I would watch Lisette Oropesa plaster a wall. She is a dream-so beautiful...that voice, technique, her presence. Love everything she does.

I had never seen this opera until a few years ago and this was the production. I loved the whole thing and the depression era settings were very evocative(I was born in the 1930’s in humble circumstances) The banquet scenes, the campy witch, the children’s chorus...and the absolutely brilliant singing bring such pleasure ..and it’s almost like being at the Met. Growing up my mom had one or two classical records including my first opera Carmen with Gladys Swarthout . I hope I can find this version of H &G somewhere in its entirety (RUclips?) I play it at Xmas when I can find it.and hopefully a grand child or great grandchild will Join me in the magic.

I do not find this production enthralling. Of the recent performance I witnessed, I have nothing but praise for the singers, the orchestra, and the conductor. THEIR contributions were beyond reproach. On the other hand, the grayish-brownish squalor of the sets and ambiguous timeframe seemed to suggest some incongruous social commentary wholly inconsistent with the context of the folk tale upon which this opera is based. And I really think something is lost in presenting the opera in English. I recall that, back in the 1980s, the Met had a beautiful, evocative production of Hänsel und Gretel in German. I sincerely hope that the Met will someday revert to something similar.

I agree--but find it much less than 'enthralling'--its basically a misfire of a production--one of the worst in MET history--badly conceived/directed on every level. but singing is great--one has to close one's eyes and then its ok.

hope they go back to really honoring the fairy tale with fantasy instead of drab depression era and fallen soufflé of a witches house (directors run amok with opera --yet one more sorry example). by the way Judith blegan and Frederica von stade were in that memorable production.

the met had a lovely production of Hansel and gretel with Judith blegen as gretel and Frederica von stade as hansel. Which is avaible on dvd it is for me the best hansel and gretel production ever made

Squalid sets? The original is not some ever-so-nice story. H&G live in poverty. Mother is so depressed by this that she has no time for affection. The breaking of the milk jug is the final straw for her. She needed that for their dinner, she doesn't have the money to buy anything else. These folk tales are disturbing, very often quite frightening - designed to warn children of the horrible effects of "bad behaviour". Read the text of the first half hour. Social commentary along those lines are not at all "inconsistent" with the originals. Yes, there's a happy ending, but there's a lot of unhappiness and danger along the way.

As a director it pains me to see productions where the director doesn’t give a crap about the text
