Very interesting to hear you talk about the stippling oin the matt varnish and how your brush marks bleed (and blend) depending on the roughness of the surface.
the 8th legion, the drip lords. specializing in terrifying their enemies with their absolute baller drip, making them lose the will to fight even before the fight started.
THis really cool, just ordered the HH2 axe preator as a treat (Not getting into HH anytime soon) but gonna try to paint him in this still i think ! LOOKS RAD.
Really enjoyed the video it gave me inspiration to paint my BA similarly (with reds of course) though I've noticed I have difficulties making the highlights stand out they seem to kind of blend into the mephiston red (possibly due to the amounts of yellow rather than using white)
I have watched a couple of your videos involving oil washing. I see a lot of other artist use makeup sponges and wipe it away when wet and some others I see reactivate with spirits and use a brush but you seem to slip it on and just let it dry? Was curious if you use those other approaches and why? Thanks so much for your amazing content and look forward to Heresy 2.0 and the beautiful models you will paint.
I can't say for sure, but coming from using oils, he thins the thinnest portion a lot. It looks like he applies the thinnest portion to the parts that he has highlighted the most. Therefore he didn't really need to wipe it away.
I just cannot get on board with Night Lords having spider/superman/hero colors. Just does not work for me but when I see painters that have chosen a Red Violet they sit better in my head cannon. I would like to point out again how great this looks and that the scheme comments are not directed at your paint job good sir.
First time I used oils I totally washed my size 2 in mineral spirits, not the fancy art stuff either, hardware store grade.... And then shaped it with my tongue. It smelt like a car paint booth inside my head for at least a day.
Hi Richard this is the closest I think I have seen in capturing in midnight clad look that doesn’t come from Macragge. I have a lot of vehicles as well and wondering if this could be done with an airbrush for similar effect at all? Thank you sir
I love this. This is how I want to paint all my night lords now. I will start with the horus heresy age of darkness box. Love it so much. Is it possible that this is the preator from the Forge World Site?
Hey, Richard. Awesome tutorial! I wanted to ask a couple of questions because I’m gonna be painting my Night Lords army with your scheme soon. 1) Is it necessary to apply the Mecha Gloss Varnish and the Mecha Varnish Matt and at that stage too (right after the basecoat)? I mean, can i choose not to apply them and how would the end result be without them? 2) You mentioned in the video that you didn’t really like Calgar Blue for highlights. Would you suggest another colour for the highlights? I would really appreciate it if you could help me out. Thanks.
Hello. Sorry if the question has been asked already but what kind of black primer do you recommend ? This one seems to have a satin finish. Thank you again for your videos.
He regularly uses Vallejo surface primer, if I recall correctly. Vallejo mecha primer is my favorite, I find it to be a bit tougher, same with the Mecha varnished. Made with being handled in mind.
38:02 really? I would say that airbrushing varnishes will create such thin coats that you won't be able to notice the buildup. Maybe with a rattle can you will.
Do you think this process can work for white...? I paint white scars and i've been struggling to get a method of doing the white armour at both a fast pace but good quality. I have no airbrush and have never used oil paints before though...
I think that the reason for 40k to be more brighter than 30k is because 30k is more of a niche game, not many new players start with 30k so the old veterans that are already into the grimy muddled look just keep at it in 30k. Its my guess anyways :D
Sorry if someone asked you this but can you get the same effect with ak streak and grime instead of using oil paints? Not sure I can get the consistency you got from the oil paints.
I haven't tried it, my suspicion is that it would be a little dark, but the best thing to do is to quickly airbrush a model you aren't too concerned about and give it a coat of the streaking grime to see how it turns out.
Hey mate - the way you stipple and your whole process start to finish has been so impactful on the way I paint, thanks for these videos - cheers 🍻
Same here! I recently painted my first space marine as a space wolf and all thanks to this technique she came out extremely well.

My favourite painter painting my favourite traitor legion in my favourite painting style. I can die happy.
Your style has inspired me to get out of my comfort zone in my own painting. Incredible work!
I love this tutorial! More Night Lord's please.
The only mini painter I can watch all the way through. Amazing work.
Absolutely incredibly, really. Would love to see you tackle white Marine armor at some point.

Always get excited when you put up new videos!
Great job. You and Marco Frisoni are my favourite miniature painters

Aced the Macragge pronunciation. Also, stunning result

More Night Lords! Amazing stuff. Thank you for the content.
Really great technique. Gives it that grimdark look I was looking for. Going to apply this to my legions

Fantastic technique. Can you please make a video where you paint a Spacewolf this way?
Absolutely stunning !
This makes me want to repaint my 700 point army of Nightlords and get more heresy models. Thank you for the great video with the process.

it needs more blood splatters but other than that. it looks superb!
Night Lords are still among the loyalist legions as far as Im concerned!
Would love to see World Eaters in this style :D

You are a legend! This scheme is beautiful! FYI those skulls probably are of people of smaller stature… the Night Lords were, pragmatic 😅

Bell marked to get all notices, still nothing shows up :-(. Lucky I got a recommendation instead.
Always great :)
Any chance you could do World Eaters ?

That's awesome. Do you recommend doing this for all the models and infantry or just the HQ's?

Do you have any tips to someone who wants to get similar display quality without doing oil washes to do the blending + shading?
His blood angels video has a similar technique using darkoath flesh contrast paint and contrast medium in lieu of white spirits.
