I have the same press as you and have current Mathews bows and I don't use the small fingers at all. There's no need too with Mathews bows.you putting the fingers in the ring place on your bow and you could break your bow.you got the fingers on the ring place on the bow and your stressing out your limbs
On a compound bow, when the string stretches the draw weight increases because the cam rotates more. A new (shorter) string will decrease the draw weight. It's the opposite on long or recurve bows.
Very good Allie! I’ve been watching videos on this subject too. As of mater of fact, I’m waiting for my bow press right now. Comes tomorrow! Same as yours. You even have my bow vise. OMP. Pricey but you get what you pay for. Trying to decide what kind of strings to get. Ok coach, waiting for your next video! Cheers🍻
Are you setting up bows for yourself and others? Did you think of getting trained by the Matthews Academy out in Wisconsin? Maybe thats overkill but compound bows can hurt when they bite back. I cringe when I tune that last “e” string on my guitar.
If you turn the bow upside-down (with stabilizer pointing up) before pressing it, you can let the 2 pegs on the cams. And you MUST use these 2 cratles on the top of the limbs, they was intended to not let the bow slip from the press' fingers. You get lucky this time... Anyway very good and entertaining video 😃
@@OutdoorsAllie nothing dear. If you need some suggestions or help let me know. I'm not a dealer, but a normal archer with a "bit" of experience in bow building/tuning, i am very passionate. Feel free to message me if you need. 🙂
can I get a decent FIRST TIME bow at Academy for example? anyone have advice on a good inexpensive bow to start with and i expect to probably mess it up cause im learning.
As a former archery technician, I believe you should be able to get by with the regular fingers on most Mathew's bows, the avail might be an exception, but in my experience, it has worked better to use the regular fingers in the "grooves" I guess you could call them installed on the limbs of the bow. That's just me though.
What a are some of the newer Mathews bows you can use with out the having to use the special draw stop finger like Allie uses in this video to press the avail..and do the avail need to use the special finger...or can she just get by with out it and use the regular finger
Notice that 3/4 of the limb is not obstructed by the draw stop. Just move your finger out enough that it will not contact the press fingers when you rotate the cam around. Shouldn’t need different fingers to press that bow.
My thought is that will put uneven pressure on the limb and you’ll risk cracking them. I’ve seen cracked limbs before and having a finger that isn’t perfectly centered on the limb sounds like a recipe for disaster! Although everything I’m doing is a recipe for disaster lol
Outdoors Allie I work at a Mathews retailer and press hundreds of bows every year and when the HTR was new we pressed every bow this way and never had an issue.

I’ve seen a video where one installer said Gas Ghost were one of the best he has installed. My preferred Mathews dealer is a GAS dealer. I asked the manager what he puts on his bow, he replied Zebra. It all personal preference and what you can afford it seems.
Because of current events, archery shops near me have all been closed. And my string and cables started fraying. And I got a new sight, and a bunch of other equipment right before the pandemic........ So I got a bow master portable press, replaced all strings and cables, leveled all axis on the new sight, put in a smaller peep, and so on. I was also freaking out every time I had to press the bow. I never felt safe. But once I got it back to full draw, I knew everything was alright. My bow is as comfortable as ever. Best of luck to you! It's a fun project. It feels good to do it yourself.
Awesome job! I just changed cables and strings on my Mathews last week for the first time too. Just as nervous. Used 60X custom strings and cables and so far like them as well or better as the Zebras. No peep rotation, at least not yet.
May I make a couple of safety suggestions. Having worked in a bow shop and training others, I have seen and had bad things happen working with bows, both in and out of presses. First, tighten up any and all loose fitting clothing. Button up shirts and keep them tucked in. Keep sleeves rolled up tight above the elbow. This will keep clothing from getting caught up in the string/cables or cams and possibly pulling the bow out of the press. Second, keep your hair from falling down around your face. Ponytails or buns will keep the hair from getting caught up in string/cables or cams....you don't want your hair getting snatched from your head if the bow suddenly lets go. I have seen your videos and rarely do you shoot with flowing locks. Third, DON'T reach over the bow when working on it. You were smart going to the opposite side to install the string. I've seen bows get knocked out of the press when a tech reached over and leaned against it. It gets real ugly, real fast. And lastly, PLEEEEASE.....don't draw back a bow without an arrow nocked. Especially if the draw weight has not been set proper. I see this all the time and it makes me cringe. Even when people are being very careful to let down a drawn bow, I have seen the ugly results when it slips out of their grasp or jumps when they aren't expecting it. That's it. Think safety, think ahead, and think positive.
Kudos to you for doing your own bow work and building your own arrows. That's my only pet peeve about modern bows and such. Less ability for the average bowhunter to work on their own bows (change out strings, etc). My first bow, a Bear compound back in the 80's, had double teardrop cable ends...you drew the bow back, had someone put the new string on the other side of the teardrops and then lowered the bow tension. Voila, new string. I had a nocking tool, nocks and a square for the rest of the setting up. Easy peasy. Oh, and please wear safety glasses young lady when doing the tension type work.
Very Good Job Allie!! Really smart filming everything before starting. Taking your time, carefully checking each step along the way, and rechecking everything again when finished., and allowing Nick to risk his life testing your bow.."LOL" (Just Kidding")! Looking forward to watching your videos and learning more. Good Job!!
Don't know how I missed this but it's a day old anyway it was very funny but congratulations good job call Nick the guinea pigs and you in the background I did it😁🐸😊😜😀✌🐝
Did good. Not as nerve wracking as it seems. Another thing to add is always measure your ata length and brace height Then add/remove twists in the new set to achieve those measurements. It will keep you much closer to your prior tune. I was also scared to death y’all drawing with no arrow. Especially with a full fist on the string really induces torque and possible derails/dry fire on those crossentric style cams.
I love my takedown recurve. I use to shoot a compound but working on it was difficult and couldn't find a good shop. With my recurve the biggest challenge is making the wooden arrows and bowstrings.
