    I think it is super important for them to be able to connect with things from the natural world. Look into Biomagnification, also known as bioamplification or biological magnification, any concentration of a toxin, such as pesticides, in the tissues of tolerant organisms at successively higher levels in a food chain. If your cats are eating this, you should consider not using that toxic soil. Since the cats are laying in that soil and then grooming and licking themselves, they are consuming it. This can cause severe neurological problems and shorten their lives dramatically. When I make my grass beds, I use worm castings and coco coir.

  • @jokinplaysgames
    @jokinplaysgames 3 года назад +14

    Coco coir. 2 inches. Sow seeds. Water lightly. Cover with about 1 to 1 half inch coco coir. Water lightly. Then pat down gently to offer a firm bed for the roots to take. Much better and faster then potting soil.
    You can have grass ready in a matter of days this way. As the coco coir allows for better aeration to the roots. And drainage. As well as water retention. Also. I've never soaked my seeds. Straight into the mix. Hope this helps you out.

    this is the method for growing wheatgrass that I feel works best ( works every time for me )
    - soak seeds in cool water for 12 hours
    - spread over about an inch of vermiculite (try not to overlap)
    - put in the dark for about 2-3 days (in a closet or some other windowless place)
    -when it starts to sprout to about an 1.5 inches tall, move to indirect light
    -mist once a day, water only a little, but every day
    voila!

    One nice thing about feline project assistants. If you drop something, ie a screw, if you watch them they will look immediately to where it fell. This can save a lot of searching. You have to look as soon as it leaves your fingers, or you may miss the clue.

    I just put the seeds in the pots I plan to grow them in and place those pots in a container with water {self watering method) and just switch them out every couple of days. I plant 4 pots every week for my cats (13) so they will always have cat grass. For grass beds, I've commandeered a 3' x 3' shallow pan which I punched holes using a thick nail and hammer. I use cardboard to divide the tray in half, and grow half of the tray every week. With the the half that's grown out, I will take it out of the tray and place that grass in my cat's catio. If you have a balcony, and your landlord is cool, you can build a catio and use this method. I did when my wife and I lived in an apartment. It's easier now that we have a home with a backyard.

    This isn't meant to be taken in a bad way, just informing you! Miracle-gro is extremely harmful for the environment, YOU (if you consume your plants), and ESPECIALLY for your pets who are eating the cat grass. Google the harmful effects of miracle-gro (even their organic line) compared to other organic soils and you can find a lot of information. If you're gardening, you might as well do it organically, sustainably, and in a way that will help not just you, but the planet. Otherwise, cute video and I'll definitely be trying this! :)

    How long does this tray of grass lasts for you? How often do you need to make a completely new tray of grass? Do you just water it daily? Or how do you care for it to make it last longer?

    • @ElizabethPlants
      @ElizabethPlants  2 года назад +1

      All of that depends. In my old apartment. It was very dry so they lasted maybe two weeks with watering when dry. However, my cats also dug at it pretty aggressively so it didn't really have a fighting chance. If they were just laying in it and I had a more bright/humid environment, I'd have to water less and it would last longer.

    • @ElizabethPlants
      @ElizabethPlants  2 года назад

      I've not heard that. It would make sense to me though. You can also make your own mix. I generally do use organic or my own mix these days. I dont notice a difference between organic and not, but o dont think I would. The difference would likely be with long-term health if anything

    • @aiai-j7i
      @aiai-j7i 2 года назад +2

      Yes, organic soil tends to have a lot of fungus gnats. I am mixing my own soil...coco coir (an sustainable alternative to peat moss), coco husks or orchid bark, perlite or pumice, and earthworm castings...the latter is a natural fertilizer that does not burn the roots. I had a hard time finding perlite or peatmoss at big box hardwood stores that did not have Miracle Gro fertilizer in it! You may not need all those ingredients for growing cat grass, however--I think just coco coir (or peat moss ) and some earthworm castings or organic fertilizer should be fine. Just ordered my seeds! Good health begins in the soil!

    Hey I read the reviews about the seeds on Amazon and many people complain about finding bugs after a while, what’s your experience?

    • @ElizabethPlants
      @ElizabethPlants  3 года назад

      I have had zero bug experiences with these and I've used exclusively these seeds for a while now

    I wouldn’t let it grow so long. Trimming it will make it sturdier.

    • @ElizabethPlants

      They stopped using them a while back, so I transitioned to a smaller self-watering pot for them for the winter

  • @amandawhite2561

    How often are you watering/misting n how much. Watching this I realized I use to overwater and the grass would mold n tons of bugs would swarm. Also do you put another pan underneath to catch water if there are holes in the main pan? Thank you for the video! My cats love chewing on grass and cold weather n animals contaminating or bad grass can make them sick.

    • @ElizabethPlants
      @ElizabethPlants  2 года назад +1

      I water when dry thoroughly either outside or in the tub then let it drain before putting it back. A catch tray would work too!

  • @cybercat1991
    @cybercat1991 3 года назад

    I need one for my baby!!! Thanks for the video. Do you use a tray or anything for under the box? There are holes right, so wouldn’t go the soil or water go through that?

    • @ElizabethPlants
      @ElizabethPlants  3 года назад

      I just water it in the tub, my holes are small, so soil doesn't get through

    • @ElizabethPlants
      @ElizabethPlants  2 года назад

      It depends on your cats, care and environment. My cats destroy quicker than other cats might. Also, they might struggle in drier environments

    Loved this vid and was so excited to grow it for my cat! Unfortunately the seeds completely molded after two days :( was so upset but hey that’s the reality of being a beginner planter. My question is, do you think I overwatered the seeds?( I saw some other cat grass videos where they soaked the seeds so I kind of did an in between) I also covered the bowl they were in but didn’t close the lid fully, maybe that’s why? Or maybe the seeds were just simply bad? Going to try again today and follow along to this exactly

    • @ElizabethPlants
      @ElizabethPlants  2 года назад +1

      It could be too much moisture in the root area. I recommend adding drainage or reducing humidity! I soak the seeds some of the time, that doesnt seem to change much so long as I dont cover the seeds while soaking
