The Hidden Story Behind Jesus' Washing the Disciples' Feet

  • I'm continuing my series on undesigned coincidences. Here, I explore a coincidence that involves both Luke and John. Why does Jesus specifically say "I am among you as him who serves?" in Luke's Gospel? And why does Jesus go to the extent of washing his disciples' feet in John's Gospel? Reading the accounts individually doesn't reveal the complete picture, but when we bring the two together, they mutually illuminate each other in an undesigned manner. These passages bear the mark of eyewitness testimony rather than literary invention.

Agreed, Jesus is unique. Many religions are performance based, but Christianity is love based. Take Hinduism for example, you must gain good karma to not incarnate as something lower. In Sikhism, you must live an extremely legalistic life, even stricter than Christianity. In Islam, they believe your good works must outweigh your bad works to get to heaven. In Buddhism, they believe you must have a complete cessation of Attraction or desire, to achieve Nirvana. In the pagan religions of the ancient middle east, such as Sumeria, they believed their gods had to be fed their sacrifices in order for the gods to give them favors in return. However, in Christianity, Yahweh God pursues us. He doesn't need anything from us, but he wants us. That's why he made salvation available to us as a free gift.
"Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. 5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." - Philippians 2:4-11 ESV

John 17:9 " I pray for them : I pray NOT for the world, but for them which thou hast given me: for they are thine."
As you said in Luke Jesus pointed out the difference between the world from his disciples. The disciples were not to be governed as the world governs.
Jesus didn't go around washing everyone feet but his disciples who he made clear whom is not of this world. The disciples were acting "worldly" fighting among each other .... the world influence us so we need to depend on Jesus to wash our feet in order to have fellowship with him. Jesus our High Priest serves us so we can serves others and preach the gospel.
In Acts we saw the apostles appoint deacons to serve the people in the church so they could continue spreading the gospel.

You can skip the story and get to the juicy meaning or you can leave out the meaning to give an element of depth and mystery.
Modern people are addicted to flattery. Jesus washing feet is misconstrued by modern people as flattery, when in fact it requires humility to even understand the meaning of how God serves us. It's amazing to me how foolishness can reverse a lesson.

Testify, do you think I'm being too cynical when my first thought about this sort of stuff is that explaining these sorts of undesigned coincidences won't lead anyone to faith and repentance? What I mean is, the skeptics seem to always be playing a game of hot potato with their criticisms. They load up on so many objections, that to provide an in depth explanation of why a particular objection doesn't work, they often just jump to a different objection in my experience. It's hard to me to see how to explain to skeptics sometimes that they're often guilty of the leaky buckets fallacy.
On the flip side, as a Christian, I've found your content to be quite edifying. So, thanks for that. Also, to be a little more hopeful, perhaps this sort of stuff makes a bigger difference than I imagine since I came to Christ primarily through philosophy and apologetics. Anyway God bless you and keep you. Thanks for the video. :)

When the Bible mentions foot washing we should always remember two things. One is that in those days everyone wore sandals. The other is that the streets back then had a lot more livestock wandering through them than what we would be accustomed to. Imagine walking through a barnyard or a feedlot in your flip flops. Washing someone's feet when they came to the house would be very necessary but also pretty gross and disgusting. It would be something you would have a servant do. This shows just how Jesus humbled himself to his apostles.

On a flat earth, the sun would have to be much closer and would hover above the surface. There are three things that you would see as the sun approaches the horizon.

2: the sun would get smaller and smaller as it approaches the horizon until it is so small that it is unable to be seen.
