      Mate, I reckon your positive comments are spot on. Between the 'special people' writing above the heads of those of us who came here to learn & the spite mongers who knock people only because they are bored, -- It could wear away at great Teachers like this. Some may just give up. So its great when I read strong support for people like this who are giving their time & sharing the FREE gift of this inspiring music!

      Cheers for the Video! Apologies for chiming in, I would appreciate your thoughts. Have you heard the talk about - Rozardner Guitar Professionalism Reality (probably on Google)? It is a great exclusive guide for easy guitar learning system for adults minus the headache. Ive heard some amazing things about it and my buddy finally got excellent results with it.

      30+ years, every style? Wow. Then probably you noticed that some techniques were demonstrated and explained quite inaccurately - for instance "fan picking" or tremolo. And teaching certain techniques incorrectly is not something one should applaud. Don't get me wrong, many years have passed since this video, and this guy's new lessons are pretty decent, but this one definietly isn't. It's rather strange you can't see it with 30+ years experience to say the least.

    However, your guidance did really support and help me, finally I can do many flamenco tricks and thanks to you

    I start all my students with a capo on the 2nd fret. This always lowers the action. I still do this on really delicate fingerstyle stuff, it's so much easier.

    How do you do this without destroying your hand?

    • @allen_el_punyito
      @allen_el_punyito 9 лет назад +14

      Practicing slowly (and repetition) is key to not killing your hand. Rushing your practice will make things sloppy. Boring as hell, but going fast makes things sound bad in the end.

      Nylon.....and tap.
      I replace the steel stings guitar with nylon strings...works like a charm. Plus my guitar sounds totally sweet. Plus I don't have to use wide ass necks.
      Like the man say...take it easy.
      Im learning the harmonic minor scale...all of the chords, arpeggios, modes..ect
      Im already a bad ass shredder...but Just trying to learn this style of playing and music...but more in depth. I cant remember everything.
      Too many pick patterns..ect You just gatta pick out what you like. It gets easier as you go. it's never boring to me. Simply because I play different types of music.

      Marco The guitar kid if you're a newbie...down tune your guitar so the strings will be softer. Also search on the youtube for how to set up an accustic guitar (only 1/4 of a turn to release the neck.) Accustic guitar actions are usually on the way to high side out of the box. See if ur local music store have bridge saddle. They should only be a couple of dallars. I personally slot mine to drop the action.
      Chord structure or building ( arpeggios) are simply every other note.
      Most of the time the V chord gets substitute with the harmonic minor. That's why it's a maj.
      Learn the Phrygian dominant mode..it's just the 5th mode of the harmonic minor.
      Then most of it will start making sense to you.
      Hotel Ca....sultain of swing and many other Spanish songs/
      Eample..Hotel Ca ..its in B min but the V chord gets vamp...(substitute)
      I, V, vii, iv....
      the F#maj is the V chord.
      Bm, F#maj, A, Emin....G, D, Emin, F#maj
      For sultan of swing...in Dmin
      It's actually a common movement in latin music....Plus Mark plays using his fingers,,,not a pick.
      I, vii, vi, V......The A is the V chord
      Dm, C, Bb, A
      III, vii, vi, I......( vi, vii)
      F, C, Bb, Dm...Bb, C

    I've played guitar for decades, bored and stuck at times.... so and am glad to finally see hear and learn these much more complex, interesting, inspired rhythmic variations/tricks with the strum hand. It's as if 60% of the instrument is hobbled without these sounds. Thanks.

  • @LickNRiff
    @LickNRiff  12 лет назад

    I completely agree with you, and that's why the name of the video is "8 Tricks" and not "8 Techniques". I made this video to help guitar players get acquainted with techniques nobody bothers to teach them online, and how to adapt those techniques to create their own sound, that's all. I have never said that I'm a flamenco player. I'm a guitar teacher. You don't have to be condescending about it.

    Such a good video, i like the way you explain it clearly....don´t care about people that dislike you or talk about if it´s flamenco style or not. For me it´s really nice to try out these technics that way. And it definately helped me out to sound more "flamenco" So thanxx a lot for that!

    Hey man, thanks a lot for this little lesson. I can see how these tricks can make anything really have a Spanish flair. I just bought a spanish guitar while in Tijuana. It is hand made by a guy there, it's a Luis Sevillano. Don't know if u know who that is but is beautiful and this lesson will help me get going in playing spanish guitar. I have always wanted to learn but never had the right guitar. But know I do, so thanks man. I subscribed to your channel too.

    Been playing 40 years, multi-genre/guitar type...often would get "block" when trying to learn certain techniques "properly"...so, I would often (and still do) find a way (natural for me) to "mimic" many of the styles/techniques I was hearing...just got a classical guitar last winter, and here I am, again, generating my own (for me, I mean) ways of getting spanish/flamenco "vibes" from the guitar, and just loving it....thanx for this video, there is some great, just like you say, "tricks" here!! I will try some of these out...never mind the critical "purists"; what's the diff? A true "purist" can live with a) his form (eg. flamenco) maintaining it's cultural/musical form, while not freaking out, re ANY alteration from that form; he could appreciate Paco DeLucia on the one hand, and, say, the Gipsy Kings on the other, and not have an aneurism because the GK's DARED to mix Flamenco with salsa/pop....

      +Acylette Suppose you've long ago learned it but still under your comment mine can be useful to someone else in future. You're simply playing chord progression Bm to A to G to F#7 in B minor key - first time with lots of open strings and usual shapes and then you play it with A and G chords E-shaped with barre on 5 and 3 frets. The rhythmic pattern was partly explained and you could try to improvise with lots of different chord progressions in any key at all

    Hola soy español y toco la guitarra española, una cosa que creo que sabes y que tendrias que enseñar esque nadie toca con esa tecnica de pulgar el pulgar esta muy centrado en la cuerda 6 y 5, sobretodo tienes que decir como se hace bien el tremolo

    Don't want to be "someone knowing it better". Just allow to post an additional comment: The "open fan trick" beginning at 3:20 - the "Rasgueado" might be played more comfortable and easier (even for beginners) doing it the other way round:
    pinky - ring - middle - index. - It is a much more ergonomic rolling off the finger fan and the way the majority (not to say all) of the flamenco guitarists do it. - - - Greetings from Berlin/Ger

    Im not saying your wrong to play the rascuado (the 2nd one) as you do, it works fine but traditionally its done in reverse little finger, ring, middle then index, it just allows for more pow and therefore more punch wich is always nice!

  • @weehoops3
    @weehoops3 11 лет назад

    I studied flamenco for quite a few years when I was young. All these techniques are required basics, and your execution of it will improve over the years. However, you "CAN" do this on a steel string quite comfortably without nail damage. The tip of your nails should barely be touching the strings, especially for the rasgueado. It's really easy on a 24 7/8" (short scale) guitar. Antoine Dufour, Gareth Pearson, and John Butler all use the rasgueado technique on steel string acoustics.

    Hello!
    Very nice video and cool tricks. I would like to give a suggestion that is concerning the tremolo. You wouldn't have had the problem at 8:06 if you picked with the ring finger instead of the thumb. By doing that you play the first string with a finger that rests near it instead of the thumb that is up all the way and rests comfortably in the D or A strings. Thumb, ring, middle and index is the pattern, pmai!
    Nice playing!

    The triplet action you show is pretty standard on the ukulele. I use it all the time. (Is that a banjolele in the background?)
    A lot of peeps get stuck on technique instead of having fun and mastering their instrument in their way. I use banjo techniques on guitar too. They all work. Who knows, they may eventually give an individual and unique style.
    Nice tutorial. Subscribed.
    Thanks.
    Edit - I live in Spain. I see flamenco guitarists in the raw. They all have different approaches.

    How would you practice these strumming techniques? With a metronome? start real show and bring your time up? How must time would you spend on each strum say daily? I'm very interested in your strumming and fingerpicking both of which I know squat! Thanks for some great lessons!

      +Gary Campbell Yeah, for strumming start slowly in roughly the same manner that you plan to play quickly. Don't strum rigidly when you go slow; that won't help. I don't use a metronome, but you may want to. The same goes for fingerpicking as well; start slow and work your way up.

    The 'fan' is a rasguedo and should be done with the little finger first, then ring, then middle, then index and use the thumb to balance on the E string to start. Doing it the other way that you showed, while easier, won't allow you to get to a good speed and or/ a continuous roll (like the triplet, which is another type of rasguedo).

    Been playing guitar 53 years and you're the best teacher I've found on youtube. Everyone has all these tricks and such for speed picking and whatnot but without electric what do the have. I love fingerpicking. Been practicing classical and will continue. Gotta love Steve Howe, great composer and performer.

    And thank you for the time you have spent sharing your talents. I have just gone through this lesson, and had to express my gratitude. Mucho thanks (I should speak Spanish as I have a half Spanish niece!)

    Oh and in the tremolo flamenco tremolo is usually 4 plucks between the thumb but your right 2 is used. In classical 3 plucks are used (Fransico Tarrega recuedos alhambra) probaly misspelt
