morons reading a script mate, I had an ex-cop (he's now a support worker for my partner who's dealing with a serious crime) and I mentioned how so many people quote policies as doctrine and just read a script...he told me how he was in 999 call centre and his mate was taking a call for someone to "come sort her daughter out", she was basically just having a tantrum..he went off script and told her this isn't a 999 situation and to not call again unless its an emergency...he got the sack...for using his brain.

UK law enforcement is a tasteless joke, ergo there is no law, only the man with the biggest stick.

Welcome to "the ends justify the means" rationale...
The camera scans AND CAPTURES the faces and compares them againat a database. That means they are, in fact, recording images. The fact that they are subsequently deleted, regardless of the time interval between capture and deletion, does not mean they weren't recorded, just that they weren't retained for a lengthy period of time. It would not take much to simply "forget" to take the last step of deleting the images. Nor will it be long before we see abuses of the "wanted" status for this technology as we have seen in the Licence Plate Reader technology.

They have the ability to record everyone who walks in front of their cameras and can try to identify any of them at a later date.

It's ironic that while the police are using facial recognition to record everyone, supposedly under strict rules, the officer in the video didn’t follow basic body-worn camera guidelines for turning on his own body-worn camera, breaching police regulations and transparency principles under the Data Protection Act. If the police can’t get simple rules right that have been around for years, how can we trust them to handle new facial recognition tech responsibly?
From watching this video, the auditor may have had his face covered, raising police suspicions, but the officer’s casual chewing didn’t exactly convey professionalism. I can’t think of any other job where it’s acceptable to chew gum while speaking to another person.
