Knowing how this trip will eventually end, these are the saddest, most bittersweet videos I’ve ever edited. Even with all that happened, I still hold nothing against the Russian people. You meet people there who hold all kinds of different opinions: many hate the leadership, many love the leadership, and then there’s everything in between. But even the Russians who had fully swallowed the propaganda were incredibly kind to me, even though I was an American and their supposed enemy. They treated me in a way I didn’t see anywhere else in Europe. They’re human, like anywhere else. My experiences were a good example of what happens when dictators and governments aren’t tearing people apart.
Im traveling here right now too and I feel the same. The people here are so nice and the country itself is amazing. Im sorry for what happened to you man. Though as im here myself i would love to know why they arrested you

There is a railway route from subarctic Siberia deep into Russia. The train travels through lifeless tundra and forest tundra, through giant forest streams and swamps, past the polar Urals - a giant chain of the Ural mountains in their northern part. The Ural Mountains are considered one of the most ancient mountain systems on the planet. The grandeur and alien surrealism of this whole system is simply amazing. These are the lands of the shamans. Those who traveled this route say that the view from the window of the greatness and power of these gigantic "stone buffaloes" stretching from the Russian Arctic to the desolate steppes of Central Asia (the giant Soviet Republic of Kazakhstan), among the impassable swamps of rivers and tundra through which the train runs, evokes mystical feelings in the traveler who sees it for the first time. According to the impressions of travelers, this is incomparable with any other mountains. The traveler feels like a grain of sand among these gigantic deserted spaces and is surprised by the enormous efforts and risks of the builders of this railway laid in a harsh climate in these impassable lands of shamans. Russian history, when for many centuries the Russian people were often on the verge of complete destruction and complete destruction of the state and never had such an abundance of funds and time for their development as prosperous and well-fed Europe and the West had, then what the Russians were able to do in these conditions the boundless "continent of Russia", having created numerous states and peoples that would never have appeared on the world map - this is a feat of the ancient titans and is comparable to the construction of the Egyptian pyramids among the sand and desert. That very "Russian dictatorship" is almost always the unity of the people under the banner of the leader in moments of critical danger in order to concentrate limited forces and resources to fight fate and death itself. An American, to whom his Jesus told that the main goal of life is the hysterical accumulation of "gold, fat and sugar" and the American's tomorrow has always been clear and planned - will never understand the Russian in its essence. The Russians, being between life and death all their life, were able to build the greatest states in world history. Although at the time of his birth, fate prepared for the Russians the only result - death at birth. Such a strength of spirit as the Russian people have - (or had in the past) - hardly any other people in the world have. And a subarctic train traveling through impassable tundra and swamps past the snow-capped mountains of the Urals reminds us of this.
Your videos are a great reminder that we're all just humans trying to just get through the day. There seems more similarities with folks throughout the world than differences.
@SabbaticalTommy I want to thank you personally for putting yourself in so much risk to bring us this content! I have always had a soft spot for the Russian people and culture. With the war and tensions being so high its genuinely heartbreaking that we as people cannot be free and open to enjoy each other due to stuffy old power hungry people sitting in offices trying to play the world and life like a chess board. It brings me tons of joy watching this and seeing that even when country tensions explode that the people of these countries still treat each other with respect and love. So much respect for you tommy! keep doing what you do!
I did mushroom & berry picking with the family when I was about 5/6 in the 90s. We left house very early at 4am and spend all day in the forest and left with full buckets of mushrooms and blueberries. I remember a cloud of mosquitoes followed us everywhere.
Very culturally important in Poland :) When mushrooms pop out lots of families go to "their spot" and collect them to dry them for cooking for the next year. A fair bit of the country eats "mushroom soup" on Christmas Eve.

Maybe I just missed it somehow, but I don't think so. Great videos in this series and these are all a wonderful reminder that there are really people living in these countries.
You know every time I watch this channel. Just shows people are generally good, it’s the governments acting like jerks. We are the victim of world leaders. Even though we’re about to get into a war with Russia because of Ukraine, these people seem like good people, and I would love to go camping with them with my kids and have an amazing family day with people who are supposed to be my enemy. It’s so wrong just good people trying to survive and be good families government sucks.
You ain't wrong, but it frightens me to think that people need a video like this to understand that. Like, did you think Russians just go around treating everyone like crap randomly? You could go to Yemen and people would be very kind to you.
I love your channel. Such a beautiful thing to see the warmth and kindness of people around the world. We are not enemies, it's those who seek to divide us and sow unrest among us in order to profit and control us that are the issue. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your journeys!

Tommy, I like very much your videos, the way you approach the landscapes and people, the perception, never cliché. But, you should not underestimate that Russia is at war and at war still indirectly with USA that now is sending ATACMS to kill Russians in Kursk and elsewhere in Russian soil. So, it is dangerous. As it is for Russians abroad, many of them are being detained in Germany, Norway, USA, Poland, England, France, South Korea etc. The reason? Whatever. They invent something to detain you and others, from both sides. I feel that most of the people from every country just want to live in peace and share their experiences... But the number of haters grows a lot in the wartime. Peace and strength. Hug from Brazil.
Great interaction with the principal and school children. Tommy, back in the 80s and 90s, we did take our classes on field trips to the forest and mountains, but it is no longer an option due to reasons you cited.
Tommy- you’re a New York City boy. Trust that out west in California’s Sierra Nevada mountains (and elsewhere throughout the west) our young kids still go adventuring into the mountains exactly like that! Even my toddler’s school is 90% outdoors in the woods.
I got chaga mushroom in my pantry. Supposedly good as a tea, for health and anti-cancer properties. The taste isn't really great. Thats why I got a bunch still sitting in a bag in my pantry.
That little girl on the hill. She’s gonna go far one day. Such a character! Listen any where you go there’s more good people than bad is what I’ve come to find out. You didn’t portray Russian lifestyle in any wrong way in any of these. Hopefully the government one day can see differently. And that’s for both sides.
Pretty interesting that the first mushroom you found in Siberia (called a Leccinum or scaber-stalk in english) is also one of the most common mushrooms in the Canadian praries, on the opposite side of the planet.

That's it. Now that both sides got their comments, stop tf arguing. This changes nothing.

30:20 Gangsters paradise playing in Russian? That's awesome!! Great Vlog Tommy 😎👍🏽
Gangstas paradise was really one of the most popular songs in Russia in 90s. Then at least a quarter of young men were gangsters.
Pavel, great message. Love, people, earth.❤--- milky way, orion's belt, ect. Peace.
A beautiful vlog beginning to end. Loved it!
Awesome video, Tommy ... my wife watches your videos with me some . She was blown away with the children on a school field trip in the woods climbing rocks.. She is an elementary school teacher also.. She said she'd love to do that with her children, but the school would never allow it for fear of a child getting hurt and suing the school system... America, at its worst.. There is hope for the world despite world leaders.... because of the good people..
🇺🇸I live in Alaska, a decent size population of people from Russia. All of them that I’ve met are hard working, just all around solid people!🇺🇸
I love your channel man! Favorite travel vlogger on the tube
This is classic Tommy. These are the videos that I love to watch.
Tommy you are so endlessly inspiring, thanks for all you do
For me, "picking mushrooms" has always been code for some sort of innuendo... and this video confirms it.

Your videos are a great reminder that we're all just humans trying to just get through the day. There seems more similarities with folks throughout the world than differences.
That's what I like about his videos.
Thanks for including the last clip, shows real humility & love

That mushroom picking I did with my Grandmother and rock climbing I did with my friends in then East Germany, when I was 6 yrs old what a great time to be a kid, and in the Winter straped on a pair of skies and didnt come home till dark, that was in the early 50s,

Very informative videos. That's why I like Tommy.
It's sad how we don't do school trips like that anymore. We did when I was a kid and I'm not even that old (Mid 30s!) I remember in WA state going to the beaches to study the crabs and doing lots of forest walks in school, studying the trees and plants. So fun!
Tatiana, Pavel and Tommy on a glorious adventure. To the Pacific and Andromeda galaxy and beyond! Thank you for sharing much about this lovely expansive nation.
Great video as always ! Good vibes
Quite amazing the number of English speaking Russians that you found. Sure that you won’t find many Russian speaking English/ Americans. A friendly non threatening ambience. Most everyone, everywhere wants to live their life & move on. Good YT video!

Great chemistry with Tatiana. And I'm super impressed by the young girl's english and her accent (or lack thereof). Pablo was a vibe, wholesome video he took in the end.
There's no such thing as a 'lack thereof' of accents, jeez. Think outside yourself for once.

That's right, people are afraid of some globalist regime around the world, and it's been around for a long time. Hello from Russia.
It changed my entire perception also because those people you met were very cool
Sabbatical! Always challenging the statusquo. You make the politicians and war mongers look stupid. Humanity should always come first.
Kinda odd, I'm not sure how much traction this video is getting, but it never popped up in my subscription feed or any of the relevant front page feeds. I was eagerly awaiting the resumption of videos after I saw your community post, but just wanted to let you know that you might not be getting as much viewership on this one without some help promoting it on other platforms.

Wow Maestro that video snagged me right at the start and stayed glued to screen. You had a wonderful holistic trip. Them folks are so easy-going and helpful! Great mountains... those Urals, though they kind of look like midgets compared caucasus, or rockies. Great job, Tommy!
It's not the Russians that are crazy to take kids on field trips in the mountains. It's the Americans who've become crazy thinking it's unsafe
We did to in the 90s, then all the pussies took over
Another awesome video brother love to see all the nice people you meet. God bless stay safe
Literally shed a tear at the end. Мы должны дружить 🤝🏻
Tommy- you’re a New York City boy. Trust that out west in California’s Sierra Nevada mountains (and elsewhere throughout the west) our young kids still go adventuring into the mountains exactly like that! Even my toddler’s school is 90% outdoors in the woods.
"will they give me crazy visions?"
"nah nah, just some protein"
that was funny. the part with the mushroom lady was hilarious & wholesome.
Good to see you again Tommy !
I got chaga mushroom in my pantry. Supposedly good as a tea, for health and anti-cancer properties. The taste isn't really great. Thats why I got a bunch still sitting in a bag in my pantry.
You're one adventurous guy! I'm always impressed by your willingness to learn the languages of so many different places. Stay safe out there.
Im 31 and grew up in GA mountains and wed always have school trips out in the woods and mountain just like this!
Pavel is a real one
A great video Tommy, keep up the great work.
Pretty interesting that the first mushroom you found in Siberia (called a Leccinum or scaber-stalk in english) is also one of the most common mushrooms in the Canadian praries, on the opposite side of the planet.
