    I absolutely love this walkthrough. I don't play games, but I love watching the gameplays on RUclips, for me they're like movies; it's relaxing to watch and I really loved this story! The atmosphere, the scenery, the soundtrack - awesome.

      You should watch Dark Picture Anthology games if you like movie games. Games like Man of Medan, Until Dawn, The Quarry, The Devil in Me, Little Hope, and there’s a few others by them. I forgot the names. They’re all movie type games. I absolutely love them

    Like the last two comment-ors, I love the fact that there's no annoying commentary in this walkthrough. Nothing puts me off more when seeking a little guidance, when you have to put up with someone constantly babbling throughout gameplay.
    This game, however, proves that there is no need for guns or fighting to make a game truly awesome! With a story that I've fallen completely in love with, I have no regrets in ever purchasing this in the first place! This has to be top of my list of favourite games recently played!!

      I agree with you. There are commentaries that are fun to listen to, while there are those that are annoying. A commentating gamer like the RadBrad is an example of someone whose commentary is so entertaining, and you can’t have a negative opinion about him, even if you generally despise commentary. PewDewPie is the type of commentating gamer who would put you off and make you not want to watch the the video. I agree with you on that.

      Completely agreed, unlike most games in the horror genre nowadays, this one proves that a true horror/mystery themed game doesn't exactly need true violence or weaponry to tell its story. Even the unfinished story shows utter symbolism of what truly occurs in a horror game in this day and age where when guns and weaponry are drawn... it truly never is over... even when a battle is won... the internal conflict will always fester within the mind. without violence... a truer story is drawn to the surface... the real story.

    ===MORALE OF THE STORY!!!=== + ===WARNING SPOILERS BELOW!!!===
    Please like this comment so all the confused viewers can see!
    So, after a few webpages of intense research, I found out what the entire morale of the story is. To be honest, its really interesting, anyway enough rambling! to the morale below!
    The story of "The Vanishing of Ethan Carter" is based off of a dream as we see in the end.... but for some of us (including me) who didn't fully understand; it wasn't any dream. It was a death dream. At the beginning of the story, your mission is to find Ethan, whilst at the end we see Ethan's big brother come in the room and say "There you are! You missed dinner again and mom and dad are pissed!" This causes the parents and friends to be very pissed off after searching for him all day when really he was in the "Secret Room". When the mother ends up accidentally spilling the oil from the lamp and starting the fire at the end of the game, this is what starts the true story. This is where Ethan's "Death Dream" takes place. When Ethan had opened up the Secret Room the one day he explained, it had a curse inside of it. That curse took place in Ethan's body therefore he had become the sleeper. Thus, he had horrid dreams (this will connect later in my comment) about his family being murdered by this "Sleeper".
    Whats happening is, Ethan goes to sleep after his mom started the fire because he felt neglected and didn't care if he died. In his Death dream, his parents and friends slowly start to be murdered, and we see that the Sleeper can only be awoken by suffering and death but really it feeds off of it. So, the family starts to sacrifice one/another to try and "wake" the sleeper up. Eventually it comes to the point where everyone is dead and Ethan is then found in the room of the burnt down house although hes actually dead.
    ==Connection time!==
    These gruesome details and dreams of Ethan are coming from his very creative imagination, therefore he ends up dreaming of the supernatural detective (that you play as) to save him. The reason why everyone ends up killing each other or themselves in Ethan's dreams is because of his feelings from his family. Ethan feels like a very neglected child and his brother is a bully therefore leading a lot of negative impact on his dreams causing them to be so dark. Some skits we can hear Ethan talking and his dad stating he does not have time to read his stories, or his brother talking shit on them. Therefore this is why Ethan never wakes up after his entire family and friends die in his dream, he wants to feel the suffering and pain and neglection he has felt (Except his grandpa) Every character died in a horrible way but his grandpa. He is the only one who died in peace because he felt the most connected with him and thus leaving the three "..." for when you clicked on his corpse. What Ethan did not see was that his parents and family truly loved and cared for him and that they did not know that they were hurting him. This is shown by the few suicides in the Death Dreams, and then the family trying to save him by putting out the fire in the end. So, im sorry if that was confusing still but here's the final conclusion with less detail of the story.
    1 - The sleeper is Ethan, it's him sleeping / dreaming from the toxic smoke from the fire at the end.
    2 - Ethan is an introverted child interested in reading and writing fantastical stories. His family don't support his creativity, they sigh when he shows them his stories, and they put them aside and tell him they will read them later. His stories are escapist fantasies.
    They DON'T murder each other, in reality. The whole game is a toxic fantasy constructed in Ethan's mind and through the stories he wrote. He felt his family hated him, he built up a fantasy whereby his family are acting this way because of an alien, outside force.
    At the end, his family are alive, trying to help put out the fire to save Ethan. They just were abusive and non-supportive to him, making Ethan seek out his escapist fantasies.
    3 - The man was Ethan's father, Dale, he killed himself to be free of 'The Sleeper' (Ethan's dream). He felt that this would stop 'feeding the sleeper', but your character, Paul Prospero, mentioned that it failed, the sleeper still feeds off the anger and agony. Again, the sleeper is Ethan, it's his unconscious self creating a dark world fueled by the abuse / lack of support / passive aggressiveness members of his family direct at him.
    4 - The character you play, Paul Prospero, is a fictional creation of Ethan's. The game is Ethan's dreamworld, reflecting the reality he lived in through his science fiction and fantasy writing. You never existed, only in Ethan's mind and stories. Ethan may or may not be alive, he is trapped in the burning building, falling into unconsciousness through the smoke. His family are trying to put out the flames.

      The game's opening scene does caption that there are no guides and the player is left to figure things out. The idea is novel, but I equate it to playing chess with a person who has never played chess before and they aren't given any guides or hints. What a nightmare of an experience. I quit this game after 30 minutes because of that and, after watching this video, I'm glad I quit. The story is great, though.

  • @TheSaneHatter

    After seeing so many of these scenes as ambient-noise backgrounds (I don't have a gaming console), it's fascinating to see how they were actually used in the game. Very complex, interesting gameplay. I also like seeing the obvious references, espcially to "Dear Esther" in the mine.

    Only your 'enemy' can REMIND you who or what your true enemy is, too often we can't distinguish our pseudo enemies from the real enemies - evil. Evil is a reflection of yourself down a wrong path that could mean a world of pain to you. It can be triggered easily by your pseudo enemies when you interact with them directly. But essentially it is only a reflection of yourself.
    It is not something that we can't avoid as earthlings and human beings, it springs out randomly on everyone anytime anywhere. Keep a distance from your pseudo enemies so that your evil reflections do not surface, knock them back when they have crossed the line, vice versa.

  • @Justmyhandle
    @Justmyhandle 9 лет назад +6

    Wow... Man, this is what the graphics in Elder Scrolls VI should be like when it finally comes out. Environments this photo-realistic are rare even among triple A big budget titles. Imagine exploring High Rock, Morrowind, Elsewhere, or even Aldmeris with this kind of scale and beauty. I do think however, that it's good not to make things too realistic. Otherwise, it would be difficult to process and keep up with everything all at once (I speak from experience). Games with interactivity on the current gen's level can take time to get used to, throwing out too much can prove counterproductive.

    • @taghazog
      @taghazog 9 лет назад +1

      +Keith Harris It uses Photogrammetry technology. While this provides very good graphics for one and only one situation, it limits drastically the possible gameplay and physics of the game.

    • @Justmyhandle
      @Justmyhandle 9 лет назад

      taghazog I see, thanks for the info. Is the technology of next-gen consoles getting close to a point where it can utilize similar graphic display without disrupting gameplay?

    • @taghazog
      @taghazog 9 лет назад +2

      +Keith Harris Well, PC will always be the first and maybe for a long time to get more and more photorealistic graphics with good physics and gameplay. Consoles are pretty limited by their hardware and will hardly get to this point one day.
      By the way, there is a human limit also to the graphics: Even if the technology in graphics become more and more complex, the artists are still human and will never be able to add enough details on the textures and physics of the objects to make a very realistic game.
      We will have to wait and see if some day, we will be able to mix photogrammetry concept with in-engine graphics.

    • @johnv1684
      @johnv1684 9 лет назад +2

      +taghazog Although you do make some valid points, my opinion is slightly different regarding the human limit. I have been involved with the visual fx industry for a good 4-5 years during a decade ago and I can tell you that given the proper training and tools, talented people can emulate reality flawlessly. The limit is really the available computing power and it always has been. But there is progress. Games these days can produce the same results in realtime with what was only possible to achieve pre-rendered 10 years ago. I have no doubt that moving forward, in 10-15 years time games will be equivalent to present day movie fx. Cloud computing will enable us to render in realtime anything we like to a level that is not currently possible. Imagine character animation where each muscle fiber moves and reacts as in the real world. Particle based textures and particle cloud objects. Chaotic algorithms applied to elements such as water, fire, smoke, wind etc. The list goes on and on.

    • @PytonPagom
      @PytonPagom 8 лет назад

      Well, then the only limit will be, how much effort devs. can put into theyr work ... means resources. One can re-draw the wholoe world but people have to make a living, a day has just 24 hours and some companyes seek just profit ... but im positive.

    Mush more compelling experience than the actual game. Restarted the game with the walkthrough after noticing that something was wrong - I hadn't seen any of the puzzle so far, but then it's juste about searching and searching and worrying you missed something. After getting stuck in the mine again I just gave up and went to this walkthrough. I don't like games where the gameplay relies on combing areas to search for details, and it's nothing but that :s

    How were you supposed to figure out the gate combination in the mine?

    • @Irraptured
      @Irraptured 5 лет назад +1

      3 year old comment but I'll reply in case anybody in the future needs help: You know the combination based on the patterns where the spirits you found in the mine are standing. Then for the last one, you just guess, process of elimination.

But what if actually it was a secret room that unleashed a cthulhu monster the made his family crazy turn on each other and become murderous in order to feed the monster but ethan and granpa worked together to find the monster's weakness and fight him bravely and then private I. has to come in and find out the truth about the supernatural monster?
