Wonderful recipe ideas. Enjoy your Day Everyone ❤️✌️🌹
Thank you! You too!
Great video. So many wonderful ideas. Thank you as usual Dawn. Love from Debbie 🙋🧑🦽 and Dexter-Dog 🐕🐾 my sweet tiny rescued Chihuahua 🐕🐾 companion living a quiet crafty life 🏠🌵 in southern California. 💕🙋🧑🦽🐕🐾🏠🌵😎🙏
MY MICROWAVE AND I SEE EACH OTHER EVERY DAY, multiple times. * I have been very happy steaming veggies in the microwave (6 min. for large bowl of broccoli, use a glass bowl, 2 T water in the bottom of the bowl, cover with glass plate). 4 min. to cook one ear of corn on the cob still in the shuck. 4 min. to steam a nice sized piece of salmon (thick piece), less time for thinner salmon. Season with a very light sprinkle of Cavendar's Greek seasoning and some dry basil, put another plate onto of the plate holding the salmon, and microwave 3-4 min. - just thinking about that made me hungry). Microwaved potatoes- I am happy with this texture. * BEST FOR LAST: I learned how to make an egg omelet in the microwave from a male co-worker. 2min. 40 seconds of cook time. Whisk 2 eggs in a flatter type soup bowl, chop some onions, mushrooms, and grate one ounce of cheese, put on top of the whisked eggs in the bowl, cook. Ohhh la la. 2 heaping tablespoons of salsa are optional - try it, I think you will be very happy with the texture. I was and I am happy I took the chance. Extras can be added to change it up - diced ham, avocado, etc. It is a great meal, almost no effort, and you feel good after you eat it. Right now the total cost comes to $0.50 per omelet. Brain food on a budget.
I make something similar with grated carrot and shredded cabbage( white or purple) and a bit of garlic and green onion.
Okay, now I'm hungry! 😊
I will put potatoes in the microwave and wrap them in foil as soon as they come out. I like the flavor and texture. I steam or cook most of my vegetables in the microwave. I make most of my cakes from scratch. I still haven't made yeast rolls or bread. I use the excuse that I don't have enough time to learn and produce it. I'm going to the store tomorrow, so maybe I'll pick up some yeast, lol! You can tell that you enjoy nurturing your family by cooking for them. Great video! Love to all, Linda 💕
For homemade mashed potatoes we slice up the potatoes leaving the skin on
I like making my own jams. Also, cookie dough to freeze in tiny batches for later baking in toaster oven. Nothing like fresh-baked cookies for dessert!
Salad dressings and mayonnaise! People think it's so convenient to buy dressings that they don't make them at home. If you have a plunge blender, a quart of mayonnaise takes 1 lemon, a dash of white vinegar, two eggs, 1 spoon of dijon mustard, oil (don't use olive oil, it goes bitter) and salt. It's a 90-second recipe. Mayo at my local Walmart ranges from 12 to 30 cents per ounce. The homemade version is less than half that - and tastes much better. The same with salad dressing - simple pantry staple ingredients, a plunge blender, 1 to 2 minute recipes - even for Ranch or avocado-based dressings. They are pennies on the dollar compared to the supermarket stuff and there's no stale spices, weird unhealthy seed oils, or questionable preservatives. The organic mayonnaise and salad dressings that are more comparable to home made are 60 to 85 cents per ounce (highway robbery, IMHO). Get a $10 plunge blender and make these simple condiments at home. Better for your health and your wallet.
I'm going to try making homemade mayo. Thank you! 😊
The test will be if my husband likes it. 👍
That sounds good. I wonder if it would work in a conventional blender. Thanks.
@@oliviafox6745 I don't know - I've never tried it - it's always been a plunge blender or a granny mixer for me. Sure worth a shot, though!
I am going to try this
I like to make homemade cornbread muffins. They are easy to make and taste delicious. 😋
Yes they are!
Love this video! I've been making my coffee with a kerig for years. I bought the sieve so I can put my cheap coffee grounds into it. I had one break and my husband helped me fix it. I learned how to descale it. I buy the Walmart great value coffee cups occasionally they're pretty good although there's not a lot of Coffee grounds in them. My daughter and I are the only ones who drink it regularly so I didn't want to make a whole pot. When one broke completely I found a replacement at The Salvation Army that worked great. Then this Mother's Day my 20 yo son bought me a nescafe!!!! And he bought me a 30 pack of the cups because they're a $1.25 each. It comes with an automatic milk frother that does an amazing job. I'm overjoyed because the coffee's turned out better than Starbucks which I never buy anyway. I'm in love!❤
I've been making homemade Naan bread. I like flatbreads and wraps but they haven't been tasting so good from the store. If I'm in area that makes them fresh, then I will purchase.
I started what I call "advanced cooking" since I quit full time work 9 years ago. This year I'm focusing on jams and I'm loving the process!
Homemade jam is fantastic! What kinds do you make? We planned blueberry, raspberry, strawberries, grapes, and apples but it's going to be a few more years before I see the yields I need to make jelly on a regular basis. Instead I am making it from ground cherries. They taste like pineapple, are full or pectin and reseed themselves yearly. Bit of a pain to hull them out of the paper lanterns though.
@@christines2787 so far I made apricot jam bc we LOVE it especially the one with whole apricots in it. I'm planning to make strawberry jam bc my children like it and fig jam bc I really enjoy it.
@Saturn57 - Yum! Sounds wonderful. Last year I grew 3 figs. Hopefully we will get a few more of that.
Love that!
@@christines2787 I love figs in all its forms; fresh, dried, jam, and my favorite is fig bars, lol.
The only time I buy cookies is when the sale is too good to pass up or it's too hot to turn on the oven.❤
❤ing your videos lately - very helpful.
I'm so glad!
I agree with you, Dawn. I don't like initially cooking food in the microwave (yucky!). I use it to warm up already cooked foods.
... but my 30-year-old daughter is the queen of the microwave! She amazes me with what she can make in the micro! She comes over, loves my food, and recreates a canned and micro version at home! 😂 I think all her friends eat like this too because they all drive together for about 1 hour to get my cooking! 😊❤
That is incredible
When I make muffins, I put yogurt in them, and extra cinnamon, blueberries and cranberries. And walnuts on the top. Yum. Also I don't cook in my microwave.
Just re heat. Does not taste right! Thanks M.M.
When I find an extreme deal on fresh fruit, I buy in quantity and freeze it for yogurt and smoothies.
I make my own granola, muffins and tortillas; all so much cheaper and taste better too.😋
Sounds great!
I never make my own pasta, oat milk, or soy milk. Just more time-consuming than is worth it to me.
I used to make peanut brittle in the microwave ...so easy and a treat the whole family loves
That sounds interesting! I make candy for Christmas. How do you do that without a candy thermometer?
I make mayo. It takes about 5 minutes including about 30 seconds mixing with an immersion blender.
Your homemade yogurt is so good! Love homemade bread!!
Thank you so much 🤗 I agree
I only like reheating food in the microwave. Have a wonderful day!😋
We use our toaster oven & stove-top to reheat and cook everything now. Toaster ovens have all the functions available these days. We no longer own a microwave oven.
Dawn, you should see what fruit trees grow best in your area and plant 2 of them. Grow your own fruit. Fruit trees are the easiest to grow. It’s not gardening. Just plant it, water it at first and let it grow. We have pear, peach and apple trees on our property. SOOO much better tasting and all organic ! 😉
good to know
I am growing mulberries, papaya , banana and guava.
I make nearly all my food and coffee year round and do the shop, chop and cleanup. I bought 6 salad kits this week for $21. Seemed extravagant to me, but have been exhausted with job stress, long commute and multiple home repairs I'm tackling myself (saving ~$800 on labor) lately so it's time to enjoy a little ease to get through a very exhausting week or two.
Here's a recipe for oven roasted potatoes
Take potato,red,yellow,russet,etc.
Cut into even sized chunks or wedges.
Put in large bowl with lid.
Add one bottle oil based salad dressing, like Italian, Asian sesame, Mediterranean, balsamic vinegrett.
Season to taste.
Slap lid on and shake it to combine.
Dump onto a lined baking pan with lip.
Bake, middle rack,350 until tender, about an hour or so.
Delicious.and so easy
I am going to try this. Thanks much
I make oven roasted potatoes with Yukon gold potatoes cut into quarters or more pieces depending on size of potatoes. I put in bowl with half of a very thinly sliced onion and you can drizzle with olive oil but I use bacon fat that I save. Salt and pepper and bake at 400 degrees until potatoes are tender. I usually stir them around once or twice while cooking. Yummy!
I Luv this video, no microwave yuk, I love home made potatoes and I luv potatoes and onions, I bought some of those frozen blueberries you showed, they taste great.
Love. Love. this video
Thanks much
I rather make my own coffee, anything I get out side of my own always tastes burnt. Exception of one gas station, but don't stop to often there.
I made homemade pizza crust last night, and made my own pizza. It turned out pretty well, and I will probably do it again.
yum
I stay away from the microwave. I keep it unplugged on the counter for quick heats. Thats it.
Love mango and chilli powder pineapple and chilli powder is also very tasty ❤ I also microwave potatoes in an empty bread bag for mash very quick 4 for about 10 to 15 minutes
yum
Suddenly Salad knock offs are a winner here. 👏
The microwave is only used to reheat food, once in a while. I doubt we’ll ever replace it😊
In my house, a batch of cookies lasts two days. Maybe! My husband doesn't eat sweets, but my kids devour them like vultures. Nothing lasts long!
I hear you. You must be a good baker
@@CentsibleLivingWithMoneyMom They just love sweets!
We do not have a microwave in our house at all anymore
You are amazing Dawn, saving money and healthier options with the homemade food, it's a lot of work, planning, shopping, cooking and then the clean up. I make homemade ice tea with Bigelow cold brew hibiscus tea bags, add a splash of juice instead of sugar, cold brewed coffee, love cayenne pepper on mangos, very good on pineapple too. When I make the quick breads I use the mini loaves and it's the perfect size for 2 family household, also I freeze the extra waffles and pancakes. I do cheat and sometimes use jarred brown gravy, not as good as homemade, but it will do.
Sounds perfect
I don't really use the microwave. It primarily melts butter or heats frozen veggies. My kid still cooks in it which is a hold over from dorm life.
Your Mrs. Fields cookbook looks interesting. Ilp be checking that out. My go to is The Cookie Companion from King Arthur flour Company.
My daughter was very small, wasn't growing and weighed only 28lbs on her 5th birthday. If I could coax her to eat once a day it was a miracle. Her symptoms weren't common so it took the doctors some time to diagnose celiac disease. There was not much in the way of cereals, breads, cookies or cakes 18 years ago. I even had to create my own flour blends.
Although things are easy to find now, I still bake and cook everything from scratch. I didn't use much pre packaged food before, but since then, it's been zero. You get used to it and it's not the time killer it is in the beginning.
Daughter is now 22. She is perfectly healthy as long as she stays gluten free. We do wonder if her slow growth in the beginning is why she's only 4ft 10 .
I'm in agreement with you on the microwave food & instant potatoes. Yuk!
I understand
I make homemade bagels and english muffins, those 2 things I make a lot. I also make homemade barbeque sauce, and I jar it and put it in the fridge.
Yum
I make my own seasonings from scratch and keep enough made ahead of time. So I have chili seasoning, ranch and Italian 😀
Sounds great!
I make my pie crusts, cornbread, waffles, biscuits, cakes, muffins, cookies all from scratch.I make sausage, egg and cheese biscuits to keep in the freezer for my husband's breakfast. I make a half gallon of yogurt every two weeks. I make the type that you heat on the stovetop, put in a cooler for 3 hours, then chill overnight in the fridge. I don't strain it to get greek yogurt, but it thickens up nicely and is very smooth. I use very few seasoning mixes, mainly a store bought chili seasoning packet and a taco seasoning packet. It took me years to figure out that we were getting so much salt and preservatives in all the processed foods we were eating.
For taco meat seasoning I use garlic powder, onion powder, cumin, chili powder, black pepper and salt. These are spices I regularly use so I am not buying special spices to make it. I have never bought a package of taco seasoning and we have tacos every week.
@@penelopeprimrose90 Ooh, thanks! I'll give that a try!
Can you adopt me?
@@gssandlin I use Gebhardt chili powder. I have tried a few other brands we didn't care for. The chili powder makes a big difference so use one you like.
I have to make it easy on my hubs since he's had to do the cooking since last year; my RA is flaring since then. I ask for basic food. Pancakes, just add water. Rice and a can of tuna. Refried beans and microwave ready Spanish rice. This week will be squash and a protein, eggs or x-lean hamburger. It's his birthday so I added a Hershey's chocolate cake in Walmart home delivery order. Potatoes are cooked in the slow cooker. Used to get coffee out but prices kept going up. 6 years ago I bought an original Nespresso Delonghi Essenza Mini for $114..best thing I ever bought. We make all of our coffee at home. I can find Nespresso knock-off capsules for 23-30 cents each in a box of 50-100. Hub's drinks Americanos and I have espresso with one brown sugar and a splash of So Delicious Coconut milk. We love that machine.
Other things I buy packaged like Thanksgiving was ground turkey, cook, add stuffing mix following package directions and serve with whole cranberry sauce canned. We had it again last month. We try to make it as easy as possible since he's disabled too.
That makes sense
Besides what you mentioned, on the sometimes but often make list, jams, tortillas, rolls, pizza, pasta. On the always make list, sweet tea, plain iced tea, pie crust, muffins, salad dressing, vanilla extract, a knock off version of Nance's mustard, granola, tomato sauce, pesto. Always want to learn new things.
Great tip! Thank you
I would rather buy bread.
I agree. 👍
Thank You for the home made meals ideas . I would love a video of your waffles recipe because my son loves them . Take Care 👍💐🕊️
Will do!!
Thank You so much . Take Care💐🕊️🇨🇵❤️🇺🇲
I really love yr videos Dawn. I make popcorn from scratch and muffins from scratch. Which I love doing which saves me alot of money.
I do like buying potato chips from the store which I haven't looked into making from scratch...but would like to know how to do....😊😊😊
I would love to try your muffins

Good job. I don’t make to many things from scratch id rather clean than cook lol.i do make pasta sauce and freeze it for more meals.
Sounds great!
When reheating in microwave it’s important you keep a small bowl or cup of water especially with bread and muffins as it will draw the moisture from that and not the food. Also a damp paper towel over the item!
Great tip!
Hi Dawn and all,
I like to make my own apple cider vinegar (very easy and cheap to make from either apple skins or apple juice), I make my own buttermilk (also easy and cheap), salad dressing, bread crumbs, iced tea, bread and tools, pizza dough(and many, many doughs!), muffins, bagels, croutons, soups, cleaners, tea from dried herbs, tomato sauce, salsa etc.
I think the best thing to do is make it as simple as possible (ex. Make regular bread or a quick bread, and when you’re comfortable with that, then move on to sourdough-if you want)and build up your repertoire a little at a time. I’ve been at this for thirty years, and now I hardly buy any packaged/processed foods! It’s so much fun 😊and much healthier for us!!!
Sorry, bread and rolls 😂
@@9kiddos Thank you, great post: lots of good ideas there. By the way, you can edit your posts (but no need to apologize anyway).

freeze the whey and use it when you use breads or pizza crust. You get a nice rise!
Thanks for the tip!
Hi, Dawn, I even don’t have a microwave and I don’t like the taste of microwaved food, while my sister swears by it, BUT I love cooking from scratch and she never does.she prefers
…ready to eat -meals. Sorry, I was typing too fast. I almost never buy salads, for me it’s fun to mix and arrange colorful veggies. And I’ve no soup bags or cans, no broth… I cook broth from the skin of the veggies, so easy and tasty. Love baking, but as a diabetic I’ve to watch my carbs. Love, Monika❣
I bet you are a good cook
Oh my you make fancy coffee at home. Could ya do a video on your coffees. I'm a coffee lover and it's so hard not to spend the money on the yummy coffee drinks. I only let myself buy a couple a month but I truly cannot afford them cause it ends up coming out of my grocery envelope bad mistake lol. If you have an iced or hot recipe that would be fun. Thanks money mom
Yes I can
We make the same things you make. I also make homemade biscuits. I'm not a fan of the ones that come in the can. I also make salad dressing because I can make a quick batch with what I have on hand and switch up the different kinds. I feel like with a bottle of store bought salad dressing, it takes a while to use it up and we get tired of it. I also make my own spanish rice vs buying the packets of rice. I sometimes make my own spaghetti sauce, but mostly buy in the jar. One my list of things to try making next are mayo and tortillas!
I am on my way over
Homemade rather than buy? Too many to list.
Buy rather than homemade? I can make homemade cheese-its, but why would I spend that many hours to make 36 homemade cheese-its, when I could buy a whole family-sized box of them for just a few dollars? I also think that puff pastry is too much trouble to make, just buy it.
That makes sense
If you add cinnamon to banana bread it tastes so good.
I agree
If i cook , after servings are handed out, I date and free,e leftovers in serving size containers. Becomes someones quik lunch of quality food. And I avoid eating more to just finish it up....
Do you really save by the time you pay for your gas, electric, water, detergent and time? Just curious. And can yogurt be frozen?
Yes, I do for sure
Thank you so much Dawn. Thanks to you I got out my waffle maker , cuisinart griddle and of course I use my crockpot several times a week. I am making batches of waffles and freezing. I also made 4 lbs. of bacon (which I got on sale), on my cuisinart griddle so I would not have to turn on my oven... I split the batches for later BLT's and breakfast meals. What a savings for sure. Thank you to all here who share their recipes with us. As seniors, we have the time to bake extra and make ahead meals. I so love looking in my freezer and see all my make ahead meals that I have prepared with ideas I have gotten here on your posts. I appreciate all who post here. I think we all have great ideas.
That sounds good
I make flat bread pizzas, and also make tacos, maranara sauce, bolignaise pasta sauce in bulk and freeze in the freezer for nights I do not feel like cooking.
When I was on holiday in the USA, we found that some motels had microwaves in the room, we purchased a number of microwave meals, and found that aome were really nice, but I would agree with you that sonethings cooked for the recomnended time in a microwave are not tasty or properly cooked.
Love your daily chats and look foward to them here in South Africa.
Good ideas. I make granola and give to my family and friends. They love it.
I never made homemade waffles. I like to make homemade bread
I make my own sloppy joe sauce - ketchup, tomato paste & brown sugar. I already have onion & green pepper in my meat mixture. I have hubby taste the sloppy joe sauce so I can't give you specifics.
I also ONLY buy Krusteaz pancake & pie crust mixes. I used to make mine from scratch but Krusteaz can't be beat!
yum
Microwave food is nasty!!
Love the recipes! Can you do an update about how the intermittent fasting is going? I understand if it's too private. I'm debating it, because ive already lost a ton but I have 20 left. TIA🎉🎉
Absolutely!! Video series to come
I would rather buy tortilla’s,bread, pasta, and many condiments. I’ll make my own hummus, and all meals.
Things I make:
I make my own Ranch dressing and 1000 Island dressing.
Make my own chicken stock and Beef bone broth.
Make my own biscuits from scratch.
Cook whole bags of Rice, freeze flat in zip lock bags and into meal sized portions.
Bake whole bags of potatoes and make twice-baked potatoes to wrap & freeze for later.
Cook 20 pounds ground beef at a time to portion and freeze flat in zip lock bags.
Cook whole boxes of pasta al dente, freeze for later use in a recipe.
Make ahead breakfast burritos, wrap and freeze.
Cook whole boxes of sausage patties.
We make popcorn on the stove or in a Stir Crazy machine and not buy microwave popcorn. It tastes so much better and is way cheaper. However, I prefer to buy take out Chinese food, I just can't make it taste like the take out version.
I minimise microwaving because I have doubts whether it is bad for health. I prefer to steam or use the oven toaster to heat up.
Hello...
2 tips to save money and time...
* whenever any vegetables are required to be oven cooked, swap with steaming...
instead of 1hour energy wasting cooking in an oven, try steamkng veg it takes aprox.10 to 15mins max... then add dressings of choice to eat...or place in a grill for 3mins.
* instead of cooking oats in the morning, save energy and time just add water or milk upto 1cm over the oat quantity ~ cover n place in fridge overnight... by morning time oats a soaked, add toppings and they're ready to eat.
Sounds good
Do you have a good banana bread read recipe? I’ve tried several and can’t find one that I love. Like you I love to make pumpkin bread.
Yes, look up Banana bread using one Banana on RUclips
Thanks!!❤
Hello Everyone...I've made homemade pasta sauce forever. Growing up in a Italian family, we never ate anything else. That's a tradition I carried on in my family as well as my 35 yr old son. I love homemade bread, but when I baked it years ago (had a bread machine), it was so delicious we were eating way too much. I returned the machine and bought bread ever since. I would absolutely not cook anything in the microwave, but do use it to make frozen vegetables or reheat cooked food.
Sounds great!
You know I love saving money this way and it is also healthier. Great job 👏

We love making homemade tempeh and seitan. Surprisingly easy and affordable. Also enjoy making a quick oat milk when needed. And will never understand why so many buy pre-made hummus/guacamole etc.

I make beef jerky, farmer cheese, yogurt, Mayo, dips and salad dressings, low carb breads, many flavored roasted nuts.
Most microwaved convenience foods are crap but some are passable. I do microwave leftovers.
You make quite a few foods
We mostly use the microwave to heat leftovers. Take care. I've been doing a lot of canning. We don't have a garden, we buy what's on sale or frozen veggies.
Sounds great!
Thx for sharing !!!! 😄🥰
You’re welcome 😊
Agree with you on the microwave - it's only used for reheating and occasionally defrosting if I forget to get something out of the freezer, but that is rare. Because of my bad reactions to artificial ingredients, especially any kind of sweetener, I make most everything from scratch whether it saves time or not. Someone did share with me a granola recipe that's pretty quick and easy that I use on yogurt or just to eat plain as a snack that only requires rolled oats, butter, honey, and cinnamon. I don't know who/where to credit for the recipe, so not sure it would be okay to share it, but I bet there are a bunch online. I have also found recipes I can eat in the 100 Days of Real Food books which I check out from my local library. I really want to try your crock pot yogurt recipe! Thank you for sharing that. I buy plain Greek yogurt and flavor with frozen berries, pure maple syrup, and a little vanilla. With my sugar problem, this is my version of ice cream.
I make my own bread, but I have stopped making bagels due to time constraints. I also make my own hummus.
Do you usually buy frozen fruit
yes

Hi Dawn! I make most of my food. I don’t make yoghurt but, I don’t eat it that often either so, a container of Greek yoghurt lasts a long time. I make my own coffee, too. In fact, I made an iced coffee using instant coffee and oat milk, just before I tuned into this video. I like making pancake batter and keeping it in the fridge. Makes for a quick breakfast. I also make crepes and freeze them between baking paper. You can wrap almost anything in a crepe! Great content, as usual! 😀🌻
