    This part of the internet... the part where kind people help others out with inexpensive, effective DIY projects with clear instructions and accessible components... this is top tier, and you are top tier people! I've been going back and forth about whether our newly blind dog needed a halo (he's getting around great in just a few days of adjusting), but now that I can just convert one of his existing harnesses like this for a small amount of time and money, it's a no-brainer. Thank you for being wonderful people! PLUS, I like this much better than the eye or visor-level ones, this design seems to provide much more 'bumper' and less obstruction to their natural motion.

    I don't want this to come off like one of those "faith in humanity restored" clichés but thank you for taking the time to do this and thank you for sharing it. It's very comforting to know that good people are out there.

    I already had this harness for my chihuahua. I used zip ties instead of the bolts and this was a great alternative. Thanks for making the time to make this video. My Chihuahua is 16 and has lost partial vision in one eye, she was running into walls nonstop and thumping her head. She’s more confident in her steps now with the bumper buddy and not hitting the walls anymore as her head is protected. Thanks so much y’all♥️

    Omg!!! Thank you so much for your help showing how to diy this little halo! I work with a veterinarian and today someone come to the office with a 14 month old Franch Bulldog who got blind.. :( And he wanted to put her to sleep... I don't let him!!! No way I will!!! I showed him this video, so he can make a little halo for her! He loves her, he cryed after she lost her other eyes to due to the over breeding of this dogs... I explained everything that she going to be okay, she will remembers and gets around the house like before! He don't know that.. So hopefully everything is going to be okay! Thank you again!!! So much!!! You guys are angels!!! ❤❤❤

    What sweethearts...thank you for doing this. To buy the 'halo' for blind dogs is $115-320 !!! You'd think that the people marketing these would CARE about the actual BLIND DOGS and less about lining their pockets. What are people who can't afford this supposed to do to help their darling....and then you guys come along

    My chihuahua lived to be 20 - best wishes to Buddy and both of you! My husband is English and I am American - I got a visa to move to the UK and ws ready to go... but we both knew I couldn't go without my dog! Since he was elderly, frail, and blind there was no way I was going to put him in the cargo hold!! I flew to Germany since UK doesn't allow pets in cabin, and we drove for like 10 hours to get back to the UK with my dog and my cats. Seeing a couple so dedicated to both each other and to their pets really made me smile, felt so good to know I wasn't alone and there are people out there like my husband and I :)
    I was a vet tech for a long time in my life, I have had many pets, and people are always shocked when I tell them I've never had a dog as loyal and well behaved as my Chihuahua :) Great invention, please give some cuddles and treats to Buddy on my behalf, I have a major soft spot for cute Chi's :)

    We made this over the weekend and it's working fairly well. I do feel like the plastic strapping gives a bit too easily and warns our pug rather than stopping him. We are probably going to add some metal strapping between the two pieces of plastic to make it more firm and prevent our pug from walking into a wall. The pieces will then be wrapped with electrical tape to make sure they don't separate.

    This brought tears to my eyes because we love our dogs so much we will do anything to help them and you did just that. My sweet rescue chow mix is blind (turned blind overnight a year after we adopted her - it's been five years). It is amazing that she can still get around without hurting herself. I have a feeling it's partly from memory and partly from her using her mane of hair to help navigate. But it's good to know that your amazing invention is there in case things change for her. Thank you so much for sharing with the world!

    My dog had a pinched nerve and as a result got blind. Luckily for my family, the nerve was relieved and my dog has now regained her vision. However, she did experience blindness for a week or so and those few weeks were the most difficult and heartbreaking weeks of my family's lives. My dog was so scared to walk around since she kept bumping into walls and my family and I felt so helpless. I just want to express how amazing this invention is and thank you for sharing this with the world.

    Thanks for the tutorial! I made my 20lb dog a Bumper Buddy this week. Unfortunately the strap material recommended did not hold up well for a dog his size. So I cut off the handle to a dollar store Easter Basket and used that instead. So far it's working out for him!

    Thank you for taking the time to make this video. The instructions are very clear and this is definitely affordable.
    Our dog has had a rough year medically. About a year ago we found out he had an autoimmune disease. That diagnosis let us to finding out he has heart failure, and very recently, diabetes. Now he has developed cataracts from the diabetes and has rapidly been losing his sight. It's hard to see a once very confident and courageous dog suddenly become a little unsure of himself. He's already gotten some bumps and bruises because of the sight loss, even almost drown in the pool. It's been hard but this makes it easier. Thank you

    Thank you so much for sharing this! This is exactly what my pup needs.
    My dog has PRA & we got him the optivisor to protects his eyes and face, but he recently cut his chest and ear running into a chair pretty hard while playing.
    I will keep the optivisor for use on walks, as it helps him be more confident in walking since he knows nothing can hurt his face/eyes. I'm going to make this for him to use around the house and while in new places. Perfect. and easy! Thank you again!
    Also, for anyone else with a blind dog, the book Living With Blind Dogs has been a huge help for me.

    Thank you so much for sharing this. My black and tan dachshund has just gone blind due to his diabetes. I want to give him all the help I can, but the cost of the popular name brand Halo is absurdly expensive. Talk about capitalizing on peoples emotional distress. Thanks for sharing this. Our Valentine has been going blind for years. Now that she is completely blind she is confused and runs into everything, causing harm to her recently damaged eye. She's a 16 year old Jack Russell and hates being limited. We have looked at other harnesses. They are so expensive there is no way we could purchased one of those that our Jack may not even keep on. This gives us hope to help her last years be happy.

    Thank you so much for posting this video. Both My husband and I are disabled and there is no way we can afford a 70-80.00 harness for our blind girl. This will help us out a lot so much! Just knowing that our baby girl will not be injuring herself mean more than all the money in the world. I have been feeling really down about not being able to afford the expensive one so I am glad I found your DIY video because it is more in our budget!

    For anyone with a large dog, the hanger straps won't be sturdy enough for the length you'll need. But, on the same aisle at home depot (the aisle with pvc pipes) you can find a 5 foot length of pvc that is perfect. It is the smallest diameter they carry in the 5 feet pre cut lengths and is about 1/4 inches in diameter. You can drill holes through it and attach with #8 screws (I used 1 inch length screws) and the exact same harness. In my home depot they were in boxes close to the parts for sprinkler systems.
    Great info thank you!

    Thank you so much. I have seen other products like "muffins halo" but they are so expensive I couldnt afford to buy one. This is right in my price range. Plus I can make it custom instead of trying to send in my dogs measurements and risk getting the wrong size. I'm little dude is a pug so his size is not the average "small medium or large" his chest is huge but his nose head measurement is way off the regular medium size. This video is perfect. Cheap supplies, easy to follow and shows the finished product in use. Exactly what is necessary to make your own. I thank you and my little dude Jake thanks you.

    This is fantastic. You guys should consider taking this idea and making a business out of it. If I had a blind dog I would give this a shot for sure but I know a lot of other people may not have the patience to gather the materials and assemble everything. However, if it was available to order online they'd probably be more than willing to slap down some money for one.

      Hello there! I'm looking to make one of these for a larger blind/hard of hearing dog. I'm not sure if the hanger strap will be sturdy enough. Could you share a link or otherwise clarify what landscape tubing you used? I'm not familiar with landscaping materials. Thanks :)

    • @nnamerz
      @nnamerz 2 года назад

      @@janellemartinez380 I think he was referring to 1/2" diameter "poly pipe". It's basically a rigid, thin-walled plastic hose that is typically used for landscape irrigation/sprinklers. And if that is what he was referring to, then I can totally see how it would be significantly stronger and more beneficial (especially for a larger dog). It might be a bit heavy for a really small dog though. And by "nut cap", I believe he was referring to "cap nuts" or "acorn nuts".

I love how I can create a sturdy, comfortable, reliable bumper for her. I just ordered all of the materials listed in your video and will be creating this for her next week.. Comparable "halo" products are upwards of $90. Some of the other poorly reviewed products are much cheaper. Thank you! If I remember, and am able to, I'll post a picture with finished product!

      I'm sorry to hear about her losing her sight. It's always a difficult thing to deal with.
      Yes, the ones online can be quite expensive but they work well with some dogs. If you do end up making ours, try using half pieces of duct tape around the bumper for stability. Your dog weighs a lot more than little Buddy, so I hope for the best!! If needed, I would try using a sturdier material as the bumper. :)
      Can't wait to hear about it!

      Oops! Sorry, I misread the age as the weight! I saw your other comment and those materials should work well with a four pound dog! :)

    Thank you so much for posting this video!! We adopted a sweet little blind chihuahua from animal control, last month. He's the same color as your Buddy, and we had already named him Buddy before we saw your video! We're going to make Buddy a bumper tomorrow:) Will try to post a pic

    Thanks for this. I just made a large one for my 90 lb. dog. I used 3/4" machine screws instead of 1/2" and added a layer of metal hanger strap to the two layers of poly so it wasn't so droopy/floppy, then wrapped it all in white duct tape. He's about done with experimenting with it today but I hope he adapts to it. It might need more rigidity, I'm not sure. The strap is like 51" long for his so it's going to need a lot more rigidity than for a tiny dog.
    The hanger strap is in the plumbing dept. of Home Depot, if it helps anyone. I had to ask 3 employees. LOL

    I'm so glad I found this! Our dachshund has gone blind in the past two months and the vet says there's nothing to do for it. The poor girl has been so depressed with hitting walls and getting lost in the backyard! I can't wait to have this ready for her!

    • @Zepharis
      @Zepharis  8 лет назад

      Aww, poor baby. Did you make one? How did it turn out?
      Try adding duct tape to the band to see if it helps with stability, especially for a bigger dog.

    • @Tarcruel
      @Tarcruel 8 лет назад

      It worked great! We ended having to go to a plastics store to get a thicker strip of plastic because she's quite a bit bigger than the chi in the video. But it's been a life-saver!

    Thank you for your video, we have two small poodles and want to make these to help them from bumping hard into a wall. They are young when we rescued them. Love your idea. They are the best friend to have.

    • @Zepharis
      @Zepharis  6 лет назад

      Aww I hope for the best! If they are larger, I would try either using a sturdier material for hoop or using duct tape (I know, kinda tacky! But whatever works!!) to make it stronger. :)

    This is wonderful, thank you so much for sharing! We just rescued a blind pup and halos on the market are just way too expensive. I would probably place some pieces of leather or neoprene over the hardware that was anywhere near my pup in case of irritation. Again, thank you so much of all of your help! You all are such a cute family.

    Thanks for the tutorial! Our dog recently went blind so I plan on fabricating one of these. Instead of a bolt and washer I might use "Chicago Screws". They're flat on both sides. I'll let you know how it turns out.

    God bless you for sharing this! Our baby is a 14yr old Shih-Tzu and has gone totally blind. We tried to do Cataract surgery on both eyes but she was not a good candidate. It kills me to see her bumping into everything and lately she will just sit in place and not want to move. When we take her out we have to pull her on the leash at times because she's so frightened to walk now. We are headed to home depot to pick up the hardware and make a bumper buddy. Thanks again!!!

    Thank you! My 10 yo Rat Terrier went quickly blind and is not a candidate for cataract surgery. It is so sad to see her banging into things. One suggestion: use the straps to determine where to put the first holes, then you don't have to punch additional holes in the straps.

I've told my husband about this and he doesn't believe me that someone has invented something that can help blind dogs live a life without harming themselves. I've made my list of things that I need from your video to make this work for her. I'm excited to see how this works for her. I will let you know in a couple of weeks!!
