The hidden inner wall of the Terrace of the Lepper King in Angkor Thom is a remarkable example of Khmer art and architecture. The terrace, which was built by King Jayavarman VII in the 12th century, is located in the northwest corner of the Royal Square of Angkor Thom, next to the Terrace of the Elephants. The terrace is named after a statue that was found on its top, which was believed to depict a king with leprosy. However, the statue is actually a replica of an 8th-century sculpture that represents Yama, the Hindu god of death and judgement. The original statue is now in the National Museum in Phnom Penh.
The hidden inner wall of the terrace is a U-shaped structure that encloses a narrow passage with five tiers of bas-reliefs . The reliefs depict various scenes from Hindu mythology, such as gods, demons, Garudas, Nagas and Apsaras. The reliefs are carved with great detail and skill, showing the mastery of the Khmer artists. The hidden inner wall is thought to have been used as a cremation site for royal family members and high dignitaries.
The Terrace of the Leper King is one of the most intriguing and mysterious structures in Angkor Thom, the ancient capital of the Khmer Empire. Located in the northwest corner of the Royal Square, this 7-meter-high platform is topped by a statue that has given rise to many legends and speculations.
The statue depicts a naked figure with a serene expression, sitting cross-legged on a lotus throne. It is believed to represent Yama, the Hindu god of death and ruler of the underworld. However, its modern name comes from a 15th-century sculpture that was found at the site, which showed signs of leprosy-like discolouration and moss growth. Some also associate it with King Yasovarman I, who allegedly suffered from leprosy and built a hospital nearby.
The terrace itself is a marvel of art and architecture, with five tiers of elaborate carvings on its front retaining walls. The carvings depict scenes from Hindu mythology, such as the churning of the ocean of milk, as well as royal processions, courtiers, apsaras, nagas, and other mythical creatures. The carvings are remarkably well-preserved, especially on the hidden inner wall that was covered by the outer structure for centuries.
The Terrace of the Leper King is more than just a decorative monument. It is also thought to have served as a royal cremation site, where the bodies of the kings and nobles were burned after death. The terrace symbolizes the transition from life to death, from the earthly realm to the spiritual realm, and from the human world to the divine world.
