to hell with all these wannabes giving you negative feedback. you are an awesome teacher/player! they're so jealous! i've been playing for 30 plus years every style of every kind and i think you really got it going on!
+kevin marconnette Mate, I reckon your positive comments are spot on. Between the 'special people' writing above the heads of those of us who came here to learn & the spite mongers who knock people only because they are bored, -- It could wear away at great Teachers like this. Some may just give up. So its great when I read strong support for people like this who are giving their time & sharing the FREE gift of this inspiring music!
Cheers for the Video! Apologies for chiming in, I would appreciate your thoughts. Have you heard the talk about - Rozardner Guitar Professionalism Reality (probably on Google)? It is a great exclusive guide for easy guitar learning system for adults minus the headache. Ive heard some amazing things about it and my buddy finally got excellent results with it.
30+ years, every style? Wow. Then probably you noticed that some techniques were demonstrated and explained quite inaccurately - for instance "fan picking" or tremolo. And teaching certain techniques incorrectly is not something one should applaud. Don't get me wrong, many years have passed since this video, and this guy's new lessons are pretty decent, but this one definietly isn't. It's rather strange you can't see it with 30+ years experience to say the least.
Just want to say that I am a ukulele player always looking for new techniques to add to my repertoire, and I have tried all of the 8 techniques in this lesson and they are all brilliant fun and sound great on a uke, so a massive thank you to you for this video!
after years of playing, flamecno is still a secret to me.., but still im very orientated on all levels, ..i like your way of teaching and playing , weldone!, thank you for reminders and new stuff, new approaches! im getting a drink, indeed you talk to much :)
I have been studying really hard here and hoping that you never remove these videos as I need to really work with them a lot. Please don't remove these if you don't have to o.k. I also want to remember to let you know that you are a great teacher and really appreciated & I thank you.!!!
For more than 10 years I have tried doing some of the Flamenco techniques without success as my brain was programmed on the wrong method and I could not change my mistakes. However, your guidance did really support and help me, finally I can do many flamenco tricks and thanks to you
I start all my students with a capo on the 2nd fret. This always lowers the action. I still do this on really delicate fingerstyle stuff, it's so much easier.
Practicing slowly (and repetition) is key to not killing your hand. Rushing your practice will make things sloppy. Boring as hell, but going fast makes things sound bad in the end.
Nylon.....and tap. I replace the steel stings guitar with nylon strings...works like a charm. Plus my guitar sounds totally sweet. Plus I don't have to use wide ass necks. Like the man say...take it easy. Im learning the harmonic minor scale...all of the chords, arpeggios, modes..ect Im already a bad ass shredder...but Just trying to learn this style of playing and music...but more in depth. I cant remember everything. Too many pick patterns..ect You just gatta pick out what you like. It gets easier as you go. it's never boring to me. Simply because I play different types of music.
Marco The guitar kid if you're a newbie...down tune your guitar so the strings will be softer. Also search on the youtube for how to set up an accustic guitar (only 1/4 of a turn to release the neck.) Accustic guitar actions are usually on the way to high side out of the box. See if ur local music store have bridge saddle. They should only be a couple of dallars. I personally slot mine to drop the action. Marco The guitar kid Jimi Hendrix had his guitar on when he ate, slept and went to the bathroom. Toughen up. End of the fingers get thicker quickly.
I've played guitar for decades, bored and stuck at times.... so and am glad to finally see hear and learn these much more complex, interesting, inspired rhythmic variations/tricks with the strum hand. It's as if 60% of the instrument is hobbled without these sounds. Thanks.
I completely agree with you, and that's why the name of the video is "8 Tricks" and not "8 Techniques". I made this video to help guitar players get acquainted with techniques nobody bothers to teach them online, and how to adapt those techniques to create their own sound, that's all. I have never said that I'm a flamenco player. I'm a guitar teacher. You don't have to be condescending about it.
Such a good video, i like the way you explain it clearly....don´t care about people that dislike you or talk about if it´s flamenco style or not. For me it´s really nice to try out these technics that way. And it definately helped me out to sound more "flamenco" So thanxx a lot for that!
Hey man, thanks a lot for this little lesson. I can see how these tricks can make anything really have a Spanish flair. I just bought a spanish guitar while in Tijuana. It is hand made by a guy there, it's a Luis Sevillano. Don't know if u know who that is but is beautiful and this lesson will help me get going in playing spanish guitar. I have always wanted to learn but never had the right guitar. But know I do, so thanks man. I subscribed to your channel too.
ich bin eine dutchman, und can't live wit out spanish music, and learning to play and it has been easier and more fun than i expected, i am happy with all the spanish sounds and techniques that i can learn and will be a student of it for ever
Really really good lesson man. Loads of tutorials on youtube are terrible, this was perfect. Not only do you play well, but you explan it very well too. Can't wait to try this out, thanks brother.
I really enjoy your lessons on technical skills and the like. It is refreshing to get more than just song tutorials. Every time I'm in a rut, learning the underlying tricks of different styles pulls me back out of the swamp of boredom.
watever the haters will say.. they cannot deny the fact that this is an awesome video... with so much of stuff to learn from a 15 minutes video.. I am grateful that I came across this video..I suscribed!
I like your videos and your passion for teaching. See some guys here asking how to play the fan. They feel more natural to begin with the last finger. It is simply the right way. Technique is called rasgueado and it goes from the 5th to the 2nd finger
This is the one of the Most Useful and Inclusive videos I've ever seen! In one sitting you are showing the keys to playing the Flamenco Style. This gives me weeks worth of technique to master. Fantastic guitar lesson!!!
Lick n Riff has done so much for my playing AND its FREE.....in my books this guy is awesome..... Cant give enough praise to someone who shares their skills. I subscribed after learning your autumn leaves lesson. So much to learn and not enough time bro.....Thank you thank you thank you!!
Hey, thanks! Most of those online lessons don't go further than learning chords and playing silly pop songs. I just stumbled on your videos and I think theyre exactly what I was looking for!
I’ve been following your channel for years, Somehow I missed this gem. This morning I was working with your latest video “We Don’t Talk About Bruno”. I I’m so thankful for all the guitar instructor RUclips contributors and dude YOU are one of the most unique (and probably underrated/under viewed) out there! Thanks for all the inspiration!
I HAVE SEEN A LOT OF VIODEO LESSON.....NO ARGUE TO ME YOUR THE MOST INSPIRING TO FOLLOW...I WISH TO MEET YOU AND LEARN MORE IN PERSON....SALAMAT MARAMI...IN PILIPINO WORDS.

Been playing 40 years, multi-genre/guitar type...often would get "block" when trying to learn certain techniques "properly"...so, I would often (and still do) find a way (natural for me) to "mimic" many of the styles/techniques I was hearing...just got a classical guitar last winter, and here I am, again, generating my own (for me, I mean) ways of getting spanish/flamenco "vibes" from the guitar, and just loving it....thanx for this video, there is some great, just like you say, "tricks" here!! I will try some of these out...never mind the critical "purists"; what's the diff? A true "purist" can live with a) his form (eg. flamenco) maintaining it's cultural/musical form, while not freaking out, re ANY alteration from that form; he could appreciate Paco DeLucia on the one hand, and, say, the Gipsy Kings on the other, and not have an aneurism because the GK's DARED to mix Flamenco with salsa/pop....
Classical style uses three fingers and the thumb for tremulo. Hard to learn but awesome sound. Never tried with just two. Love your vids, man. What you are doing is great.
you are a joy to watch, please ignore all the knob heads who criticise you and keep on keeping on, oh one minor criticism though, can we have more of your dogs on the sofa
hey brother!! thank you very much !! thanks to you tube.i m a pro in singing but very new to a guitar .now a person in india thousand miles away from you can even learn how to play a guitar....thank you very much ....you are an awesome guitar player and person as well...god bless you ...thanks!!
+Acylette Suppose you've long ago learned it but still under your comment mine can be useful to someone else in future. You're simply playing chord progression Bm to A to G to F#7 in B minor key - first time with lots of open strings and usual shapes and then you play it with A and G chords E-shaped with barre on 5 and 3 frets. The rhythmic pattern was partly explained and you could try to improvise with lots of different chord progressions in any key at all
great lesson..love Spanish guitar, at 50 its too late for me to master Spanish style but to be able to incorporate these tricks ans spice things up is fantastic, going to pick up a classical guitar and fart around on it with your lessons, thanks
one day....with your help m8...i hope to be half as good as you...i love the spanish guitar style....paco de lucio is one of my favourites.....carry on doing what your doing for us much appreciated......thanks
Hi, im spanish and I play "flamenco" guitar, the way we play the base is not this technique, no use of (pulgar). The tremolo isn't this way either is always p-i-m-a-i Hola soy español y toco la guitarra española, una cosa que creo que sabes y que tendrias que enseñar esque nadie toca con esa tecnica de pulgar el pulgar esta muy centrado en la cuerda 6 y 5, sobretodo tienes que decir como se hace bien el tremolo
Thanks a lot for these tricks! I've been looking for a way to import flamenco techniques into my steel string guitar playing. So special thanks for showing these tricks on the steel string guitar.
Un poco de uña en la mano derecha vendría muy bien para el flamenco. Todo fluye mejor. Resulta difícil hacer el trémolo con la yema de los dedos. Gracias por compartir!
Don't want to be "someone knowing it better". Just allow to post an additional comment: The "open fan trick" beginning at 3:20 - the "Rasgueado" might be played more comfortable and easier (even for beginners) doing it the other way round: pinky - ring - middle - index. - It is a much more ergonomic rolling off the finger fan and the way the majority (not to say all) of the flamenco guitarists do it. - - - Greetings from Berlin/Ger
Always a pleasure to hear from licknrif. I like this guy; bbq beer and happy dogs, easy to get git lessons. He would be welcome in my home. I still can lean a lot. I have spent good time with this lad great attitude
Im not saying your wrong to play the rascuado (the 2nd one) as you do, it works fine but traditionally its done in reverse little finger, ring, middle then index, it just allows for more pow and therefore more punch wich is always nice!
I studied flamenco for quite a few years when I was young. All these techniques are required basics, and your execution of it will improve over the years. However, you "CAN" do this on a steel string quite comfortably without nail damage. The tip of your nails should barely be touching the strings, especially for the rasgueado. It's really easy on a 24 7/8" (short scale) guitar. Antoine Dufour, Gareth Pearson, and John Butler all use the rasgueado technique on steel string acoustics.
I enjoy just playing guitar, bt I suffered nerve damage in my left hand. Adding some quality picking patters to bag of tricks really to give a broader sound than what I am presently capable of, thank you very much.
I am thankful to our Lord l found your site. You are inspiring me to play again. God bless you and l pray he keeps blessing your amazing talent. Thank u so much.
Hello! Very nice video and cool tricks. I would like to give a suggestion that is concerning the tremolo. You wouldn't have had the problem at 8:06 if you picked with the ring finger instead of the thumb. By doing that you play the first string with a finger that rests near it instead of the thumb that is up all the way and rests comfortably in the D or A strings. Thumb, ring, middle and index is the pattern, pmai! Nice playing!
There are fundamentalists everywhere even in the world of music : Your videos are all excellent, this one and all the others. TY I'M CHARLIE , and sure "You are Charlie" also. A French Fan
The triplet action you show is pretty standard on the ukulele. I use it all the time. (Is that a banjolele in the background?) A lot of peeps get stuck on technique instead of having fun and mastering their instrument in their way. I use banjo techniques on guitar too. They all work. Who knows, they may eventually give an individual and unique style. Nice tutorial. Subscribed. Thanks. Edit - I live in Spain. I see flamenco guitarists in the raw. They all have different approaches.
How would you practice these strumming techniques? With a metronome? start real show and bring your time up? How must time would you spend on each strum say daily? I'm very interested in your strumming and fingerpicking both of which I know squat! Thanks for some great lessons!
+Gary Campbell Yeah, for strumming start slowly in roughly the same manner that you plan to play quickly. Don't strum rigidly when you go slow; that won't help. I don't use a metronome, but you may want to. The same goes for fingerpicking as well; start slow and work your way up.
The 'fan' is a rasguedo and should be done with the little finger first, then ring, then middle, then index and use the thumb to balance on the E string to start. Doing it the other way that you showed, while easier, won't allow you to get to a good speed and or/ a continuous roll (like the triplet, which is another type of rasguedo).
Been playing guitar 53 years and you're the best teacher I've found on youtube. Everyone has all these tricks and such for speed picking and whatnot but without electric what do the have. I love fingerpicking. Been practicing classical and will continue. Gotta love Steve Howe, great composer and performer.
And thank you for the time you have spent sharing your talents. I have just gone through this lesson, and had to express my gratitude. Mucho thanks (I should speak Spanish as I have a half Spanish niece!)
Oh and in the tremolo flamenco tremolo is usually 4 plucks between the thumb but your right 2 is used. In classical 3 plucks are used (Fransico Tarrega recuedos alhambra) probaly misspelt
to hell with all these wannabes giving you negative feedback. you are an awesome teacher/player! they're so jealous! i've been playing for 30 plus years every style of every kind and i think you really got it going on!

Don't want to be "someone knowing it better". Just allow to post an additional comment: The "open fan trick" beginning at 3:20 - the "Rasgueado" might be played more comfortable and easier (even for beginners) doing it the other way round:
pinky - ring - middle - index.

Nicely shown and explained. Thanks for the names to call the techniques also. Yay
This is a great way to introduce the beginner to Spanish Guiter!
Always Best of best lessons for many years.thank you
Im not saying your wrong to play the rascuado (the 2nd one) as you do, it works fine but traditionally its done in reverse little finger, ring, middle then index, it just allows for more pow and therefore more punch wich is always nice!
Amazing help man , thank you!
Hey, how are you and the weather there?
Thanks. You make this fun and I learn best when I'm having fun and not being made to feel thick headed.
really instructive mate! don't give a shit to the critical comments. This is really awesome!
Killing it! Was looking for some new ways to spice up my acoustic chops, thanks for the ideas!
Nice playing!
first thing...nylon strings
not new things for me to learn but some of them are really from the scratch..and learning alot from your lessons in a new way ...
Hey man, thx for this advices, really inspiring. Love it!
Thank you a lot for your generosity
Hey, how are you and the weather there?
This was very rich in experience and the lecture was outmost well done.
These videos are f*****g beautiful and thank you very much!
Im from Indonesia...thanks for the lesson...its very kind of you...thanks...GBU
Awesome video dude! It's going to take me a while to get the triplets down but it will be worth it! Thanks for sharing.
awesome!!! i've been looking for stuff like this for ages. thanks!
this video was hell of a lot useful and entertaining as well bro, like at 14:43 :) i will start immediately the triplet^^
There are fundamentalists everywhere even in the world of music : Your videos are all excellent, this one and all the others.

The triplet action you show is pretty standard on the ukulele. I use it all the time. (Is that a banjolele in the background?)
A lot of peeps get stuck on technique instead of having fun and mastering their instrument in their way. I use banjo techniques on guitar too. They all work. Who knows, they may eventually give an individual and unique style.
Nice tutorial. Subscribed.
Thanks.
Edit - I live in Spain. I see flamenco guitarists in the raw. They all have different approaches.
Best strummy lesson on the interweb! Thank you!
You the man LicknRiff, you the Maaaaaaaaaaan. No need to explain yourself to trolls.
This is good for someone that doesn't know anything about Flamenco!
Thank you so much for this awesome video! I'm new to flamenco guitar and this video has been very informative.
Amazing video by the way. Thanks so much !
Oh and in the tremolo flamenco tremolo is usually 4 plucks between the thumb but your right 2 is used. In classical 3 plucks are used (Fransico Tarrega recuedos alhambra) probaly misspelt
