Such a good video, i like the way you explain it clearly....don´t care about people that dislike you or talk about if it´s flamenco style or not. For me it´s really nice to try out these technics that way. And it definately helped me out to sound more "flamenco" So thanxx a lot for that!
to hell with all these wannabes giving you negative feedback. you are an awesome teacher/player! they're so jealous! i've been playing for 30 plus years every style of every kind and i think you really got it going on!
+kevin marconnette Mate, I reckon your positive comments are spot on. Between the 'special people' writing above the heads of those of us who came here to learn & the spite mongers who knock people only because they are bored, -- It could wear away at great Teachers like this. Some may just give up. So its great when I read strong support for people like this who are giving their time & sharing the FREE gift of this inspiring music!
Cheers for the Video! Apologies for chiming in, I would appreciate your thoughts. Have you heard the talk about - Rozardner Guitar Professionalism Reality (probably on Google)? It is a great exclusive guide for easy guitar learning system for adults minus the headache. Ive heard some amazing things about it and my buddy finally got excellent results with it.
30+ years, every style? Wow. Then probably you noticed that some techniques were demonstrated and explained quite inaccurately - for instance "fan picking" or tremolo. And teaching certain techniques incorrectly is not something one should applaud. Don't get me wrong, many years have passed since this video, and this guy's new lessons are pretty decent, but this one definietly isn't. It's rather strange you can't see it with 30+ years experience to say the least.
Practicing slowly (and repetition) is key to not killing your hand. Rushing your practice will make things sloppy. Boring as hell, but going fast makes things sound bad in the end.
Nylon.....and tap. I replace the steel stings guitar with nylon strings...works like a charm. Plus my guitar sounds totally sweet. Plus I don't have to use wide ass necks. Like the man say...take it easy. Im learning the harmonic minor scale...all of the chords, arpeggios, modes..ect Im already a bad ass shredder...but Just trying to learn this style of playing and music...but more in depth. I cant remember everything. Too many pick patterns..ect You just gatta pick out what you like. It gets easier as you go. it's never boring to me. Simply because I play different types of music.
Marco The guitar kid if you're a newbie...down tune your guitar so the strings will be softer. Also search on the youtube for how to set up an accustic guitar (only 1/4 of a turn to release the neck.) Accustic guitar actions are usually on the way to high side out of the box. See if ur local music store have bridge saddle. They should only be a couple of dallars. I personally slot mine to drop the action. Chord structure or building ( arpeggios) are simply every other note. Most of the time the V chord gets substitute with the harmonic minor. That's why it's a maj. Learn the Phrygian dominant mode..it's just the 5th mode of the harmonic minor. Then most of it will start making sense to you. Hotel Ca....sultain of swing and many other Spanish songs/ Eample..Hotel Ca ..its in B min but the V chord gets vamp...(substitute) I, V, vii, iv.... the F#maj is the V chord. Bm, F#maj, A, Emin....G, D, Emin, F#maj For sultan of swing...in Dmin It's actually a common movement in latin music....Plus Mark plays using his fingers,,,not a pick. I, vii, vi, V......The A is the V chord Dm, C, Bb, A III, vii, vi, I......( vi, vii) F, C, Bb, Dm...Bb, C
I start all my students with a capo on the 2nd fret. This always lowers the action. I still do this on really delicate fingerstyle stuff, it's so much easier.
Hey man, thanks a lot for this little lesson. I can see how these tricks can make anything really have a Spanish flair. I just bought a spanish guitar while in Tijuana. It is hand made by a guy there, it's a Luis Sevillano. Don't know if u know who that is but is beautiful and this lesson will help me get going in playing spanish guitar. I have always wanted to learn but never had the right guitar. But know I do, so thanks man. I subscribed to your channel too.
Hi, im spanish and I play "flamenco" guitar, the way we play the base is not this technique, no use of (pulgar). The tremolo isn't this way either is always p-i-m-a-i Hola soy español y toco la guitarra española, una cosa que creo que sabes y que tendrias que enseñar esque nadie toca con esa tecnica de pulgar el pulgar esta muy centrado en la cuerda 6 y 5, sobretodo tienes que decir como se hace bien el tremolo
I completely agree with you, and that's why the name of the video is "8 Tricks" and not "8 Techniques". I made this video to help guitar players get acquainted with techniques nobody bothers to teach them online, and how to adapt those techniques to create their own sound, that's all. I have never said that I'm a flamenco player. I'm a guitar teacher. You don't have to be condescending about it.
+Acylette Suppose you've long ago learned it but still under your comment mine can be useful to someone else in future. You're simply playing chord progression Bm to A to G to F#7 in B minor key - first time with lots of open strings and usual shapes and then you play it with A and G chords E-shaped with barre on 5 and 3 frets. The rhythmic pattern was partly explained and you could try to improvise with lots of different chord progressions in any key at all
Un poco de uña en la mano derecha vendría muy bien para el flamenco. Todo fluye mejor. Resulta difícil hacer el trémolo con la yema de los dedos. Gracias por compartir!
My guess, Hell. Might be somekind of evil computer possession. Yeah, that's what it definitely is the fire from hell. Best to move on and pray for salvation. It's either that or his Guitar playing is Red Hot? I'm sticking with Satan for now.
@junetsuabunai You should spread the thumb away from the rest of the fingers, 90 degree angle from the palm. That should make it easier on the double-downstroke.
Just want to say that I am a ukulele player always looking for new techniques to add to my repertoire, and I have tried all of the 8 techniques in this lesson and they are all brilliant fun and sound great on a uke, so a massive thank you to you for this video!
I have been studying really hard here and hoping that you never remove these videos as I need to really work with them a lot. Please don't remove these if you don't have to o.k. I also want to remember to let you know that you are a great teacher and really appreciated & I thank you.!!!
Lick n Riff has done so much for my playing AND its FREE.....in my books this guy is awesome..... Cant give enough praise to someone who shares their skills. I subscribed after learning your autumn leaves lesson. So much to learn and not enough time bro.....Thank you thank you thank you!!
If it sounds good, it is good, ignore the "form" idiots that never really break the rules. because even the worlds greats break the rules, and admit it.
Hey, thanks! Most of those online lessons don't go further than learning chords and playing silly pop songs. I just stumbled on your videos and I think theyre exactly what I was looking for!
i like very much, very happi to learn from you, i tend to mess around and use some of your ideas already, but you are more formulated than i,pleasure to watch and learn from you, happi new year 2015 ok! cheers from nick miles in south yorkshire , england
Nice tricks great tutorial im from the Netherlands. And just subscribed to you channel i love to learn new things. And i have the feeling your channel can teach them to me.
Been playing 40 years, multi-genre/guitar type...often would get "block" when trying to learn certain techniques "properly"...so, I would often (and still do) find a way (natural for me) to "mimic" many of the styles/techniques I was hearing...just got a classical guitar last winter, and here I am, again, generating my own (for me, I mean) ways of getting spanish/flamenco "vibes" from the guitar, and just loving it....thanx for this video, there is some great, just like you say, "tricks" here!! I will try some of these out...never mind the critical "purists"; what's the diff? A true "purist" can live with a) his form (eg. flamenco) maintaining it's cultural/musical form, while not freaking out, re ANY alteration from that form; he could appreciate Paco DeLucia on the one hand, and, say, the Gipsy Kings on the other, and not have an aneurism because the GK's DARED to mix Flamenco with salsa/pop....
Thanks LickNRiff, Very useful info, excellent presentation. Maybe this question has been answered, but what model Takamine guitar? Is it electric model, and if so is it plugged in to amp or miked with your voice? Thanks
Greetings. A few days ago I started watching your channel and videos. For American rhythms and music it is perfect to learn. But, this video especially, is not correct in only the 1st rhythm, called in Spain: "Ventilador" (Fan). It is almost what it should be. The others are NOT correct at all. I am from Puerto Rico, and I am fond of the Flamenco rhythm. I think you should try to watch Videos of Spanish musicians who teach Flamenco Rumba, so that you add something more to the classes. I am interested in learning Blues and Country rhythms. I think I'll buy your course, if I can get the $. I'm sorry for the loss of your 2 dogs, they were beautiful. I am a Pet lover too. Greetings and the best of successes. 😊👍🏻. 🇵🇷
Deberías de tener mas respeto hacia la guitarra flamenca, no tienes ni idea..., ¿cómo tienes la intención de enseñar a la gente aunque sea gratis, si no tienes ni idea compañero? pero si no sabes ni rasguear!!!
Far out mate, this is awesome. I'm loving the 3rd example. I have never seen that one before. Sound awesome. Well you have just one a fan. Hit Subscribe bitches. :)
everything is great, I learned a lot, but it should be noted that the classical tremolo is played with 3 fingers (a-m-i-a-m-i-...), just to avoid confusion.
Nice video. dont know whats with this arrogance in flamenco music. you don't see this behaviour in other genres like Metal, blues, jazz, pop or classical for that matter etc.. Flamenco is just like any other music, and in no way is it superior. Just like all genres it borrowed alot of ideas from other music.
Brilliant!! Ive just sub'd. Can i ask if you could teach us the spanish caravan the doors did. Robby krieger on guitar. Thank you so much. I will share this video.
Good Tutorial however Steel string guitar will never have a mellow flamencous sound like a Classical Guitar on which these techniques teleport you to Spain directly, steel strings are too damn loud and you can't hear the mellow nuances like Nylon Strings. Also Good luck visiting finger chop city using these techniques on steel strings.
Yeah it's 2021. I started to learn flamenco on a steel string...destroyed my nails and skin. Got some good caluses though. Your nails must be of steel. Great video!
after years of playing, flamecno is still a secret to me.., but still im very orientated on all levels, ..i like your way of teaching and playing , weldone!, thank you for reminders and new stuff, new approaches! im getting a drink, indeed you talk to much :)
Is there any chance that you could make a video on how to play Layenda? It’s a classical piece, but it includes a few of these picking patterns. Thanks for All your time, and videos! Salude
hey brother!! thank you very much !! thanks to you tube.i m a pro in singing but very new to a guitar .now a person in india thousand miles away from you can even learn how to play a guitar....thank you very much ....you are an awesome guitar player and person as well...god bless you ...thanks!!
If I tried what you say on your "strums" with my nails I would have to be taken to the emergency ward trying this on a steel string guitar. No one would have any nails left since the steel strings file them off rather rapidly and then there would be the bleeding!. To play Flamenco there is only hard work and no tricks. It hurts even watching this. No this won't be "Dandy" as you say. Vaya con Dios
Hello! Very nice video and cool tricks. I would like to give a suggestion that is concerning the tremolo. You wouldn't have had the problem at 8:06 if you picked with the ring finger instead of the thumb. By doing that you play the first string with a finger that rests near it instead of the thumb that is up all the way and rests comfortably in the D or A strings. Thumb, ring, middle and index is the pattern, pmai! Nice playing!
There are fundamentalists everywhere even in the world of music : Your videos are all excellent, this one and all the others. TY I'M CHARLIE , and sure "You are Charlie" also. A French Fan
Sorry Bro! Bad technique on almost all tips but 2. It will be hard for anyone learning these to unlearn them at a later date and acquire the right techniques for flamenco and speed. I suggest researching the right techniques and starting with a good quality foundation to build on. Unlearning bad playing habits are tough! I might suggest Adam Del Monte as a great reference.
The clamping trick looks complicated: the exact same effect is accomplished by using the tip of your fingernails like a slide. Actually, that's exactly what's going on. I've seen flamenco guitarists do this and some badass blues guitarists do it.. And I stole the trick too :) Nice job on the other techniques. You cover basically all of them.
it depends on what type of music you're looking to play, Personally i like steel string because you can get that rock n roll sound as well as classical with a nice sound to it. If you try to play something thats not very classical on steel string it wont sound that great. thats just my opinion though.
maybe It´s not Flamenco & it´s not a spanish guitar, but it´s cool. Before someone took a stamp and said: "this is flamenco" all the guitar-players startet with doing things like that. If it sounds good, it will stay, if not - not. At the end it became a special music. so what... it´s cool.
This is a lot of work, I didn't realize that it was already so late. I really have llearned a lot here. You do talk a lot and that is good & a compliment to you also, a good teacher has to talk or what good would it be. I talk a lot too if you notice the notes I send to you and that means and shows that you got my attention. You didn't bore me. Pretty good for you. ..I am alone here, and maybe I am teachers pet.. ha ha ha & I am having fun too and my fingers are hurting again.!!! I have learned so much from you, and feel so proud of myself. Can you ;teach me how to play 'Seasons in the sun'/// oh yeah I have to check your things as it might be here too..O.k. I will and if it isn't here, you will be in big trouble..l.o.l.
If you want to learn flamenco, I would suggest that you go somewhere else. If you want to play that kind of music, you should learn how to clap the rhythms, grow your nails and get a nylon string guitar.
Reminds me of some things jake shimabukuro showed on the Ukelele. I dont play uke and I have no idea if it is correct but it is dang cool and I learned some of it. Thanks for this video!
Such a good video, i like the way you explain it clearly....don´t care about people that dislike you or talk about if it´s flamenco style or not. For me it´s really nice to try out these technics that way. And it definately helped me out to sound more "flamenco" So thanxx a lot for that!

Good job mate. Really useful to have all these techniques compiled into one lesson, and your skills only make me want to practice them more!
The fan can be done backward... He's doing it like Ben woods but you can begin by the pinky
It usually starts with the pinky

everything is great, I learned a lot, but it should be noted that the classical tremolo is played with 3 fingers (a-m-i-a-m-i-...), just to avoid confusion.
Why not just use a,m,i, tremolo instead of jumping like crazy with a thumb? You can then learn quintuplet tremolos with p,I,a,m i,

Is there any chance that you could make a video on how to play Layenda? It’s a classical piece, but it includes a few of these picking patterns. Thanks for All your time, and videos! Salude

And I stole the trick too :)
Nice job on the other techniques. You cover basically all of them.
This is osam .. thank you and u made all this very easy....😇🙏 India
your face expressions.... priceless
God I loooooove spanish flamenco music guitar It's like in my DNA and I'm not spanish
hi.. can please prepare lesson for De fuego - Mother tree (original) link is pasted How to play Flamenco Guitar (Rumba)..
it depends on what type of music you're looking to play, Personally i like steel string because you can get that rock n roll sound as well as classical with a nice sound to it.
My best guitar teacher, if you knew how many times your lessons socially helped me. Thank you, sensei
Reminds me of some things jake shimabukuro showed on the Ukelele. I dont play uke and I have no idea if it is correct but it is dang cool and I learned some of it. Thanks for this video!
