  • With thousands of dives, Bonaire is still my favorite dive destination. We stay at Harbour Village Beach Resort Hotel and as you’ll see, our room is just steps from the water and I walk right in to amazing critters and creatures. I’m diving with 2 cameras. A Sony RX100ii with 2 2800 lumen iTorch video lights for my wide angle shots and an Olympus TG-4 with a 2800 lumen video light in a case for my Macro. In the mornings I dive the house reef which is right in front of our room and features its own wreck. These are really my favorite dives as I can putter along and go really slow and find all the really neat creatures. I can spend an hour just on the wreck and the fish come and go. There are rock piles with every type of fish you can imagine and there’s even a little coral head just past the wreck that has everything from Barber Pole Shrimp to eels to Christmas tree worms to Pederson shrimp to well the list goes on and on. I can also spend an hour at this tiny spot as well. There’s also a really great reef named Something special, but just about every day I start out for it and after an hour I never get there. People wonder why I love this reef. But it’s the only place I can go slow enough to really concentrate on individual fish rather than swim along a beautiful reef, but miss the details.
Then in the afternoons, I usually dive the boat. It’s great and the reefs are amazing with their awesome hard and soft corals and sponges. I particularly love the Pitcher and Elephant Ear Sponges. But mostly the afternoon dives are more like flying over the Grand Canyon. It’s like great panoramas but usually not memorable individual shots like I get in the morning. One of the dive guides is awesome at finding critters. So he did find me a few sea horses and frog fish you’ll see at the beginning of this video plus he found me some neat nudibranchs too. So, don’t skip the boat dives, but the slower you go and the less area you cover, the more you’re actually going to see. This is our 6th trip to Bonaire and I’d love to go back next month. It’s simply that wonderful.
