If you're only looking at this scene from the movie, then yes, this is 100% martial rape. However, if you read Mitchell's book it's quite clearly consensual, and Scarlett is completely on board. However, it would be difficult to show that in a movie in 1939, unless she kissed up while he carried her up the stairs (which they don't show), so instead they added the following scene of her in the morning, clearly happy with the way the night turned out. However, this scene without that context would definitely qualify as martial rape. Anyone seeing just this scene without the context the book provides should not find this romantic, they should be horrified. As for those saying she deserved it for being a terrible wife, take away the fact that this is a movie. Would you say that to a rape victim in 2017? I hope not.
Well said, but I think the movie intended to imply that it wasn't rape through the implicature of the morning after scene. Rape victims are traumatized, something Scarlett is clearly anything but. I don't know why they didn't include Scarlett's reciprocation in the movie (perhaps to play on the drama?) but I think Rhett is only guilty of kissing her against her will, not marital rape, or else the morning after scene would make absolutely no sense. Who are we to say what happened when they reached her bedroom? This video is trying to denigrate rough sex by using a clip of a movie out of context.
@Skarbie Well yes auntie... But in this particular scene and with these people it was incredibly sexy, which is proved by Scarlet's smile in the following scene. Also, maybe for you and your guy this kind of behaviour is wrong. I myself love it such games. And..? will you tell I shouldn't be doing/liking/preferring so?
Ridiculous! Scarlett was already inlove with Rhett at this point, but too proud to ever admit it in front of him. They enjoyed teasing each other. But I think R.didn't believe that she actually loved him,not Ashley. Scarlet wouldn't have had a good marriage with Ashley. I really don`t know why they call this a rape. We don`t really see what happened in the bed. Besides, next morning Scarlett was very pleased and even she refuses divorce Rhett as he proposes. They only have rough consensual sex and that`s it.
Why nit pick this movie gone with the wind was the greatest movie I've ever seen and until this day I still love this movie it's my favorite movie of all times vivian Lee was absolutely beautiful and Clark gable was very handsome what a great movie yours truly W.C.
M I absolutely does make it rape. forcing sex does make it rape, regardless of whether the victim enjoyed it. A positive physiological action is not the same thing as consent.
Scarlett's rebukes are a scam. She likes how Rhett Butler takes control of the situation. Scarlett O'Hara is a typical Aries woman. They are strong, independent woman who are secret romantics, even while they are fighting against it. Rhett and Scarlett are perfect for one another. Scarlett's romantic fancies in wishing for Ashley indicates her true romantic loyalty, having no clue that Ashley didn't actually love her. She doesn't realize the truth of that until the end. Rhett is insanely jealous. He could have any woman he wanted, but the only one he wanted resists him. It drives him mad! He must be a Scorpio. LOL They both have some growing up to do. Definitely read the book! And read the sequel.
It's not marital rape, the book clears that up indefinitely. I'm gonna just say this... there's nothing wrong with passion, you know. In this day and age, it's not express consent unless you're saying yes every 5 seconds. Wtf is sexy about that? Getting really sick of the constant witch hunt in EVERY thing regarding toxic masculinity, gaslighting etc.
@Skarbie Well No. It was consensual. We're not talking about before, we're talking about if the sex was consensual or marital rape. It was CONSENSUAL. So he twisted her wrist, who cares?
I love this story but I’m sure the leftists/feminists would think it horrible, it’s not! This is a story about love and personal growth, Lord know it took a lot to get Scarlett to that point, a bit too long for Rhett. He loved her and she loved Ashley and that would drive anyone a little crazy. Although if the next scene was anything to go by, Scarlett loved every minute of the night they shared.
I have seen the whole movie many times, and yes it absolutely is marital rape, which in 1939 was not publicly assumed to even be a thing. The common unspoken cultural belief at the time was that marital rape doesn't exist and that women enjoy it when it's forced on them. That thought process still exists today in older, very conservative populations. The fact that so many in this 2020 comments section defend this as being romantic behavior is rather appalling...
Scarlet enjoyed the sex with Rhett but didn't want to get pregnant anymore so she could keep her waistline small. So she kept pretending to have a headache so as to push Rhett away. Back in those days, they did not have birth control. But the next motning, she definitely was happy😊
I’m interested in people’s opinion: why does Scarlett go downstairs in the first place? She knows she’s in the doghouse with Rhett and she just told Mammy she doesn’t want to see him. It’s definitely not because she heard a noise. I think it’s because she felt bad and was hoping to patch things up. The whole meeting goes so poorly, it seems like she would have been better off just going to bed.
Rhett suggests it's because she wanted a drink, that she drank often, and the way she 'professionally' downs that shot would suggest he was right. I do think she wanted to avoid him that night, and that she badly needed a drink after a very stressful day. Boy what a tragic story/film
I think the Love Hate Passionate Relationships Started with them! Ej & Sami remind me of them! I think the Passion & Desire is what I love to watch! Who wants boring?
It's certainly true that the next morning she wakes up with a big smile and obviously very much a satisfied wife who loves her husband. Some people think he spanked her first - and they fought and ended up making love. But judging from her reaction the next morning it is difficult to call it rape.
I HATE when the woke crowd revisits movies like this and complains that they contain “objectionable” and “offensive” scenes. READ THE BOOKS (yes there was a sequel) for proper context and leave classic movies like this alone!
Todays 'woke' and very arbitrary 'me too' movement should give a break to a classic movie masterpiece made over 80 years ago which they chose to show out of its full context. The Ashley Wilkes love triangle was central to the theme of the movie.
There was no "marital rape"! Scarlett "romanticized" Ashley Wilkes, but she was too string-willed to put up with Ashley if she ever got him! She needed someone like Rhett, who would go toe-to-toe with her and call her bluff. Just as he did by dragging her upstairs and her smile in the morning tells the rest of the story!
I hate the way people are easy to say this is sexual assault, I watched this movie many times when I was young. He treated her like a queen, and he didn't get the love that he deserved from her. He did everything for her. At the end she wanted him back. Rhett had enough, and his most famous words/ lines were "Frankly My Dear, I Don't GIVE A DAM"....❤❤❤❤
You're correct. And actually the audience doesn't even know what kind of sex they had that night. I sort of agree with that comment about "communists" trying to ruin a nice classic Hollywood film with declarations that Rhett is some kind of deranged man who wanted to force his wife the whole time. It doesn't sound right🤨
I agree. Even Rhett says that if she had Ashley she wouldn't know what to do with him. I guess a lot of us as young ones have a crush on someone totally inappropriate for us, I know I did, and as we grow we realise that the person was totally wrong. But Scarlett stubbornly stuck to that thought. And like Rhett said, Ashley couldn't be mentally faithful to Melanie. And like many men, he could have told her no, but he kept stringing Scarlett along.
For a man to live such a Long time to be rejected..one can understand soo well He must have felt like a fool He had to react to balance the unjustice from her It IS a limit for how Long You can reject your nearest Gods 1. Commandments to Love our next..in higest grade must ALSO be to love our nearest near..our Spouse
In the movie, as many commenters say, this is marital rape. In the book, it's more consensual, but still dubious. I would say that one thing most people here are ignoring is that she's not happy in the morning after scene because she enjoyed it. She's happy because she finally knows that Rhett loves her, and now she can use it against him. This is clearly stated in the book, but not really shown in the movie. The troubling implication here is that because he forced himself on her, she believes that he truly desires and loves her. I don't think Gone With the Wind presents this as a good thing. Scarlett is a survivor above all else, and she believes persistence and selfishness to be love because that's the only way she knows how to fight for something she loves. This book has a thousand different layers to every character, but nobody is a cut-and-dry 'good person', even Melly is flawed by her virtue and blind loyalty (like when she helps cover up the murder Scarlett commits). That's the point, everyone is deeply flawed. We're not supposed to aspire to the characters. We're supposed to learn from them.
To the one who wrote the title. The exception doesn’t make the rule. And for each situation there’s individual interpretations meanings rights and wrongs which are only left to God to judge in real life. To arrive at extremes as banning or shaming a movie that’s frankly a masterpiece in its genre is limitative and plain stupid. That lady character there was probably one of the first women in that society to be bold enough to say “take your hands off me” and that man there was probably one of the first at that level to be plainly sincere with his counterpart. Appreciate their acting, take into account the epoch and many many other lenses etc etc. Enjoy the damn thing. It’s a good movie.
Her obsession with Ashley was neverending and exasperating. Meanwhile Rhett helped her a lot even before marriage (he gave her the money to start her lumber business and protected her all the time in the book) and she still obsessed about Ashley. Stupid woman. She was practical and hardworking and ambitious. But she was a fool. She couldn't accept failure. That helped her in life but made her delirious about the only man who said NO to her. The rejection made her mad. I completely understand why Rhett didn't believe her sudden change in the object of her fixation, at the end. She felt she was losing him so she started fixating on him. Seriously doubt this woman was capable of loving anyone. She was a narcissist and couldn't even love her own children. She often referred to Bonnie Blue "as her favourite child" like she was just a pet. The other two kids she had by previous husbands were terrified of her. The movie made her look much better than the book. In the book she is nothing but a cold blooded narcissist.
I would agree with you except for the original source material. In the book it was consensual. You can thank the censors for cutting away at the staircase like that. Hollywood and the Moral Majority always played up that sex was always dirty outside of marriage and then it does this kind of scene between angry spouses. They're married to each other and yet, even in marriage- there has to be some virtuous tension mixed in with the desire, otherwise both characters are awful sinners that should burn in hell.
I think in these years violence in marriage was not even considered. Anyway Scarlett is happy mostly because she thinks that she has power on him - but he goes away. I don't think that Scarlet ever really enjoys sex. When she thinks she loves Rhett, it's too late. And after all she fights mostly to get power and not love.
Rape is defined by criminal code of the jurisdiction, hence the concept is inherently non-universal. Ex post facto criminalization of acts is forbidden by the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, as well as major conventions on human rights. I'm quite sure that in 1800s, criminal codes excluded all sexual acts between spouses from consideration as a rape. If Scarlett hadn't wanted Rhett to "do her" at his will, she wouldn't have married him. Obviously, she was happy with the choice she made.
Although, the scene is cut short because of the censors from that era in movies, the night they spent together was consensual. I've heard many a story of preacher wives being jump on, in the middle of the night and forced into sex acts that they didn't consent to . . . It sounds like you're okay with both.
There is no such thing as marital rape. Both husband and wife are of one body on the eyes of God so either partner must consent to each other desires whether they want to or not.
She loved Rhett but was focused on a childhood dream until the end and by then it was too late because Rhett had had enough of her rejection. Yes by today's standards is marital rape but back then it was a husband getting his rights.
A lot of people say it’s either a moment of passionate love and some say it’s assault and everyone is entitled to their opinion. And the following scene of Scarlett being pleased after the night certainly shows either way Scarlett enjoyed it. Personally I like to interpret it as assault, specifically because a huge part of the film is that Rhett and Scarlett are both selfish and toxic characters that grew up in privileged backgrounds that allowed them to be selfish and spoiled. So it makes sense Rhett would take what he wants regardless of consent and Scarlett would be so starved for excitement and attention she would enjoy it. And yes that would make these icons of cinema are more toxic than I’m sure the audience at the time would admit, but frankly I don’t care if they’re toxic cause I always enjoyed tragic heroes with relatable fatal flaws that cause drama. Darth Vader blew up planets and killed many people, Harley Quinn aided the Joker in acts of terrorism, Rick Sanchez created a universe to enslave it, and Bojack essentially groomed a child celebrity, yet no one thinks less of them as characters despite their obvious toxicity. And Scarlett and Rhett are prime examples of what happens when people don’t let selfishness be gone with the wind.
If you're only looking at this scene from the movie, then yes, this is 100% martial rape. However, if you read Mitchell's book it's quite clearly consensual, and Scarlett is completely on board. The problem with all these haters is that when the masculinity of men is gone from society they'll be the first to complain there's no real men left.

Yeah what they don't show in that clip is that big ass grin on her face the next morning!
+Melissa Warren doesnt not make it rape
+DXhardy831 doesn't make it rape either
M I absolutely does make it rape. forcing sex does make it rape, regardless of whether the victim enjoyed it. A positive physiological action is not the same thing as consent.
I didn't watch this movie so I do not know if there is a scene after when this youtube clip ends. If there is not, how can you tell she was raped?
M um, he grabs her and pulls her up to the bed room as she struggles, seems like a pretty solid indicator
Scarlett really loved Rhett.
She didn’t deserve him tho
Oh, yes, "Scarlett" is a GREAT sequel! ^_^
This Aries woman agrees 100%!
Did you see the movie? Looking the scene out of context is really silly!
She looked quite happy the following morning. Actually giddy.
Read the book
Read some Paglia and clear the feminist brain worms from your head while you still can, Tiff.
Excellent comment Tiffany. Respect.
This person obviously hasn’t seen the movie or even the following scene where Scarlet couldn’t wipe that childish smile off her face
Where did you watch the film? Can share?
A Gen z interpretation of a classic story.
In the book she goes down because she wanted to drink and didn't notice that rett was in the room.
I think the Love Hate Passionate Relationships Started with them! Ej & Sami remind me of them!
I think the Passion & Desire is what I love to watch! Who wants boring?
Rape isn’t fun. Not being hated isn’t boring.
It's certainly true that the next morning she wakes up with a big smile and obviously very much a satisfied wife who loves her husband. Some people think he spanked her first - and they fought and ended up making love. But judging from her reaction the next morning it is difficult to call it rape.
Why is everyone so pissed off about it?
I HATE when the woke crowd revisits movies like this and complains that they contain “objectionable” and “offensive” scenes. READ THE BOOKS (yes there was a sequel) for proper context and leave classic movies like this alone!
Todays 'woke' and very arbitrary 'me too' movement should give a break to a classic movie masterpiece made over 80 years ago which they chose to show out of its full context. The Ashley Wilkes love triangle was central to the theme of the movie.
Who cares what they think? Their opinions are irrelevant.
Sexiest scene in history of film.
Agree
Science not religion Then you're in the wrong place.
Avalanche thank you. Real men respect women. Periodt.
Its shit like this that confuses the hell out of men.
False. This is abuse.
I mean he was drunk so he couldn’t exactly consent either
The big title at the end was really funny. next time maybe look at the scene after this
I agree totally
That can be said for a lot of these liberal Communists. They won't listen to reason. It's their way or... death
Anyone seriously claiming this is a case of rape must be deranged. Basically what they're having is "angry sex". Nothing more, nothing less.
You're correct. And actually the audience doesn't even know what kind of sex they had that night. I sort of agree with that comment about "communists" trying to ruin a nice classic Hollywood film with declarations that Rhett is some kind of deranged man who wanted to force his wife the whole time. It doesn't sound right🤨
Just mainly in this scene. No one is claiming he was acting deranged through the entire movie
That staircase though
This luxurious carpeted staircase makes me dream, again, & again, repeatedly ❤
This movie has always frustrated me. Rhett vs Ashley, no comparison.
Finally, I am not alone.
I'm not surprised heterosexual men can only sympathise with Rhett who chooses to threaten his wife with violence and takes her by force.
@@BLTKellys read the book
I totally agree
For a man to live such a Long time to be rejected..one can understand soo well
He must have felt like a fool
He had to react to balance the unjustice from her
It IS a limit for how Long You can reject your nearest
Gods 1. Commandments to Love our next..in higest grade must ALSO be to love our nearest near..our Spouse
A great movie.
You don’t know what happens when he gets her to the bedroom….maybe she kisses him back, disrobes him….
She was smiling in the morning.
So many people are ready to pull it apart 😂
Here we go, political correctness gone awry...
Whoever says this is rape doesn't understand real passion. Nothing to do with common ugly rape.
Worried for you..
She actually had 2 children before she met Rhett in the book
I love this movie❤❤
Forget how Scarlett behaved with Rhett, that's fine!! I don't agree!! Justice like beauty is in the eyes of the beholder....yeah!!
Oh she was pretty happy about it the next morning lol
Are you serious?!
By the way she looked in the morning I think she like it very much.
This is the most sexiest scene that I've ever seen....Gable is breathtaking ❤❤❤....he is a sex bomb❤❤❤❤❤ the most successful movie of all time ❤❤
Hoo gente coloca dublado pra gente, por favor.
Please, stop disecting masterpieces of this kind and taking pieces of it out of context!
A man.Not a mouse.
Vicky 12 below got it right. If there's singing & humming in the a.m., the lady's alright. Real rape has no romance.
OH.PLEASE. THEY DIDN'T SHOW WHAT HAPPENED ONCE THEY GOT TO HER BEDROOM.
In marriage you give 100% of yourself to your partner and you expect 100% from your partner!
I think my parents were kids when this movie was made.ive never seen this
실제 부부같은 리얼한 연기 넘 재밌다
She loved Rhett but was focused on a childhood dream until the end and by then it was too late because Rhett had had enough of her rejection. Yes by today's standards is marital rape but back then it was a husband getting his rights.
Oh, good Lord! Seen worse than that in todays music videos!😮
Favorite scene in the movie! Reminds me of my last relationship. ;-)
Wow I'm very sorry for you :(
Lollll Toxic 🤣🤣🤣
…baby you a victim.
What was the point of this video!?!? No violence and no crime
Very strange title.
❤Scalet non ha mai avuto il sentimento, cose'il vero amore 😢mi dispiace.... Film meraviglioso
The male and female psychopath marriage💔
I have this movy!
Beautiful
Technically, there is no such thing as "marital" rape. When you say "I do", that means you ALWAYS do.
Being that drunk, it couldnt have been that good
How do you know? She woke up with a smile on her face.
