What makes me impulse-buy second hand or in stores like Marshalls/Winners is the "hunt" mindset, you are looking sometimes for an hour through a pile of clothes, so when I find something remotely decent I get a dopamine release from having "found" something and it becomes harder to let it go!

What is difficult for me is finding the right shape, the right colour, the right fabric so I have to look everywhere: second hand, boutiques, e shops, etc...I like second hand but I rarely find there all my criteria in one garment ...

I read a report that said 1 in 20 Americans are suffer from hoarding disorder. And that's just the people who are diagnosed and seeking treatment. I can definitely see an underlying mental health crisis at the root of our overconsumption. Hoarding, shopping addiction, all of it relates to an attempt to self-medicate rather than addressing the issues you have. As a hoarder in recovery, I'll admit that it was a hell of a lot easier and more "comfortable" to shop than to handle my childhood trauma. But doing the latter has made me a far stronger person. I just wish more people had access to help.

can totally see how this is becoming more likely in our society. i'm so happy that you're doing better and addressed the issues, hopefully talking about things like this & the underconsumption core trending will inspire ppl to seek help if they need it!!

My favorite way to use Pinterest is that I create a seasonal mood board of outfits I love over the course of a few weeks. Then, I go through and curate the board, deleting any pins that were spur-of-the-moment and don’t really fit my actual style, or ones that aren’t realistic for my lifestyle. All that is obvious, but here’s where it gets actually helpful: I rearrange the board to group like pieces together, which helps me realize that oh hey, I happen to pin a ton of outfits with white button down shirts, seem to be drawn to high waisted denim, and apparently really love rusty browns and oranges. This helps me narrow down my thrift list to the types of pieces that I’m most drawn to and keeps me from being distracted by things that look cute in the store but aren’t going to get any real use in my closet.

I actually like to arrange the spur-of-the-moment 'unrealistic' items into another moodboard, instead of deleting them - I'm not saying your approach is wrong, but I find the 'fantasy' informs the direction of my style *evolution*.
In other words, since many purchase new clothes because they're 'bored' with their current wardrobe, thinking about future purchases this way helps me to stay on track.
TL;DR: Humans are ever evolving, & that's okay - I find accommodating that (instead of repressing it) leads to me making better future purchases too!

This is great advice for finding one specific garment to incorporate into a wardrobe! One thing that I as a plus sized person struggle with is seeing an outfit that's really cute on a straight size model and then having to stop and think about how that same outfit will NOT necessarily look the same on my body type. Adding in "plus size" in your search key terms might help if anyone has that same struggle! And of course, remember that you can wear anything you want any time you want, no matter what your body shape. 💖

The pretty privilege thing is so true. For me, it's also the image's backdrop. I am so Influenced to buy things that pop on a glistening Tahitian beach, rather than my grungy city. The feature of making a sticker and adding that to a document really helps me see the clothes rather than the scenery.

So true, that second hand purchase should also be intentional! I recently started looking for some specific y2k/2000s items on depop (haven’t used the app in years) and tbh it gave me fomo. I got sent offers for items I liked that expired after 24h and so many things sold out within a few days. I almost bought something after finding it because I was like what if it’s my perfect dress and it gets sold, but decided not to buy it because I need some more time to think about whether I really like the item and if it adds something to my wardrobe. Really love you tips, I never thought about analyzing what I don’t like, thank you.

I sew, so my downfall are usually nice materials. I would literally buy stuff, not even with the intention of wearing it directly, but because I had a vision of how I might upcycle it.

I've been a big thrifter for over 15 years, I love a bargain and have a mostly 2nd hand wardrobe. Recently, before buying an item, I've been asking myself, "Can I see myself getting 30 wears out of this?" This prompt works just as well for thrift or new purchases. It really weeds out the things that don't fit my personal style, are poor quality, too worn out, or fantasy self items that don't fit my lifestyle, no matter how lovely and precious they may be. I'll leave them for someone else to find. I've found that my wardrobe ride-or-die pieces are always an unequivocal "yes!" This (along with a 3 Items per thrift trip policy) has really been helping me break the thrift-to-resell cycle and keep my wardrobe manageable.

I really miss Polyvore, it was a great way of putting outfits together either using what you had or items on your wishlist. There are other apps similar but not quite the same. I sometimes think the one item in, one item out is a good way to keep a wardrobe from getting out of hand and realizing which pieces you can't part with, making you less likely to shop hopefully. And hey, you used my comment, cool!!

As an ex Polyvore girly I resonate so hard with this comment, I've started using Indyx this summer and it's honestly a lot of work up front but super worth it in the end. I spend hours making outfits again like when I was younger and they're obviously way more attainable than Polyvore since I'm using my actual clothes (not just aspirational pieces). Would recommend!

Just yesterday I was thinking about such a thing: I often really like the shein swimsuit shape and already bought two from the Vinted...but then I realized the fact I buy may send a message to the people that they can buy as much from shein as they want and they if they don't like it they just sell it...meaning that this contributes to the fast fashion too even though my shopping was intentional (I always ask myself if I see myself to love that piece of a clothing...if answer is no, i dont buy...saved me a lot of money thought 😅)

Second hand shopping can also be very disappointing. I’ve had things on my wishlist for a while and I was looking on eBay for the second hand version. I came across a few problems. The item I really wanted was not my size. That was disappointment number one. Number two, I found one in my style but it was a fake. Love your videos. Just a general thinking about Pinterest, why do we feel the need to “recreate” an outfit? I’ve been seeing groups of friends walking on the street and they all dress the same to the point that gets difficult to differentiate one from another. People nowadays rely on Pinterest to the point where they have the exact same clothes in the exact color, exact brand, exact everything (where’s personal style?)

i have a love / hate relationship with pinterest!! i think as someone who's not that confident yet on their personal style it's a great resource for inspo, but also some of the outfits on there are v chronically online / weird irl and you can sometimes tell when someone is copying a pinterest fit. i think it's about learning how to use pinterest as a tool rather than direct outfit inspo and end up dressing the same as everyone else!

edit: i also find using the 'body types' feature on pinterest really helpful as it helps me figure out whether i would like the way a piece would look on my specific body type rather than just seeing it look good on a certain other body type!
