You should use a limit switch so when you open the scissors they turn on
That's what I was expecting, was slightly disappointed by the use of a regular switch. Did have a good laugh at the rest of the process.
probably would have happened if there wasn't the three day flaccid stand interlude, I assume
Stll it can easily be install using cut-off circuit
MrPaw45 same
@@PratikKatdare it would make perfect sense to add one, not only because of the easy installability, but also because of the name of the circuit
My electronics mentor used to say, "If you switch it on and it works the first time... Unplug it fast and double check, you did something wrong!"
That's served me for many years.
How come? Shouldn’t the goal be to have it work if you do everything right?
@@CosmicGaijin Because it could just be a fluke
@@CoreyT97 or some of us are just good?
Kidding, we're all just a human.
My prof used to say that eletronics need smoke in order to work -- cause if you can see the smoke, the electronics ain't working no more.
@@derradfahrer5029 That's the magic smoke that makes it work. Unfortunately once the magic smoke comes out it's hard to put it back in.
"You can definitely see a lot of imperfections in my welds, but since I'm the one making up what scissor lamps should look like, I can just decide that they're meant to be that way." I weld for a living, and have gotten pretty decent at it. Textbook looks aren't everything, and the time you would have saved doing it differently would be negligible. It's obviously not structural, and you tacked it up hella good beforehand and metal finished it beautifully. This is why I love seeing people's "imperfect" metal art, it is literally one of a kind.
A grinder and paint make me the welder I ain't.
I was reading this as she said it 😂
At least she tries, not like me. I'm a shit welder, but I braze anything you can braze, so everytime I can get away with braze welding steel and crap, that's what I go for.
Ofc, structural things I have to go get the TIG, but I swear welding machines have me blacklisted xD
The distressed rant followed by "Oh! It's not plugged in!" resonates with me a lot
would be really cool if it can actually turn on and off when you open/close them, instead of a switch, appreciate your videos
That's exactly what I thought her design idea was. Simone - mod2, embed the switch inside the scissors.
OMG THATS WHAT I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE HAHA
Yeah, sounded like that was the idea to me too
Yup, exactly that.
Same, when she first mentioned cutting the lights I thought she'll use a flex sensor. I actually love the idea and design a lot, but I'd probably get tired really fast opening and closing the scissors just for the show. I could simply leave them open and fiddle with the switch (and then the scrissors being mobile becomes redundant). Hope she posts a part two with improvements because I like this project a lot.

That was my first thought too. Though it runs the risk of reminding her that Adam probably has a way better sheet metal jigsaw in his cave...

lol that was exactly what i was thinking she would make. That would be a very cool effect tho
It would be even cooler if she put a potientometer in the joint so the light would be dimmable
But then you would always try to see if the light actually turns off, like in the fridge!
Okay but the little scissor closing 'snick' sound at the end there was so real and so satisfying. This was amazing.

Simone, graduated physical therapist here (and also a maker), the table that you were using is too high for you, so your shoulder was too extended and elbow too flexed. This ergonomics was causing you to not push down the jigsaw hard enough onto the table surface. Possible solution 1: kneel and cut on the floor, and use insulation foam to elevate the sheet metal. Possible solution 2: Build another lower workbench! (a rule of thumb is: the heavier the work, the lower the desk)

Die cutter presses with small simple shapes are great for cutting sheet metal. Make sure the press is well suited for the material and thickness, More travel on the handle (as well as longer handles) and less on the press usually means more force. When in doubt, try it! You can also extend the handle for more leverage, but you may break the stamp or even the press depending on the design.
Please don’t ever change. Love your whole personality. BTW I so want that lamp

Then you could cut the lights...FOR REAL.
@@joanna4655 True. It adds to the experience of something being built from a concept. Her frustration at not getting it right the first time, but persevering until she does get it right is what the creative process is all about.
I thought that would be the case
@@RBelmont Exactly. I was disappointed when she installed the switch. But it turned out great nonetheless.
Hello Simone, my name is Felipe, I'm writting from Argentina, I'm an electronic technician also a maker, I love the joke "So you can literally cut the lights." But, here's some ideas for that lamp!
1. you can upgrade the design by puting a switch that turns the lights on when you open the scissors and when you close them you can literally cut the lights.
2. well, I have only one jajaja I love your dog :D
PS: I found your channel on Electro Boom´s channel
Wow this is really cutting edge technology!
How to cut sheet metal with a jigsaw:
1: sell jigsaw
2: buy bandsaw
3: cut sheet metal
Right...........
She has a bandsaw in the background
SHE HAS A BANDSAW IN THE BACKGROUND.
A scrollsaw is marginally better to cut the way she was cutting, but it will have basically the same problem. Even a fine tooth metal cutting blade (on either jigsaw or scrollsaw) can catch and rip the work piece up. The only way i ever found to cut metal like she was, was to glue the metal down to scrap plywood, or use 20 clamps that you constantly move around. clamping right in front of where you want to cut works best, but then you need to move the clamp constantly. Really, glueing the sheetmetal to scrap plywood is the fastest (although it can still rip up).
Obviously a bandsaw is the perfect tool for this because it can never rip the piece up from the work bench.
There are very fancy jig saws that will push the blade forward on the down stroke and pull it back on the up stroke. If you BARELY push while cutting with one of those, it will not grab as much. But it will still grab. I think those are called oscilating jigsaws or something like that
Gunhaver TL;DR you’re wrong
Simone, always on the "cutting edge"
"I'm proud of you son"
Thank you! You have a voice and pointed people to proper places to feed their brains and help others! Educate and Entertain! Keep up the great work!
Just popping in as a guest who doesn't really watch your content to let you know I'm happy you are still kicking, because I kept getting your year old cancer videos, and was worried because life is fleeting.
Best wishes,
A random guy.
honestly what you're doing with the books is the most thoughtful and kind exercise ever
I love how honest this build montage is. 10/10 relatability
Been there, cutting sheet metal with a jig saw sucks. Much prefer a band saw. The constant movement of the blade downward pushing the workpiece down into the work surface (rather then grabbing and lifting it up) makes all the difference. Love the content! Stay safe.
Self-talking is a great way to keep your thoughts clear. Yeah, in social situations you have to keep a lid on it, but if you have the latitude, I heartily recommend it!
Literally, Everyone > “Cut the Lights” > it’s just a expression to turn off the lights
Simone > “Cut the Lights” > seriously, use the scissors to cut the lights off.
By the way, someone needs to get Simone a bandsaw for her birthday.
She has one. It's in the BG at 2:46. She just likes to make life difficult for herself XD
Or get a nibbler... hand or electric powered, no need for a saw on sheet metal she is using.
Or a CNC table.
Or a plasma cutter! 💨+⚡️

Hey Simone, I loved the video! Just a thought, you could potentially make the lamp turn on and off by just opening and closing the scissors. Hook up a flex sensor on the hinge of the scissors and when you open/close the scissors, there is going to be a change in resistance. Have the flex sensor as a voltage divider and voila!
Or you could put a microswitch in the hinge.
