KNEW she could use it. 😊 looking forward to the rest of your journey.

John Duttons didn't have a lot of men moving the heard in Yellowstone, cows are easy to round up and move where you don't need that many to do

During the days of the of the castle drives they used to move about a thousand heard of cattle with only 20 or 30 cowboys

I'm not saying it's right or wrong but ending yourself in any fashion other than sacrifice to save someone else is weakness. And since there is no guarantee of anything after death leaving this life is insane.
I dont think that every character has to have a literary device to them. I think they are what they are and later we stamp them with whatever makes us feel right. Clair is a woman who was kept and protect by her husband. Once he was gone, she realized she had no one or way to pay for anything and latched on to her brother, James. She has been trying to play boss to everyone in the family. That is what people who complain a lot are doing.
I think James is taking his family far away from his past. The farther the better.
I love the narration by Elsa. I dont care how overdone the prose. They did a comparison of letters written by a Union soldier and a modern soldier. The Union soldier had a sort of poetry to it while the modern letter was full of grammatical errors. Just saying there is a warm fuzzy feeling when you hear English spoken properly.

I know this reaction is old but it actually makes 100% sense why the sister is there with them. She said her husband died. And if you have forgotten the times back then well it’s still a man’s world now but back then we all know it was even more so. How do think she was gonna survive her and her daughter without a husband. When women didn’t have voices back then. A man or men would’ve definitely taken advantage of them. So the smart choice was to go with her sister who did still have a husband to protect them. Until maybe hopefully she can find a new husband. So yeah….

Hi Anna! Im the one that warned you about the purple prose! Nice to know someone with actual literary experience agreed with me. LOL! I think I'm really going to enjoy your reaction on this....but thats not unusual - I usually do!

I'm not sure what Claire brought to the table. I know she had a serious lack of imagination. She couldn't see a productive life, outside of her own children. Imo

@@RobsHandMonkey Numerous reasons: I've been trained (degree in film studies) to watch media whether I find it completely enjoyable or not, the parts without narration I did like, I love historical media, I wanted to watch the prequel shows before I started Yellowstone...that's all I can think of right now.
