The Beatles are the Mozarts and Bachs of the Twentieth century. There were none that could compare with their songwriting talents. Billie Eilish said Happiness is a Warm Gun is the first song she ever performed in front of people at her school. lol --- The was inspired when John Lennon was at a magazine stand and he saw a gun magazine that said, "Happiness is a Warm Gun". Where that slogan came from is from Peanuts, Snoopy & Charlie Brown. Charles Schultz who created Peanuts came up with the slogan "Happiness is a Warm Puppy" referring to Snoopy and that slogan became popular and got used in different ways. This a John Lennon song and he sings the main vocals and the rest of The Beatles sing backup vocals.
This and Rocky Racoon, from the White Album (actually self Titled Beatles album) are songs ive loved since i was 8 years. Now, looking back, what amazes me is how they made such amazing, ground breaking music like this...in thier MID-TWENTIES!
The Beatles suddenly became so big in the 63, 64 and 65. Beatlemania appeared. They had their unbelievable fame and success globally and they could have just stuck to what they did at the moment and enjoyed life, but they didn't. I'm really really really glad they didn't. They kept learning, exploring and evolving in their music. Their music grew, so did their fans, who have learned to appreciate better music
A Lennon masterpiece. The Beatles rehearsed this song for hours and hours to shape it and perfect it. This is a start to finish take. I've noticed HB you haven't reacted to early Beatles music. Songs like 1963's Twist and Shout and You Really Got A Hold On Me. Or 1964's Rock And Roll Music. The connection you are making with The Beatles, starts with these songs. There was a book by Charles Schultz (creator of "Peanuts") called "Happiness Is A Warm Puppy," that used the "Happiness is..." theme throughout it. It was published a few years before this song, and I think it influenced the title.
Sort of. There was a piece in a rifle magazine called “Happiness is a warm gun” which directly inspired John. The name of the article is based on the peanuts book.
Sort of. There was a piece in a rifle magazine called “Happiness is a warm gun” which directly inspired John. The name of the article is based on the peanuts book.
The lyrics to this song are so strong; This was John's reaction, to seeing an advert in a US magazine, that read... "Get ready for the Long Hot Summer, Happiness is a Warm Gun"... The idea that having a gun, to kill people would make you happy, stayed with john..... I also use to wonder how john knew, about working overtime, while in a dream, "lying with his eyes, while his hands are busy working overtime".... And; "Multicoloured Mirrors on his hobnail boots".... the fashion of putting an extra shine on your boots, Military style..... Before we even talk about the guitar.......
Love how John incorporated sexual references so seamlessly. If memory serves me correctly, there is like ten time changes! This is the song that helped to save the Beatles! With all the tension during the White Album sessions. Interestingly, the song wasn’t complete. John was suffering from so many continuous hours playing the guitar, he was finding it hard to play...having to settle on what we know, not what he was aiming for!
Absolutely love your reaction to these great Beatles songs, you totally get them. Would you believe you’ve only scratched the surface? You’re in for one hell of a ride my friend, enjoy!
A unique, trippy Beatles song is "Tomorrow Never Knows". There are two types of people in the world: those who love "Tomorrow Never Knows" and those who haven't heard it.
I believe that I have commented on your reaction to this. The story behind the whole thing- lyrics, innuendos, not to mention (I believe) over 70 takes, the editing, etc. is insane.

What you just listened to is like 53 years old, and You got it brother it's next level shit, I am happy for you that in 2021 you get the experience of discovering this band one song at a time.
I really liked the inspiration for this song. I don't think I fully understand everything this song does as it seems to go into a few different topics but it was inspired by a bit of culture shock they experienced while in the US. They were seated in the waiting room of a music studio looking at magazines when John was struck by the cover of a gun enthusiast magazine that featured a Father and Son smiling at a shooting range and read "Happiness is a warm gun". Although the idea of a Father teaching a Son to use a firearm and bonding over it is or at least was normal in American culture it was a foreign concept to them.
Thom Yorke said this tune inspired him heavily with the early music of radiohead. And 50-odd years later this song is still very weird and out there. Sounds like a modern band
HazeBruv ... you are just describing the phenomenon that the Beatles are from the sky with diamonds even w/o a Lucy. I am old already but it makes me warm that young ppl still detect this very thing. I am happy that I was on a Macca-Concert in Hamburg in 2003. I am unhappy that I never could see Lennon. - If you are interested: They often are compared with Franz Schubert, who only reached 31 years (1797-1828). But he wrote incredible stuff, too.
Once I got stuck on The White Album and listened to it for months. One of the greatest array of songs ever produced. You have many many more great things to explore. Have fun.

One of my 3 fav Beatles songs. I love the message, I love the last part, especially "bang bang shoot shoot" backing vox. Sucha underated tune.
Listening to your excitement reminds me how I felt when I discovered Beatles song I never heard before.
I dig that you're playin Beatles for your boys! Spread the gospel of John, Paul, George and Ringo!
A unique, trippy Beatles song is "Tomorrow Never Knows". There are two types of people in the world: those who love "Tomorrow Never Knows" and those who haven't heard it.
I believe that I have commented on your reaction to this. The story behind the whole thing- lyrics, innuendos, not to mention (I believe) over 70 takes, the editing, etc. is insane.
Check out Yer Blue and Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except for me and my Monkey 🐒. Love the White Album and another great REACTION to the Beatles! Fire, FIRE, FIRE! Call out the Fire Department 🚒🚒🚒🔥🔥
Right on!
♥ that fuzzy mini solo too. One of my fave songs off maybe my fave Beatles album
You make feel good videos, you're funny and express yourself excellently.
Haze cracks me up. He gets such a blast from the Beatles.
This is definitely one of my faves. Of course, the "bang, bang, shoot, shoot" backing vocals are a nod to 50s doo wop.
And they said The Beatles couldn't do that.
Well, they did that.
A totally John song, both Paul and George loved it.
Have fun.
your on the same musical trip, we took 50 years ago.... after a light of a smoke...w/ headphones in hand.....off to never-never land .......its sooo hard not to drink their kool-aid .. and w/ the Beatles ........... A musical vibe of creativity thrived thru-out the 60's,70's,
I don't even think about my favorite album. Every one of their albums are great
There's a movie called, 'Across the Universe'. It's all Beatles music done in an operatic manner to tell a love story. The video part where they do 'Warm Gun' will knock you out! Great movie.
