    I had my SSG 82 for over 20 years, great rifle!!! But it does have two weak points. First and foremost, that puny extractor. Not made to extract steel cased ammo. It will break never to be heard from again Many years ago a company called SSk industries replaced my extractor with an indestructible one. Zero problems from then onward. Will shoot anything I feed it accurately. The trigger blade terrible, mine broke in half. Replaced it with a custom bass one. Many blissful range secessions ever since

      Thanks for the info. I’ve heard of SSK. I read a forum post from someone who said that Larry Vickers had machined his bolt and installed an AR-15 extractor. It wouldn’t be very authentic but it would be cheap and easy to replace. I’ve got Hornady brass, bullets and loading dies now so hopefully I won’t have to mess with steel cased ammo anymore.
      I hear that there is an Anschutz trigger blade you can get to work. I haven’t had a chance to investigate further though.
      It’s nice to hear from another owner/shooter. I’m looking forward to taking the rifle out to the range again soon.

      @@SuburbanRifleman I bang metal targets out to 500 meters with this rifle. Happy to learn 5.45 is available with brass hulls… who knew!!! I’m sure you will cherish your example. Always was curious about the muzzle velocity of this thing. Do you know?? Still have the original extractor blade, spring and plunger. As you are no doubt aware , replacement parts are non existent. All the best!!

      @@45RayWP I do not know the muzzle velocity but I will make a note to find out. I’ll be doing some more shooting videos this spring/summer and I’ll make a point to shoot it over the chronograph when I do.

    Nice video bro. Easy on Gene Hackman.. he’s gotta be one of the only American actor that has never made a bad movie 😂. Seriously though , a section of cleaning rod chucked up in a drill with 600-800 grit sandpaper wrapped around a . 357 bore brush and carefully polish that chamber. Won’t remove enough material to worry about "altering” the gun for collectors value but might make it totally ok. I had a bolt action Zastava 7.62x39 that had the identical problem with steel cases ammo. A couple minutes work polishing the chamber and it extracted smooth as can be. Also works on sticky Mosins.

      Oh yeah, don't get me wrong; I love me some Gene Hackman flicks! "The Quick and the Dead" was a little silly but still solidly entertaining. Gene Hackman is a true professional of the type not easy to find anymore. I can't think of too many films in which he wasn't firing a gun and yet he's managed to avoid any on-set negligent discharges with tragic results. (I knew there was a reason I preferred "Crimson Tide" over "The Hunt for Red October"!)
      I might try using your technique for polishing the chamber. I had also considered coating a bore swab with a polishing compound, like Simichrome and doing the same thing. Some folks were suggesting a thin coat of Johnson's Paste Wax or Turtle Wax on the steel cases as well.
      I'm going to hold off for the time being until I can get some brass-cased ammo assembled and see how it does with that before I start polishing anything.
      BTW, that Zastava "mini-Mauser" in 7.62x39 is another rifle that used to give me a patriot boner. I take from your use of the word "had" that you sent yours down the road? How did you like it, other than the sticky chamber?

      @@SuburbanRifleman I too was super excited when I ordered and first received it. I quickly realized I should have spent a bit more and got a CZ 527. Tight/sticky chamber , super clunky , binding bolt , shitty trigger. Instant regret. It’s a push-feed and The internal box mag "lips” were sharp as hell and would often catch and bind the cartridges feeding from aforementioned magazine. Wouldn’t group worth a damn. Sold it and bought a cz 527 and have been happy as a clam at high tide. Actual controlled feed Mauser type also. Much better carbine.

      @SuburbanRifleman  2 года назад +1

      @@guaporeturns9472 well that settles that. If I should ever satisfy my hankering for a x39 bolt gun, I’ll go for the CZ. I remember my old Zastava “Mauser”, an M48a, was the clunkiest Mauser-type rifle I’ve ever owned. I managed to smooth it up a bit but it was never great.

      @@SuburbanRifleman Yeah I didn’t research mine very well.. was about 10-13 yrs ago if I remember correctly. As soon as I got it out of the box and saw the Savage 110-looking bolt head I was disappointed. The marketed it as a "mini-mauser” and I just assumed they meant 96-98 type Mauser. I was wrong. It even has a bolt that has a kinda false full length extractor that makes it look like a 98-96 at a glance from afar , like an ad on a gun selling website. Seems kinda underhanded to me. Maybe there is a reason for it but I can’t see it.

      I can’t say for sure as I haven’t tried it myself but someone in one of the discussion forums said it worked on their SSG-82. It definitely looks more robust than the original.

      @@SuburbanRifleman Thank you. I was going to see if the machine shop could turn out a CAD file for the extractor and may see about getting some made. Is there any guides you're aware of for how to actually adjust the trigger? I see quite a few screws in side of the trigger area.

      @@BuffRANGE unfortunately I haven’t been able to scare up much technical info at all regarding this rifle. There is a fellow in Germany by the name of Patrick Hoffmann who’s been compiling a shitload of data about the SSG-82. He has interviewed people who were involved in the SSG-82 project and has appeared in one German TV documentary about the history of Suhl and its gun industry. He’s getting close to publishing a book on the rifle.
      He’s got a website dedicated to the SSG-82. It’s pretty easy to find and has his email address. I’ve had some communications with him but be aware; he’s a bit slow to respond. He may have some German-language manuals but I don’t know how willing he will be to sharing those before his book is published. He’s a nice enough guy but he seemed to be playing his cards pretty close to his vest when I was communicating with him.
      If you make any headway on those extractors, I’d love to know about it!

      I’ve only had it out to the range once so far and it was quite windy that day. My two groups at 100 yards measured 1.125” and 1.5”. Not too bad but I’m sure the rifle can do better.

    Question: is your bolt very hard to cock??? Is there a solution ? Or is it just a flaw of the design?? Thank you

    • @SuburbanRifleman
      @SuburbanRifleman  Год назад

      I would describe the bolt as stiff but not very. The only time I’ve experienced it very hard to cock is when I’ve had a case stuck in the chamber. I’d suggest field stripping the bolt and giving a good cleaning. I put a light coat of high pressure grease on the various bearing surfaces and the cocking cam.
