Correct, but Egypt's new capital is funded by the UAE, IKN is fully funded by Indonesian tax payers, so far no investor is interested in investing this stupid and wasted jokowi ambition..
Instead of spending the $33 billion into flood mitigation of Jakarta, they did this how stupid. With the amount of money they could've turned Jakarta into the next Amsterdam and continue to inhabit there for hundreds more years.
Jakarta is a disaster waiting to happen. People kept comparing Jakarta with Amsterdam, but they forgot one thing, Island of Java is susceptible to Quake.
Im from the same Island Borneo, Malaysia. On our side we kinda hope Indonesia do able to make this project happen. it definitely can help both country to grow. Brunei aswell.
The thumbnail is Wonderful but I regret watching this video. Almost everything is outdated, even the narration is outdated. I follow the development of this city and now they decide to build new houses for the people including those who do not have legal documents. Building a new city is a logical way for a developing country. 30 billion is not an expensive number at all. Fixing Jakarta's problems in the same time will cost 10 times more.
they even had the audacity to say indonesia isn't a rich country, as if it isnt one of the richest countries in the world. but i guess it shows the disastrous state of the global economy, and this world bank, imf, wto model of development and trade, where a country has to try to sell itself to people that want to take out more than they put in (foreign investors), aka a world ran by greed is a world we are building, and also we hope it wont burn the planet simultaneously.
It's disappointing to see the Wall Street Journal's video on Nusantara presenting outdated footage and misleading information. Contrary to the claim that Nusantara threatens the rainforest, it is being built in an industrial forest area, which already poses a risk to the rainforest regardless of the new capital's construction. The development of Nusantara includes significant efforts toward sustainability and environmental protection. Accurate reporting is crucial for an informed discussion on this important project. Also the claim that Nusantara is being built "in the middle of nowhere" is inaccurate. Nusantara is strategically located near Balikpapan and Samarinda, both well-connected by toll roads, with plans to link these to Nusantara. These cities will support the new capital. While it's true that local communities face displacement issues, this is a recurring problem due to government incompetence. Instead of halting the project, we should focus on finding solutions to support local communities. Discussions on forums like Skyscrapercity offer more updated and credible information compared to major media outlets like the Wall Street Journal.
Don't expect too much, the bias on this kind of channel is quite obvious so missing information is quite normal. You can say that to most USA base news channel. It’s a first phase of construction folks, you gotta build the basic infrastructures before foreign investments will come in and the government is also giving priority to local investors otherwise Nusantara is owned by foreigners.

The main reason behind moving Indonesian capital from Jakarta to Nusantara is never because of Jakarta's sinking problem. While it's true that it's one of the reason, but it's not the key reason. The key reason is because economic development since our independence has always been only concentrated on Java island. So the moving of capital city will symbolize the moving from a Java-centrist development towards an Indonesian-centrist development. As a native Kalimantan, I really appreciate this move as it'll also bring more and more development to our neglected massive island (3rd largest in the world, as big as the country of Turkey).

Nusantara was a geographical name for a place that mostly comprised of most of Indonesia's territory today. The name was used by ancient kingdoms in Java island, including the Majapahit Empire which is the largest empire in Southeast Asia's history. The name was later adopted for the new capital city of Indonesia.3 Mar 2024
But there's also a case that the name 'Nusantara' did not originate from Java, but rather from East Kalimantan itself. Nusantara was the original name of Kutai before the area was named Kutai, which later developed into the Kutai Kertanegara Kingdom, established in the 14th century. This view was put forward by Samarinda historian Muhammad Sarip. He explained that the name 'Nusantara' itself is influenced by Sanskrit (a language from India). However, the word 'nusantara' has become a place name (toponym) for the area in eastern Kalimantan which was later named Kutai, namely before the Kutai Kertanegara Kingdom was established in 1300 AD and lasted for centuries after (compare with the existence of Majapahit 1293-1527 AD).

I live in jkt and let me tell you there’s a ton in this video that’s off base. For one, Prabowo has already said he will continue the plan full stop and was even elected with Jokowi’s son as his running mate. While it’s true that there’s rumors of the government leaving jkt to escape grass roots movements, the movements in question are Islamist conservative. They are a very destabilizing and have made concerted efforts to exert pressure which far outweighs their popularity. The election of Prabowo was actually a referendum on this movement since their candidate (Anies) far underperformed and got low single digit % votes from non Muslims.
Please pray for Indonesian people. We have to work hard to pay tax, everything become expensive, to make our government greedy ambition dream become true. 😢
no it doesn't you believe too much propaganda. Thats what they say about highways, oh they always hurt the poorest the most. Because the poorest don't want to go anywhere fast.
why do people continue to build a "great city" in the middle of no where, it never works. even if you build the greatest city, but there is no population, if there is no population base how do you grow from that? like they just expect the first wave of people will just move to a empty city without any supporting infustructure, where they get job? where to get food? if they are the first wave that means there is no existing job market, no existing food market, transportation. they should find a mid size city in a great spot and improve from that or build it next to a mid size city
@@esashaik1372 "Every city was built in the middle of nowhere ." Yes, every city was built in the middle of nowhere, but from the bottom up, not top down like IKN. Every city is usually initially built as a temporary personal settlement, then developed into a permanent settlement, then into a neighborhood, then into a municipality, then into a village, then into a city. Every city started small in an organic fashion, while IKN started big in a very very _very_ artificial fashion. Top down planning almost always fail. In the long run, organic systems are more robust and usually beats artificial ones.
Jokowi's ego project, when with the same amount of money we can develop more cities throughout Indonesia. The strangest thing about this project is that the EIA came out first, and the research was done later. And for your information, the authorities arbitrarily shifted the zero point of the capital that had been researched by McKinsey because they were influenced by the words of a shaman. The failure of this project is the best thing I can hope for.
The whole project is the worst example of a top-down planning. Failure is inherent in a top-down planning like this. At the core, IKN is an artificial city, not an organic one like Jakarta and virtually all cities in Indonesia. It has many things in common with Arab Saudi's The Line. The failure to understand what makes an organic system more robust than an artificial system is the biggest failure in mega projects like this.
Can someone please explain to me how it is environmentally friendly to build a huge city on top of thousands of hills, so that it's residents will pretty much depend on motorised means of transportation, levelling out some of those hill resulting in tons of fuel to be used for landscaping alone, deforesting vast areas and choosing a location which predestines air traffic as the sole method for the rest of the country to get there quickly. It's good that Indonesia starts to de-centralise with this project but stop the greenwashing please.
It’s better to expand your literacy and understanding before making inaccurate comments. Not all of Kalimantan is forested; it’s a stereotype when you don’t delve into the details. The island of Borneo is divided among three countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei Darussalam. Specifically, Indonesian Kalimantan has quite advanced and developing industrial areas, as well as rapidly growing cities. Our new capital city is situated between two major cities, Balikpapan and Samarinda. On the other hand, the forested areas are protected and will not be destroyed, as our capital city is built on industrial eucalyptus plantations, not natural forests.
Once again, our new capital city is designed with the concept of a 'green city,' and not all hills will be flattened, as hills are an integral part of our city’s design. Additionally, it's important to clarify that motor vehicles or subsidized vehicles will not be allowed to pass through the IKN capital city. This is in line with the city’s concept and the presidential regulation prohibiting subsidized vehicles starting from 2030 (or sooner).
@@zzeroemissions3364 Sweetie, why so pressed? You just have to look once at the satellite images to see: Those plantations are also full of palm trees and sometimes, construction did reach into natural forests as well. "Not all of Kalimantan is forested; it’s a stereotype when you don’t delve into the details. The island of Borneo is divided among three countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei Darussalam. Specifically, Indonesian Kalimantan has quite advanced and developing industrial areas, as well as rapidly growing cities." First of all, I know of the three countries on Borneo Island. Why do you think I wouldn't know that? Stop that foolishness. It's embarrassing. You've never met me. And would you bring that up anyway? Malaysia or Brunei Darussalam have literally nothing to do with this project, because it is the new Indonesian capital. That's right, Indonesian capital, not theirs. The hills and mountains of Kalimantan were in fact very much forested - until humans decided to cut or burn the natural forests down to make room for plantations or other economic projects. That's a fact. The decrease of natural forested areas on Kalimantan in the recent past are well documented, google it. Good bye. Live your life with your one-sided views :) "and not all hills will be flattened" oh and congratulations for repeating exactly what I said. If you know one thing about constructions, you'd know that moving around soil is an extremely energy consuming division of it. That's also one of the reason why battery-run vehicles aren't necessarily better for our environment as they are depended on components sourced from mining. If you want to have clean means of transportation in cities, you have to implement just three things: pedestrian friendly, cyclists friendly, very good network of public transport. It's actually a very easy recipe. But I doubt that the hills of Nusantara will be inviting to walk or cycle for a few km while communiting to work. But we will see about that.

And please understand that while there are indeed forested areas affected by the construction, these areas are primarily focused on the development of highways, main roads, and other access routes to IKN. Afterward, these areas will be reforested. Any development will have some environmental impact, but that does not mean this project is indifferent to the damage caused. In fact, it is a positive aspect, as the city's concept includes green spaces and reforestation programs mandated by the President. Moreover, any human-made development will inevitably have an impact. If we only look at Kalimantan without considering its own damaged areas due to development, it would be hypocritical. The reality is that human populations are growing, and land is becoming more expensive. Therefore, relocating the capital is the right step to balance the economy across our country with its hundreds of islands separated by oceans. Additionally, Kalimantan, specifically East Kalimantan, is the most suitable central location for the capital, as Java houses 60% of our population and is poorly integrated due to its location across islands. Furthermore, Java is dangerous as it is in the red zone of the Pacific Ring of Fire, making it unsuitable for future human habitation due to rising sea levels, active volcanoes, and declining land surface.

Indonesia is poor country prove me wrong

I feel that even without moving the capital, development would be fairly even. What is needed is not moving the capital but greater autonomy to local governments.

Otonomi yang ditambah juga berarti kesempatan buat pemprov pemkab dan pemkot untuk korup juga lebih besar, bayangkan ada berapa ratus pemerintahan daerah di Indonesia. Jakarta is overpopulated and overcrowded because people from other parts of Indonesia keep flocking there to get some of the economic crumbs. Why would they bother to do that? Because the economy in their hometown (especially in the rural areas) is not prospering.
For example, the farmers in the rural areas are being neglected with lots of imported commodities that decrease the market price. Those farmers then stopped teaching their offspring how to farm and push them to work in other fields.

They told me they had been to the very spot of where the catastrophe happened and that it used to be a beautiful place. It was heartbreaking to hear about the tea growing communities being impacted so badly. I hope you and your family are okay.

This kind of top-down planning always end up hurting the poorest.
no it doesn't you believe too much propaganda. Thats what they say about highways, oh they always hurt the poorest the most. Because the poorest don't want to go anywhere fast.

to be fair, no cares about the forest anyway,
if we care, that forest should still be a jungle, not a monoplant farm
I could not find any city plan (transit route/station,etc.) anywhere on the internet. Does anyone know if there is any drawing for the city plan?
why do people continue to build a "great city" in the middle of no where, it never works. even if you build the greatest city, but there is no population, if there is no population base how do you grow from that? like they just expect the first wave of people will just move to a empty city without any supporting infustructure, where they get job? where to get food? if they are the first wave that means there is no existing job market, no existing food market, transportation. they should find a mid size city in a great spot and improve from that or build it next to a mid size city

"Every city was built in the middle of nowhere ."
Yes, every city was built in the middle of nowhere, but from the bottom up, not top down like IKN.
Amazing Project, Smart City & Green Citi, So Beautyfull City😍

First of all, I know of the three countries on Borneo Island.
Good bye. Live your life with your one-sided views :)
"and not all hills will be flattened" oh and congratulations for repeating exactly what I said.
