hello Daniel i was researching hoplo catfish and came across this jewel! so very good thanks for the video and information!!🙂
These are some beautiful catfish mate 👍
Hoplos are basically the evolved form of Cory Cats!
Dear Daniel:
Now, there's a catfish an aquarist can appreciate. They don't stay hidden like a South American bumblebee catfish (Microglanis iheringi).
It seems there are quite a number of fish called "catfish." But, there are so many species that have barbels it's quite misleading to lump them all together. I chose the bumblebee largely because I like the look of the head. It has a large mouth, similar to my favorite pet, a bullhead catfish (probably (Ameiurus nebulosus) or (Ameiurus melas)). That one got too wild when fully grown and I had to give it to a man with a pond of catfish that are fed, but never caught.
Thank you for posting this interesting and informative video on the hoplo catfish (Megalechis thoracata).
All my best,
Sincerely,
E. J. Brinegar
Thanks E. J. This is the problem with Catfish isn't it? They are great fish but man either get too large for most people or spend much of their time hiding.
What an amusing and entertaining fish. Thanks for showing it to us also the setup you have.
Thanks Robert. Yeah they are wee characters right enough. Like Catfish versions of Clown Loach. They're good fun so they are.
My top favorite catfish. I once kept corydoras.. but went to Hoplo and stayed with them. I usuaIIy like to have some bigger fish in most of my tanks and since especially the female hoplo gets aIong well with plenty of other fish.. I rather keep hoplo. From my exp. they are also more resilient (to diseases.. or heaIth wise).. and from what I noticed some are smart-ish too. ( I have one for example that has a favorite resting spot into a big anubias plant and this MoFo always knows the right level and the same spot to get into 😂 90 % of the time he s accurate. 😂 )
Yeah they're funny fish, great personalities.
Cheers mate I’ve never seen these before. Great information and tank and video
Thanks Thirsty.
I know I said you can keep them with some American Cichlids I reckon your big beauties would be too much for these guys.
They are interesting though if you ever get a chance to try them.
Hey there, saw you on my stream today and wanted to say thank you!!! We upload every Thursday if you want to stay connected! Probably will be live again tomorrow early afternoon!! This is another great very informative video! Always well done.
Haha, yes bud. I watch your videos regularly and have commented on a few. Enjoy your channel so I do and the stream was ace. Good fun.
@@DanielKeepingFish Thanks so much!!!
As always, a joy to watch. One love. X
I'm taking that as a very nice compliment. Thank you very much.
Nice video and beautiful catfishes ...like#21
Thank you very much Marco.
Hoplo's are one of the friendliest catfish I've ever kept (that's bigger than a Cory)
For sure. I've always found them pretty chill and they don't see to bother any fish I've ever kept them with at all.
I've never seen those type of catfish thanks for sharing FAM 👊
Yeah there doesn't seem to be too much about them on RUclips. Strange because they are very cool fish right enough.

Those are nice looking fishes 😊👌🏻 thanks for sharing!! keep in touch!! 🤝🤗
I've seen loads of your videos. Don't know where you find all those clips but loads of good laughs for sure.
Those catfish are way cool
Haha, they are Crystal. You don't see them much but they're great.
gotta love hoplos. charming guys
I know right? Great wee characters.
Best catfish
Nice hoplo info
Thanks man. Not much on these guys out there. Well, on RUclips anyway.
Great content thanks for sharing 👊🏾💪🏾👍🏾
Thanks OG 👊
Very nice info
Thanks JC. Not much info on them out there so hopefully someone will find it useful.
As always very informative video. Thanks for sharing.:) Sadly I never liked the cat fish because of their whiskers and crazy appetite.
Thanks bud. We all like different things eh? That's one of the awesome things about our hobby, the variety which means everyone can find something that suits their taste.
@@DanielKeepingFish very true indeed.
Whiskers are for finding food and not wasting anything
amazing fish as well
I have albino ones now. I feel like they're even cooler!
Oh nice these guys look cool
They sure are bud. Dead interesting and peculiar.
Great information brother
Nice video bro!
I like that! :3
Awesome Video Thanks for Sharing FishFam NJAE19
Thank you, great information, I keep 3 with bronze Cory's and pearl danios. I've left a lot of tank floor over to dunes of sand for the Cory's to plough. But a few rocks like yours won't harm. I've no live plants, but have artificial broad leafed ones. My lighting is er....daylight or moonlight !
Good looking active fish you have there, how are they now? Any young?
First of great video and very informative, I’ve had my 3 for 3 years and they are great like a bigger and more intelligent corydora. My female is pushing 5” and the 2 males are just over 4” I don’t believe any of the catfish are hoping to breed, at least I hope not (because the cichlids already have established territories) I have yet to find something they won’t eat and they are great for taking any damage my large EBA may give them. The 3 are currently in a 200L with 3 different types of S.A cichlids.
Thanks very much SP. Yeah they're great fish hey. Like you say a nice alternative to Cories if you're looking for something larger and pretty bomb proof.
I prefer Hoplo over Corydoras.. Bigger (kinda smarter).. and also more resilient (health wise / to diseases).. Fairly ez to care for too. (and they get along with plenty of other fish.. especially the females hoplo.. and many others when fed enough). But as you also know.. males can be aggressive especially in the breeding periods. (I also seen some dominant males too)
Yeah I'd agree they're probably more interesting than Cories. A lot of people don't have big enough tanks for them though so the Cories are definately good alternatives in that regard.
Good vid mate.. What's the growth rate on these?.. Thanks
Thank you very much.
They reach full maturity in about a year but they grow pretty quickly. They'll be a good few inches in half that time.
@@DanielKeepingFish thanks mate I'm getting 3 for my 76g
@@aquaticwong ah, cool. You'll love them. They're good fun.
Do you know if it would be possible to keep one with a bristlenose pleco?
I have three at the moment in a tank that also has a Bristlenose in it and there haven't been any problems. It is a big tank; 450L Juwel Rio and there are quite a few other fish; Severum, Acara, Rainbow Cichlids and Tetra.
Hope that helps.
@@DanielKeepingFish i have a 200l tank and currently have a super red bristlenose pleco that mostly keeps to himself. I would like to add one spotted hoplo to my community tank and your input was helpful thank you!
Hello, one of my hoplo catfish only has two of the Wiskers on its face while the other has four. Any idea why this is?
It may just have grown like that or been injured at some stage.
If you can't see any sign of infection, open wounds and the fish appears healthy, is eating well, etc I wouldn't be too worried about it. 👍
In Suriname they are called Katrina Kwie
I got one with 3 other that are Sokeh and you have a flat head version
Man I can't wait to get them into a IBC tote
They are in a tank with 5 Tilapia's and 3 black Accara cichlids
They are one of the best fish to keep
Very aggressive feeders they hold their own well against the cichlids
The Tilapia's are growing that's why I'm getting them into the ICB tote by the end of this month with everyone else in the tank
Yeah they're great fish hey. Interesting to watch and as you say they are not phased by more aggressive tank mate. Highly underrated fish in my opinion.
@@DanielKeepingFish
Its very common to see them in Aquariums over here
I haven't seen many people on RUclips keep these guys accept for you and a few people
Pretty underrated fish indeed
Their cousins the ones called sokeh are an invasive species in Florida
If you are interested in getting those
Their tails are forked shaped and they don't have spots on them
Only on my second tank have to weight for these big babies.
That's one thing this hobby definately teaches us, patience.
Hope you get to try them at some point and sure you'll enjoy them when you do.
I heard they can sting i have 2 and im very weary about puting my hand in the tank now
Most Catfish have poisoned barbs bud.
Generally if you let these guys get to know you and you do your best not to startle them you're good.
Care needs to be taken when netting them for any reason of course.
Any gulpers
Sorry Aaron I'm not 100% sure what you mean bud.
I got an 55 gallin but i think thats to small right??
I'd be happy keeping a group in a 55. The don't get huge like some Catfish, about six inches fully grown.
I just got six so called marble hoplos, but they are just universally brown :( Nothing like yours. Did I get Hoplosternum littorale, rather than Megalechis thoracata?
Granted they've been in the aquarium less than 24 hours, maybe the spots will come in later?
Here are two of them, just added into the tank:
