    The washing of the feet is a renewal of Baptism, through confession. It was not just an example of superiors acting in humility towards those they lead, since the command was to wash one another's feet. It was a beautiful thing for Peter, who was already at that moment clean, that he should be ceremonially made clean from not only where he had been, but also blessing him on his road ahead. A persons walk is a combination of where they are coming from and where they are going.

      Yea. I think it has much to do with confession!!! I like this angle. Few have heard this. I like the preparation for receiving ordination part. But I’m stuck on the “so you must do for others...” part.

      @@ifhollick Aye. "Those who have bathed all over, need only wash their feet,.." These words to me are representative of Baptism, since these two Sacraments effectively do the same thing. I tie it together with James 5:16, in a verse that follows after instructions over the anointing of the sick.

      @@ifhollick Doing for others what The Lord has done for us.. The patience and the love of God for us is inscrutable and divine. It is not of man, nor does it belong to the world, whose nature first tends its own needs. Christ, not of this world, gave us the example of self sacrifice, with a more perfect love than that which seeks, also, its own interests in every relationship. He gives in the same way that he forgives-- yet always desires us to imitate him, as was ever expected when he designed us in His image. In love and forgiveness we open the way for others to walk in his ways.
      Is it easy? No. The way to Calvary is arduous and thankless. Yet with God, the journey does not end with death, and the prize of the New is not found in the Old; our promise is not prosperity, wealth or recognition, since only hell is interested in such things. The less a man seeks leisure, the more generous he is to those in need, applying all credit to his Maker, the closer he is to the heart of his Lord and loving God.
      To dress yourself as a slave to give and do the work of redemption is true joy and contentment.

  • @Raverraver9999

    Man is created to praise, reverence, and serve God our Lord, and by this means to save his soul.
    And the other things on the face of the earth are created for man and that they may help him in prosecuting the end for which he is created.
    From this it follows that man is to use them as much as they help him on to his end, and ought to rid himself of them so far as they hinder him as to it.
    For this it is necessary to make ourselves indifferent to all created things in all that is allowed to the choice of our free will and is not prohibited to it; so that, on our part, we want not health rather than sickness, riches rather than poverty, honor rather than dishonor, long rather than short life, and so in all the rest; desiring and choosing only what is most conducive for us to the end for which we are created.

    There were some amazing insights here. One question though. If Jesus was installing His priests of His New Covenant, then He would also be installing Judas (whom He said was not clean). How can this be? He said all were clean but one. Would God install Him? What about Matthias? I Feel like I'm missing something here.

    • @MikePasqqsaPekiM
      @MikePasqqsaPekiM Год назад

      Judas was offered everything, and rejected Christ instead, a sobering reminder for all of us.
      Matthias was installed by the Apostles, because Jesus gave them the authority to do this. Apostolic succession is Biblical, we see this in the Acts of the Apostles when Matthias is made one.
      More detailed answers out there to be sure, but hope this helps.

    When a sinner believes in the gospel of Grace for the forgiveness of sins and receives the Holy Spirit and enters into Eternal Life as a child of God, he becomes a 'new creation' in Christ Jesus.
    It is very important to stress that it is 'in Christ Jesus' that we are a new creation - NOT IN OURSELVES. We are still in our human bodies and subject to temptation and sin. The feet of the believer speaks of our walk as Christians in this life on earth. The Lord Jesus was showing them that though they were 'saved' they needed to keep their walk clean and to help each other to keep spiritually clean before God. Ephesians ch. 5 tells us that it is by the washing of water by the Word that cleanses us daily from defilement. If we 'dabble' in sinful practices we can have no part with Christ in His service. Therefore a continual washing of our feet, with the help of others, keeps us usable for God.

    Great. A good reminder about the analogy of Jesus-"Moses". I would add the title "Lord" used by John for Jesus has anti_Cesar and Pax Romana connotation as all NT, esp. Phil 2:11; a historical Jesus never considers himself "God" or "Lord"(Mk 10:18, etc.). The Council of Trent statements are ok contra logical fancies of Luther@others but conditioned the imperfect knowledge of that time, now totally outdated and useless
