    Thank you Dr. K! I am diagnosing a circuit board with a DC motor controller. The MOSFET gate is driven with a totem pole circuit. Your video was super easy to understand and provided me with confidence to troubleshoot this controller.

    I can buy a digital temperature sensor with digital display, but in a classic 53 year old GM truck. It and the EFI engine fell into my hands for free. My son gave up on the old truck, then hit a tree off black ice in a 2003 Tahoe. That engine is going to make my daily driver more reliable.
    My task is cooling the transmission, using a NTC thermistor in a voltage divider circuit with a potentiometer to drive a N-Type mosfet. I have not measured the amps the fan pulls but would guess it’s 24-30. I wanted to use a matched relay to make a simple but robust circuit. A relay makes future diagnostics easy, as I have room next to others.
    One gentleman said I would have hysteresis in the relay. Your video was the first time I have heard of a driver for the mosfet. The store bought on loosed it’s memory if power is lost. Hate to ask, but do you have any thoughts? I have 3 parts bins of electrical components my grandpa owned. He was an electrical engineer and ran field generators for a new thing called “Radar” in WW-II. I lost him the year before I married, 40 years back.

      Hi Dean, you could probably use a DC relay to drive the MOSFET. Watch your Vgs limits as you do not want to exceed the max values on the data sheets. Thanks for watching. -Dr. K

    For diy, a soic (1.27mm pitch) would not need a stencil, and they make one: NCP5901BDR2G

    I want to drive my igbt at 15 volt but the Ic can push the current but I get 15 volt on the output at 250 milliamperes but I need 5 amp at 15 voltage to draw the 5000 watt inverter I design with igbt so can the totem pole base receive the 15 volt with 2k resistor will the base break down at the higher volt of the totem will work

      You might want to search for a driver or will need to design your own totem circuit. I would look for a driver for IGBTs first.

    Does bootstrapping limits switching frequency ?

      Great question which applies to high-side driving of typically a P-channel MOSFET. The answer is yes. However, the switching frequency range is relatively broad and will partially determine the value of boot-strap capacitor used. As an example, it is impossible to never switch because the boot-strap capacitor requires charge and this capacitor charges up when one side is switched to ground either through the driver or through the low-side switch. Once charged, the boost-capacitor can then be used to drive the MOSFET and acts like a floating voltage supply. However, the capacitor will eventually discharge over time and the result is Vgs will slowly decrease to an in operable point. If the switching frequency is to high, the boot-strap capacitor never fully charges up or takes too long to charge. Often the high-side gate drive datasheet will provide information on selecting the boot-strap capacitor based on your switching frequency. Best wishes on your design. -Dr. K

      Gate drive require high current for a moment ,(say 500 mA), due to Cgs. If we use bootstrap, does bootstrap capacitor can deliver such a high current?

    1.the totem pole use Mosfet how it work I know use the BJT the current could be larger but the mosfet can do the same thing?
    2.what's benefit BJT connect the mosfet is the loss can reduced?

      Yes, you can use MOSFET technology in a totem configuration. Often integrated drive circuits use MOSFETs or a combination of MOSFETs and BJTs. If you build your own drive circuit using discrete devices, I would recommend BJTs. Yes, the losses are a concern for the totem circuit, but usually are small compared to the power switch.       @@rj8528 It depends on what you are using the totem circuit topology for. Is this for a push-pull voltage follower amplifier? If so, the n-channel MOSFET is on top and the p-channel is on the bottom of the totem. If you are using MOSFETS in a totem configuration as a gate driver, then I strongly suggest you implement using an integrated circuit and do not try to build a discrete driver circuit. Here's an example of a gate driver IC that uses a MOSFET totem circuit topology www.analog.com/media/en/technical-documentation/data-sheets/44411fa.pdf. You can see on page 8, that N1 and P1 make up the main drive circuit. Best wishes. -Dr. K

      Hi Anjo, the base resistor is calculated in a similar manner to calculating a current limiting resistor for an LED. The base-emitter is a pn junction in a BJT and behaves like a diode. Use the data sheets to determine the collector-emitter saturation current and the minimum value of beta for the device. Use these values to compute the minimum value of base current required for saturation, so I_base = Ice_sat/beta. Assume a 0.65V for the base-emitter junction and let Vs equal your control voltage applied to the totem-circuit. Rb = (Vs-0.65)/I_base. You can use the next standard resistor size smaller than your calculation. Hope this helps. -Dr. K

      Hi Gonzalo, that's not an easy answer as it depends. The power consumption will primarily be switching-based and very dependent on the IC gate driver you select. If you are using a gate driver IC, then I would look at the data sheets. Best wishes on your design. -RWK

    You’re competing with your music in beginning, tone it down a bit. The audio also cuts in and out when you’re going over some of the logic and data sheets.

      Hi James, profanity is not allowed in the replies. I know the audio is poor. I've kept it up because there is still some value to the content (even with poor audio). These videos were done for course I was teaching during the initial pandemic closures in March 2020 and was publishing this at a very quick pace. This was one I meant to re-edit with improved audio.
