As someone who lives in Boston, the best part about this is that having gone down that slide myself I can tell you it is actively difficult for a person larger than a child to get up to the entrance to the slide so he had to seriously put effort into getting up there.

Massachusetts slides are genuinely all kind of like this. We had a metal slide here in Central Mass and everyone knew that one would send you compared to the plastic one which would leave you electrified.
A lot of the time, officers are trained to practically live with the full gear on, and it then doesn't become an issue after having to wear it every single day.

Couple of things: There's friction on the surface. Obviously the more surface area you have, the more friction *possibly*, but more importantly is that the more mass you have (often much much larger multiplier than your surface area) the less of the ratio of friction to your momentum. Because of this, the more massive slider is going down closer to freefall, but also as the slide curves, depending on the curve, it can actually accelerate you *faster* than freefall. Like a ski jump. If the curve is progressive than the acceleration can be massive. Not a huge deal for a little kid who is lighter and slowed down more by friction, but for a man it's a cannon.
Reminds me of the winter time in elementary school, I discovered that if you put some snow on the slide and then grabbed a chunk of ice and went down the slide while sitting on it, the result would be that of attaching a rocket engine to a skate board. Truly some good times
Little did we know, he’s actually a time traveler that was sent here to warn us about something huge. Unfortunately his colleague flubbed the numbers and he was sent back in the middle of the slide going 100mph.
I honestly think this cop deserves some respect for going so fast. It's pretty impressive. I'm sure Elon Musk will hire this guy to try and build a super slide across the country.
The funniest part about this comment thread is that it actually perfectly describes of how Elon functions without even being hyperbolic, my example being the cave rescue situation; Elon desperate for attention makes a sub, the sub is completely unusable for the operation, he blames the main head of operation and makes up a theory how he's somehow a pedo.
It has to do with mass. My dad went on a slide made for 8 year olds when I was a kid and he flew into the air and cracked his skull open. Turns out, heavy adults go down slides faster with more inertia than children. My dad got some stitches but survived, btw. The way I described it made it sound like he died but he's still alive.
That doesn’t make much sense. Gravity accelerates all things equally. Heavier adults do not go down slides faster, that’s like saying bigger bowling balls fall faster which Galileo proved wrong off the leaning tower of Pisa. He may have more inertia due to having higher mass but he has proportionally more bone density and strength so it makes no sense that your dad would crack his skull open if he rode down a slide the same way a kid did it. They should come out at the same speed and there’s no reason he would go flying and you wouldn’t.
Its those metal slides, man. Those get so frictionless and worn down smooth, we had some real nasty ones that every kid avoided back in the day. Everyone learned the hard way why that part of the play area was abandoned. It may as well of been a frozen over floor of a moving truck.
@@jasonpeng5798Its not so much about gravity but about inertia. Slides don't just make you go down. There are sections meant to slow you down and speed you up. If you are too large they don't work. Which is also why overweight adults or underweight children may find themselves flung off waterslides. Or an example in this video, the long flat lip at the bottom of the slide that is meant to stop children doesn't do anything.
I love how Charlie cant contain himself laughing. Also there is a video of an adult woman going down that same slide and it was so chill... this is a mystery indeed.
This happened to my friend at six flags on a water slide 😂😂😂 it was identical, he’s just too heavy for the slide since it was designed for 12 year olds. At six flags my friend was about 300 lbs so it’s just something that happens when people are too heavy for the ride.
I think he gained so much speed due to the fact he had equipment on him, like his radio, handcuffs, taser, etc. I think they acted as spacers to minimize contact and friction, allowing those incredible speeds.
I think its just gravity. The slide is desinged for children between 20-50kg. The officer is a chunky adult with 80-100kg. Thy why he shot out lile a fucking rocket :D
The slide had an adult detector on it that activated a mariokart style speed booster if an adult decided to break the rules and ride the slide, to punish them
As a Bostonian, I can say two things: 1. Those slides are absolutely insane and I’ve seen people go down them like 30 mph if they have the right clothes/velocity 2. Good amount of the BPD just spend good amounts of their time doing effectively nothing (don’t act like y’all don’t with your jobs/school)
for some reason, when I read "BPD" I automatically assumed you were saying borderline personality disorder, and I was so confused. it took me a second to realize you meant Boston Police Department
You can see that the slide has one section where it is wider, like a car exhaust pipe. That is probably filled with like detection sensors to determine if the slider is within the allowed age limit. If not, the slide activates the eject button and basically hits the slider with the green arrow super mario cart boost, just shooting them out like a human potato canon.
After carefully analyzing the video I've come to the conclusion that somewhere along the slide the physics engine glitched, the cops user lost connection with the server and his body went full ragdoll mode.
The cop clearly hit a warp gate but miraculously made it back. His heart was stopped but on first impact once exiting the slide it resuscitated him bringing life back into his body.
What happened is the mesh polymer in his hi-vis-vest reduced the friction. Think of the mesh as little air pockets, so there's less overall contact with the slide. That combined with his adult body weight to accelerate him much faster than a child would. Edit: So many 'professional physicists' in this comments section quoting false facts. First off, free fall states that all things being equal, objects at different mass will fall under gravity at the same rate. This is true. However, all things, but mass have to be equal. A 100lb sphere will fall at the same rate as a 1lb sphere, because everything else is equal. However a 100lbs cube will not fall at the same rate as a 1lb sphere because all things are not equal. Surface area effects drag, which is why I didn't say mass, I said adult body and weight. What I really should have said was size, because that is based on shape and surface area. A grown man skydiving can tuck in his arms and legs to accelerate to the ground faster than another man who has his limbs spread out. Friction is the limiting factor in all cases of gravity based acceleration. Since air is not the only form of friction in this case, surface area and weight distribution make a difference in acceleration.
@@christiancavelltaylor442it can make a difference not it terms of speed gain but on the contrary in terms of speed loss. Being heavier means more energy which entails that you need more friction to slow down that you would have required if you are not as heavy, which can definitely mean more speed at the end of the tunnel. Although I have no idea how significant that is in the context of a slide.
@@christiancavelltaylor442- thats only correct in a vacuum I believe. But still, less friction and more potential energy being transferred into kinetic energy.
Anyone else get a ptsd flashback to the old school playground slides that threw you around then spat you onto a pile of rocks after giving you a third degree burn?
Here’s my little analysis: in view of the full slide there is a steep incline at the top, looking closely enough you will see that the turn to go towards the exit of the slide is not visible, implying that it’s a sharp turn which in a dark metal slide is completely invisible. The officer must have hit the side of the slide when he turned and tumbled gaining more momentum the further down he went, resulting in what ever loony tunes bullshit he experienced.
I was in Boston a few months ago and rode this slide! It was truly an incredible experience, the slide was remarkable both in its lack of friction and velocity you’re able to achieve
For the love of all that's good!!...The man was probably trying to connect with his community and got wreck...What is the issue people!....Call it Karma what ever, poor guy was no doubt put up to it by his department... Don't hear shit from his colleges unless the media demands an answer from some silly BS like that!!...What is the agenda??
Judging by how tall and the general shape of the structure I'm going to say I think he just went too fast and it tossed him around. And I think the reason that happened was because of his outfit. He had that bright vest, and the material those are made out of basically have no friction on smooth surfaces. My guess is that he laid all the way down and had much less traction than is expected. Like when you go down those slides at the county fair on burlap.
That, plus the fact he's a big grown adult with a slightly corpulent build. Minimal friction + increased weight/mass + gravity = way more acceleration than the tiny kids the slide was built for.
God those burlap sack slides are terrifying ever since I went down one and ended up with a concussion cause some dipshit stepped infront of the end of it.
I'm from the Boston area and tried out that slide one late night. The momentum you gain and the velocity that you exit the slide with is insane! I fell flat on my ass, laughing the whole time 😆
These slides are probably created with kids in mind, not adults, so the physics change when the mass going down is 5-10x. Also could have been wearing clothing that was very low friction, hitting that corner can definitely cause someone to flip upside down like that. I've had something similar happen on a waterslide, started out normal, hit the first curve and flipped over upside down and I almost drowned due to sliding down the fucker on my stomach, face down, legs first, all the water funneling up my nasal passages.
kids could have also waxed it. we used to wax metal slides as kids with a candle or just scribbling on it with a crayon as you go down. it makes the slide extremely slippery no matter what you're wearing, if anything it makes it too slippery if you keep doing it and even the smallest of slides will have you shooting off the end like this at high speed
Charles literally covered child predators and horrific murderers 2 weeks ago, and has now made a 8 minute video from a 6 second clip of a guy going down a slide. Mr. White will never cease to amaze me
i remember hearing about plastic metal friction being super low, those bikes that can go like 60mph use plastic metal chains for lower friction. maybe the plastic vest gave the officer a very low friction situation and accelerated him like a railgun shot out the end of the slide
Here in scotland it feels kind of normal for police officers to be able to have a little laugh like this on the job sometimes lol, you need more like this dude in america 😅
Most are like this. It's just the media trying to portray the officer as evil for going down a damn slide... They'll find any reason to demonize police.
Bruh, I've driven by this slide hundreds of times. It's in Boston by Government Center. I've always thought there's no shot this is a kid's slide but have always wanted to try it
The video was a masterpiece though. It had the anticipation, the tension-building with the noises and the absolute comedic shock of seeing a man being pelted around with ragdoll physics.
I love that when clicking on a video of Charlie you never know if it's something actually serious or something silly as hell "huge slide disaster" lmao
Once went down a water slide at Hawaiian Falls back in ~2005 in one of those double innertubes with my dad. I'm riding in the front when halfway down the slide, we hit a bump and I go flying up, hit the roof of the slide, land behind my dad, and he's somehow in the front seat now, and I'm holding onto the back for dear life as we go mach 10 out the end and I slide across the surface of the pool setting the record for amount of rocks skipped. It was a blast. (And incredibly dangerous)
Atleast you didnt get decapitated like in that infamous waterpark from the 90's don't know what it was called but atleast 6 people died before the park shut dowm
My theory: he discovered a method for going down really fast as a child. (Maybe a run and jump situation), and now he uses it as some sort of party trick as an adult anytime he's within the vicinity of a slide because he thinks it makes him cool and quirky or something. This would also explain why he was going down the slide in the first place. Also, this was probably his first time on this slide and perhaps the last turn was a bit sharper than he had calculated for and that's why he came out all discombobulated.
Guys, the reflective vest is way too slick on polished metal. Also with his utility belt on, all of the stuff sticking out minimized his area of contact with the slide so he had very little drag. Have you ever used just your shoulder blades and heels on a water slide instead of your whole body? You will go Way faster.

Idk why I never thought of that, but yeah the weight of a fully grown man, with all his gear, makes sense
Thanks
Reminds me of the winter time in elementary school, I discovered that if you put some snow on the slide and then grabbed a chunk of ice and went down the slide while sitting on it, the result would be that of attaching a rocket engine to a skate board. Truly some good times

Can you imagine that slide on a 102° day
It has to do with mass. My dad went on a slide made for 8 year olds when I was a kid and he flew into the air and cracked his skull open. Turns out, heavy adults go down slides faster with more inertia than children.
My dad got some stitches but survived, btw. The way I described it made it sound like he died but he's still alive.
finally! this fellow gets it
That doesn’t make much sense.
@@jasonpeng5798 you a moron? If you drop a feather off a building does it fall the same as a brick? No it doesn’t

Not to mention his plate carrier! He was basically a sled going downhill on ice, there was no stoppin.

We need a video of Charlie and Matt testing out different slides now

We just need Charlie to film a video at the slide in question and make it a 10 min in depth review with experts along side him.

I needed this. Thank you
The slide had an adult detector on it that activated a mariokart style speed booster if an adult decided to break the rules and ride the slide, to punish them
As a Bostonian, I can say two things:
1. Those slides are absolutely insane and I’ve seen people go down them like 30 mph if they have the right clothes/velocity
2. Good amount of the BPD just spend good amounts of their time doing effectively nothing (don’t act like y’all don’t with your jobs/school)
That slide looks like it would get hot asf during summer
@pandorin2348 they do
for some reason, when I read "BPD" I automatically assumed you were saying borderline personality disorder, and I was so confused. it took me a second to realize you meant Boston Police Department
@@juicybuttercup5393LOL same
Mass and Cass is So fucking bad. Like Skid Row bad.
You can see that the slide has one section where it is wider, like a car exhaust pipe. That is probably filled with like detection sensors to determine if the slider is within the allowed age limit. If not, the slide activates the eject button and basically hits the slider with the green arrow super mario cart boost, just shooting them out like a human potato canon.
bro there gatta be a secret mario cart booster somewhere in there fr
The fact that this comment has only 6 likes (Me being like #6) is unfair!
Hmmm, looks like my last comment did not age well, lol. now it has 55 likes as I'm typing this.
That just makes it even more fun for older people
After carefully analyzing the video I've come to the conclusion that somewhere along the slide the physics engine glitched, the cops user lost connection with the server and his body went full ragdoll mode.
This is what happens when you dont pay attention in physics and end up with negative friction on the test
The cop clearly hit a warp gate but miraculously made it back. His heart was stopped but on first impact once exiting the slide it resuscitated him bringing life back into his body.
Thanks. I thought it was a time jump portal!! But you are correct sir
Since air is not the only form of friction in this case, surface area and weight distribution make a difference in acceleration.
my farts are better than Charlie's farts.
Acceleration due to gravity is unaffected by the mass of an object. Him being a grown man made no difference
@@christiancavelltaylor442I’m sorry but the heavier something is the faster it will fall 💀🗿
@@christiancavelltaylor442- thats only correct in a vacuum I believe.
But still, less friction and more potential energy being transferred into kinetic energy.
The slide was lined with mario kart boost strips.

It's official. Charlie has to go to Boston and test the slide out himself.
My theory, his uniform gathered shit loads of static electricity and the slide shot him out like a rail gun
That's some good holster retention, I want one of Does.
Like when you go down those slides at the county fair on burlap.
my farts are better than Charlie's farts
That, plus the fact he's a big grown adult with a slightly corpulent build. Minimal friction + increased weight/mass + gravity = way more acceleration than the tiny kids the slide was built for.

Police uniforms are made of polyester. So yeah, very low-friction.
kids could have also waxed it. we used to wax metal slides as kids with a candle or just scribbling on it with a crayon as you go down. it makes the slide extremely slippery no matter what you're wearing, if anything it makes it too slippery if you keep doing it and even the smallest of slides will have you shooting off the end like this at high speed

i remember hearing about plastic metal friction being super low, those bikes that can go like 60mph use plastic metal chains for lower friction. maybe the plastic vest gave the officer a very low friction situation and accelerated him like a railgun shot out the end of the slide

Charlie is the only guy that can turn a funny clip of a cop shooting out of a slide into a 8 and a half minute video
