  • The third-generation Accord was introduced in Japan on 4 June 1985 and in Europe and North America later that year. It had a very striking exterior design styled by Toshi Oshika in 1983, that resonated well with buyers internationally. One notable feature was the hidden headlamps. Because this generation was also sold as the Honda Vigor, the Accord received the hidden headlamps. Honda's Japanese dealership channel called Honda Verno all had styling elements that helped identify products only available at Honda Verno. As a result, Japanese market Accords had a Honda Verno styling feature but were sold at newly established Japanese dealerships Honda Clio with the all-new, luxury Honda Legend sedan, and international Accords were now visually aligned with the Prelude, the CR-X, and the new Integra.
The third-generation Accord became the first Honda to employ double wishbones at both the front and rear ends. While more expensive than competitors' MacPherson strut systems, this setup provided better stability and sharper handling for the vehicle. All had front sway bars and upper models had rear sway bars as well. Brakes were either small all-wheel discs with twin-piston calipers (only available on the Japanese-market 2.0-Si model), larger all-wheel discs with single-piston calipers or a front disc/rear drum system. ABS was available as an option on the 4-wheel disc brake models, though not in North America. Base model Accords rode on 13-inch steel wheels with hubcaps with more expensive models having the option of 14-inch alloy wheels.
In 1989, the last year of production for the third generation, the SE-i trim returned again to the American market in sedan and coupe models. Standard features in the SE-i included leather-trimmed seats and door panel inserts, alloy wheels, power-assisted 4-wheel disc brakes, tinted glass, air conditioning, power steering, power windows, power moonroof (sedan only), dual-outlet exhaust, dual body-colored power mirrors, and a Bose audio system with steering wheel-mounted controls. Additional standard features included cruise control, fold-down rear seat backs, adjustable steering column, quartz digital clock, remote trunk release, rear window defroster and intermittent wipers. Two color combinations were available for the sedan: Charcoal Granite Metallic with gray leather interior trim or Tuscany Taupe Metallic with beige leather interior trim. For the coupe, two different color combinations were available: Asturias Gray Metallic with gray leather interior trim and Brittany Blue-Green Metallic with beige leather interior trim.

Wow! Beautiful cars. I owned a 1989 Honda Accord SE-I 78k original miles. Drove all the way to Maryland to buy it from the original owner then drove it 6 hours back. Everything worked on the car like brand new but I sold it last year and now I miss it

This generation of Accord was probably peak Honda. They made most every other car on the road look like ox carts.

I can attest that they still maje them to a higher standard than their peers in the industry. I have a 2015 Honda Accord EX-L V6 Coupe with 96,600 miles and have owned it for almost 9 years! ZERO ISSUES! Ive done all the maintenance myself diligently and just had the timing belt service done with the water pump tensioner serpentine belt coolabt flush and im doint the spark plugs myself. The car still sounds brand new. Ive done the transmission drain and fill 4 times and it shifts perfectly. I love my honda and will probably keep it another 5 years plus. The Accord....from Honda! Simply THE BEST!!!

I'm a diehard Honda enthusiast, but I disagree with you 100%. Hondas are not built like they used to be. Toyota wears that crown.
Toyota has never had any major design flaws like Honda has.

@@andydhillon1977 I LOVE TOYOTA! NO QUESTION! My daughter drives a 21' Corolla. Sister drives a 19' Corolla hatchback. My mom is currently on her 8th Lexus ES, a 23' Uktra luxury. And my sister drives a 16' CRV. I'm talking about Honda vs the Domestics and everyone else. Every single company can have "they don't make them like they used to" said about them because EVERYTHING has gotten so technologically advanced in electronics and drivetrain . The reason TOYOTA has been able to remain extremely durable and reliable is because they keep old technologies way way longer because they are tried and true. Look what happens when they venture into new territory "New Tundra twin turbo engine problems " the sane as everyone else. Honda has been excellent for me and my family abd so had TOYOTA. These two brands are definitely built to a higher standard than the rest of the industry. I will only buy TOYOTA HONDA LEXUS AND ACURA. Every manufacturer has slipped but it's because things are no longer simple. More moving parts equals more opportunities for component failure. I SIMPLY BELIEVE THAT TOYOTA AND HONDA WILL FIX THEIR MISTAKES BETTER THAN ANYONE ELSE ON THE PLANET! IM STICKING TO WHAT I BELIEVE BECAUSE ITS BASED ON MINE AND MY FAMILIES PERSONAL EXPERIENCE AS WELL AS THE DATA!

I had an 1987 CA5 Accord hatch back in the 1990s. It was brilliant. Sleek styling, nimble handling, and excellent manual gearbox. I miss it. It's a shame cars like the ones Honda produced in the 1980s & 90s have gone extinct.

They smelled good to, and the identity of the car alone was very unqiue. I miss the voice over person for these commerical and it always had a story to tell. The instrumental smooth jazz music what was main stream music it's anymore. Can i go back to the 80's and 90's.
