Don’t Carbonate Citrus Juice Until You Watch This Video

- This video documents my attempt to make a delicious homemade orange soda using only fresh squeezed juice, carbon dioxide, and a new type of carbonator. You can find the carbonator here: fruitmentor.com/fizz
Ever since I was 8 years old I have fantasized about drinking an orange soda like Orange Crush from the early 20th century when it came in brown bottles and actually contained oranges. I have a vivid memory of asking my grandfather about a case of empty brown bottles that I discovered in his workshop. At that time orange soft drinks were no longer made of oranges and my grandfather told me how they used to be. Since then many new carbonated orange drinks have been introduced that do contain citrus juices, but I have not yet had any that I thought were very good. The addition of the orange juice in these modern fizzy drinks seems to be more of a marketing gimmick than a recreation of the drink that I had imagined.
I have learned about so many delicious citrus fruits and for the past couple of years I have been experimenting with the carbonation of some delicious citrus fruit juices. I have carbonated orange juice, blood orange juice, mandarin juice, and many other citrus juices. Carbonating citrus juice presents some challenges, but in this video I summarize how to do it without making a mess. Now that I have succeeded in making delicious carbonated pure citrus juices, I suspect that they are much better than even the Orange Crush in a brown bottle that I was never able to try.
My daughter and I have had so much fun experimenting with carbonating various fruit juices that we decided to make a new RUclips channel where we would post some of our experiments carbonating various fruit juices, fruits, and other things. Just a tip for anyone reading this, if you juice a bunch of mandarins and end up with something like this 2:28, you can purée two or three of those halves and mix in with something like a pound cake batter to make a killer mandarin cake. It's that simple. Don't let those go to waste.
Thank you for sharing the tip! I will have to try it!

You’re welcome! Enjoy your carbonated juice! I’m working on more videos.
Wow!
I’m always trying to taste “real” juice soda!!
Looks yummy!!
And…..
I love all of your videos!
Scientific, very informative, yet lots of fun!
I am learning how to graft citrus trees from your videos. You have introduced where I should get bud wood.
And I learned lots of about HLB!😆
I have many citrus trees in my small garden (Lemon, lime, kumquat, Yuzu and dekopon…)
I have been watching those trees more careful since I learned about the disease.
Thank you so much!!

I am ordering one now. Thanks for sharing.
You’re welcome! I hope that you have as much fun with it as my family has!
Hi sir i had watched all you videos about citrus grafting which is very much informative please make one video on micro budding requesting you sir
What do you mean by micro budding? I've published one video on shoot-tip grafting:
ruclips.net/video/Q1dEG3aQa7E/видео.html
But I'm guessing that isn't what you meant.
Did you mean just regular budding to a small rootstock and not necessarily under a microscope?
Excellent tutorial..
Glad you liked it!
Useful vid, thanks. I love the comical editing 😂
Thank you! I'm glad that you enjoyed it!
I like your recording style very nice and informative.
Thank you! I’m glad that you liked it!!
I use a ginger bug to make natural ginger ale sometimes I add a little homegrown orange juice and pineapple juice makes awesome tropical soda. It's super carbonated naturally with no machine.
Thanks for sharing the tip! I will have to try that sometime!
wow great detail good video
Thank you!
great video!
Thank you! I am glad that you enjoyed it!!
i love your video.... thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!
You are so welcome!
What information, if any, do you have on that glass manual juicer you are using?
I have a similar one and believe it to be fairly old.. haven’t been able to find much info on it
The juicer was my grandmother's. It is at least 50 years old, but I don't know how much older it might be. I'm sure they used it to juice fruit from their citrus trees in Florida in the early 70s. I'm not sure when they bought the house in Florida, but I suspect that it was in the 60s. Probably they bought the juicer in Florida when they got the house and had their own citrus trees. Anyway, I really love it because of how it looks even though some modern juicers may be more practical.
I had carrot juice from a juicer at home once. It was surprisingly extremely sweet, and I didn't know there was so much juice in one carrot. I bet it would make a very good carbonated juice.
Thank you for the suggestion! I will have to try it. It sounds interesting!
What citrus variety do you think would make a good soda?
50/50 lemon lime
Blood orange
Lemon
ruby red grapefruit - delicious mixer for a paloma
A 2:1 ratio of sanguinelli:veniglia sanguigno juice
Have you tried the levivo carbonator? Im guessing since it has no pressure valve built in separately for the bottle it might not work, but have you tried??
I have not tried it. I looked it up and it does not look like it would work well.
@Fruitmentor I wonder if your old brown bottle one would be like an Irish Made soda we have here in Ireland called Club Orange, which is made with real oranges and still has bits in it. Maybe order yourself a couple of cans and have a try
Thank you for the tip! I was able to locate it in the foreign foods section of a local grocery store. It is the best commercial orange soda that I’ve ever had! Not as good as what I made for this video, but maybe halfway between what I made and an orange Fanta - like the two were mixed together.
I bought the Drinkmate because it can carbonate more lots of drinks.
I did no pulp OJ as my 1st test, but ended up with it foaming too much after mixing, and it was squirting out the top of the bottle. Scary.
I’ve had the same thing happen when I tried to do it too fast. Be sure to give it some time to settle and use the slow release valve.
Hello! Are the seeds produced (when different citrus trees flower simultaneously and together) hybrids or do citrus prefer to do self pollination?
Some citrus seeds are hybrids and others are not. I wrote a little more about that in my article on citrus breeding which you may enjoy. See here:
www.fruitmentor.com/breeding-growing-citrus-from-seed
@@Fruitmentor thanks! I’ll read it
this feels avant-garde… somehow. well done
Thank you! I'm glad that you enjoyed it!
I see you are not afraid of making huge mess 😂
Yes. I don’t mind making a mess. My wife wasn’t too thrilled, but she was a good sport!
I miss the videos
Orange Crush soda used to be my favorite - in the 1940's. It was delicious. Nothing like it today though.
Are you in your 90s?
Nothing beats picking it off the tree and eating it right there where it grew. For those wanting carbonation your video will help them avoid making messy mistakes.
I strongly agree! My favorite is a piece of fresh citrus right off the tree. I do enjoy experimenting with other things like this, though.
Can pomelo rootstocj graft with kumquat scion? Thankyou in advance
Sorry for the late reply. I don't know of any documented compatibility for this combination, but I think there is a good chance that it could work. The way to find out is to give it a try.
I did everything in the intro! 🤣🤣🤣
I hope that you got it to work!
@@Fruitmentor
Definitely. Put my fruit juice in the freezer for a bit before carbonating. And bought a Drinkmate. Huge difference!

Sorry. I just couldn’t help myself! ruclips.net/video/fBkbWKFv2pE/видео.html
@@Fruitmentor 😁🤣😂
request can you make video on chimera grafting
Thank you for the request! What exactly would you be interested in seeing in such a video?
I make my own soda but with the actual Sodastream spirit one touch and then after carbonate the water i then add my juice or homemade syrup and mix well and i works fine for me
Glad that you found something that you like! I guess this video wasn’t for you!
I plan to buy fruit juice that has been concentrated for a stronger flavor when I get my sodastream. Also, you can refill the co2 tank for dirt cheap with dry ice ruclips.net/video/BVlVqNQXJTk/видео.html If you have difficulties taking the top off the tank you can spray it with Wd-40 and wait a half an hour or so before trying to open it.
I wonder how much the vitamin c is reduced threw carbonation and if it defeats the purpose of juicing. Good videos!
Thank you! I doubt that the carbonation would harm the vitamin c as vitamin c is an acid and the carbonation just adds a bit of carbonic acid. But for the best health benefit it would probably be best to just eat the fruit and not juice it at all!
nice
Just stop by to say hello.
Waiting for your new vedios.
Cheers,

Thank you for the encouragement!! My next video is almost finished! I have a few more things to do, but it should be pretty soon.
How many minutes do you recommend to wait?
Probably an hour would work well. You can always take a look and see if the bubbles have subsided.
@@Fruitmentor thank you!
at 0:56 that was who i am when i tried doing orange juice haha xd

So much better!!

Hi. I agree about the making the right choice of soda makers for juice carbonization. That is why we developed the Rio Soda line. If you are interested in reviewing our products, please contact me. Thanks.
You have just saved me $150 dollars..I won’t to carbonate fruit juices for my health.
I'm glad the video was helpful!
