Plastic tanks do nothing but my tank has that one and lives happy. No water hanges, a little little problem with algae. weekly I clean gravel, glasses and filters (2 small HOB). I don't use ceramic rings or pomice but zeolit (changed monthly) and activated carbon (changed weekly). My tank is full of fishes in total wellness and water is very very clear. There isn't only a way to keep fish tanks, otherwise they would all be the same. Very boring.

@@PrimeTimeAquatics Should I get a more powerful filter for my constant cloudy tank? 2 goldfish and 6 snails and 26 gallons. I'm at a loss. I use an Aqueon 50 gal filter HOB now.
Usually no - most non-aquatic plants need higher concentrations of CO2 than what is found in the water. They also have a hard time managing the amount of water they take in from their roots and leaves and wind up dying.
Hey Jason. What size of a utility sink would you recommend in a fish room? I guess what I am asking is would there be a need for say a double well utility sink or would that be overkill or a poor use of real estate in the room?
J Lathem I’ve never felt I needed anything more than a single sink. Mine is big enough to rinse a large piece of driftwood and lay a 10 gallon flat. It’s also deep enough to put a 5 gallon bucket in without any issues. Been working great so far!

Fluval substrate does get messy. One trick I learned from another aquatic enthusiast (Tanner Serpa via RUclips) is to put patches of Fluval in the spots you plan to plant your plants. Then top it off with gravel/sand of your choice. Then plant your plants. This keeps the mess down by holding a harder layer above it and allows you to have the desired look you want while still having good nutrients for the plants underneath the substrate.

I've done pretty well at keeping plants, but now I have a problem, something has infected my main tank and killed literally all of my fish. The water parameters were all fine and there have been no recent chamges so I've decided to play it safe and dump the substrate and filter media as it could be diseased or something and to me it's not worth the risk. I know I can cook all of the hardscape and ensure that's all safe, but what about plants? So glad this came up as recommended for me! I've got a planted tank and battling algae big time... Thinking of pulling the plug on live plants, but I really believe in an ecosystem approach to tanks and ponds. Another video tonight talked about trimming the plants too. I have the simple plants but I'm thinking I put in way to "fertile" of substrate. Before I switched tanks and used a super nutrient dense soil I had no algae problems. Maybe I need to go back to aquarium gravel...
Hard to say for sure if that is the issue. Maybe if the nutrients are leaching into the water column? Might be worth testing the water to see if that's the case.
My tank is almost primarily gravel and I still have a lot of green algae. It's kind of recent however and mostly because my scheduled timings for light cycles went out so I accidently allow more light then needed as I have to remember when to turn it off. Full Moon Aquatics Holy cow - the spell check must have gotten me on that one. Not cool!! Thanks for catching that. I reviewed this video a 100 times and didn’t catch that geez.
I tried live plants and the Kept on getting covered by brown algae. I used less light hours, didn’t work. I tried more light hours same thing, didn’t work. I’m using plastic plants now. It just got to intense. Yes, I tried root tabs and easy green too. 😞
Few days back i started aquatic plants from seed they have grown 3 inches tall when i can add water ? And is without adding co2 supply will they survive submerged in water ?
"why have live plants" This question should not exist Same reason we dont have plastic fish, we dont walk fake plastic dogs and we dont cuddle plastic cats 🤷♀️
Awesome video! I just found your channel and am brand new to keeping plants. I purchased a bunch of plants from Aquarium Co -Op last month. I’ve got a question... Where can I get Java Moss? Cory doesn’t have it on his site.
Thanks for the video. Very well done. Always good to reach out to the beginners. Thanks and Cheers. p.s. I had to re-subscribe. What's up with RUclips?
Thank you for the video. I want to know what is the problem to my aquarium.....i have a large aguarium , i buy some stuff for these but i have a problem whit him....the fish is dying.....I thank you if help me whit the problem....
I only keep certain decent looking and fish safe fake plants for 2 reasons: easy to toss in a quarantine tank, or to stick under a filter outlet to baffle the flow, at least til i come up w something better like making a simple multi-tiered waterfall baffle since most of my fish arent crazy about turbulent water.
Would like to see a video on powerstrips and cord management and finally times. Its something that I haven't really come across and had to learn the hard way.
Thanks. I have 4 heavily planted tanks, and the plants are not doing so well. I think I'll stop Gravel vacuuming the substrate and order some of that Fertilizer. Cheers.
I cannot tell a lie - I am a plant noob. I've never been able to keep duckweed (really, it always dies off). Java moss and fern work for me, as well as anubias (for last 8 months anyway) Notice nothing rooted? Maybe I always keep the wrong fish. Going to plant my 40b this month - sand - should I use one of those fancy soils and mix it in?. (yep, use easy green, fluval 3.0 or finnex stingray) EnLIGHTen me please.
If they are easy to grow plants specialty substrate isn’t necessary, but may make things easier. If you go sand or gravel, Easy Root Tabs, and eventually fish waste, can supply a lot of the nutrients the plants need.
I need help I can’t seem to keep plants alive I don’t know what’s happening I can’t find easy green on Amazon or anywhere please help me I love you showing your videos
I just received a live plant Ludwigia Repens "Rubin", i have 2 stems with little amounts of roots, mostly leaves, will the leaves take root. Purchased on ebay.
this video was very helpful in informing me about plants. Yes i’ve heard they are hard to take care of but that wasn’t the case! Thank you so much for clearing that up. I really appreciate it and your awesome!
If you are looking for soil to do a dirted tank, I'm not sure what is the best since I haven't done a dirted tank. Otherwise, I use either standard aquarium sand or gravel in almost all of my tanks.
I have a moderately planted tank and I am having an issue with my fish pulling up the plants and now they have started eating them. I want to find out which fish is the one/ones doing this so I can put them in another tank. I have clown and Yoyo loaches, odessa, black ruby, and red panda barbs, assorted rainbows, red eye tetras, EBJD, gold nugget and clown pleco, and 6 cory cats. I have a lot of money tied up in plants and trying to get them growing have a high tech system so I need help so they will grow.
Melissa Jordan If I had to put money on it I would say the loaches and EBJD are probably the culprits. The loaches probably aren’t eating the plants, but can certainly be digging them up. The only fish I see in the group that may actually eat the plants is maybe the EBJD. If it’s sword plants that are being damaged it could also be the plecos.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics I figured it was the loaches digging them up but the eating of the crypto stems on the leaves are what are being eaten. The EBJD is fairly new to tank and still a little guy had him about a month. Im waiting till the end of the month when I get a 75 gal tank and will leave the loaches out of it when I transfer plants over. Thank you for the reply.
This CO2 thing sounds like a pain. Would the fish respirating plus me blowing through an air-stone be enough? Or maybe add in a splash of some club soda?
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Ok I found them thanks. Another question, do you know if regular LED's will work or does it have to be Plant type LED's specifically for plants?
I have kept aquariums since I was a kid (63 now) started my first live plant aquarium always had plastic plants. Question is when I purchase live plants that are already planted in the the little bucket should I removed the bucket or just insert the whole thing into the grave?
Jennifer Holden I remove the plants from the bucket. Planting into the gravel depends on the plant (careful of rhizomes if Anubis, which should not be buried), but yes, if the plant roots into the substrate I place the roots into the gravel.
Hi im still new to taking care of fish~ i was wondering, i have a gravel base. Which plants would you recommend for me to grow? Also, if i do keep plants, how would this change the way i clean the tank (gravel vacs etc.)
my plants just disintegrate ... I change water, give them feed, liquid co2, and substrate tablets... and... brown and die... and these are just simple easy plants....
Hello Mr Jason, Happy New Year 2024. Thank you for this video. I am starting a 29 Gallon fish tank. For a first time I would like to have live plants 🌱 in my Aquarium and for substrate I am planning to use Sand and Not gravel. My question to you is the next one. Do I have to put soil at the bottom and sand on Top in order to have a good foundation ? Or it is ok only with Sand. By the way, I am using Fresh Water. Thank you and have a good day. Kind regards, Angie. 🙋🏻♀️
Hi Jason I have been watching lot of plant videos like this but I can’t get Anubius or Java fern to grow in my African Cichlid tank & I cannot figure out why? My Anubius haven’t added a leaf since going in 4-5 months ago, nor will the Java fern grow. I add recommended does of Fluval Floursish each week. I just can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong? I’m not burying the rhizome. My parameters are: pH 8.2, Nitrates never go above 20ppm, White & Blue LED’s on 8 hours a day (4hrs & 4hrs morning & night). I seem to be doing everything as suggested but still no joy?
@primetimeaquatics I just set up my 29 gallon lake tanganyikan tank no fish just 3 myst snail tap wtr w/ prime and flourish carib sea arragonite sunstrateand planted some java fern on rocks they're doing ok and egeria densa not doing ok and I'm not sure what's happening but the egeria densa is yellowing browning and melting away why is that. Parameters. Temp 78 Ph 8.2-8.5 78 degrees gh 100-140 kh 120-200 no ammonia nitrate or nitrite. Thank you if you answer this. Great informational video about easy plants
Great question. I have had them work in some cases, but in other cases not so much. I have found that the kits labeled as "plant LED" usually do an ok job of growing low light plants.
I have a fully cycle 8 months 30 gallon aquarium with fish, 1/4 garvel heater 27 Celsius pump and sump no fish lost. I have planted it 2days ago when can I take the pump and sump away.thanks
Prime time aquatics Where can I find the nat geo sand please. I’ve been looking around for it and had no luck so far. Have they stopped making it? Any alternative suggestions?
Been using Easy Green for about a month now. Turned my plants around. I have a moderately planted medium light 29g. I spread my treatments out during the week so 1 pump daily in the in morning about 10-15 minutes after feeding the fish.
I want to keep Rams. Which prefer hot water than other community fish. But want plants with it. Will Java Fern and normalother plants work? Like anubias and the general plants used in most Aquarium?
❤ hello my friend this is Missy from Michigan I have a 10 or 20 gallon tank it's a 10 gal tank it is a 10 gallon tank and I have about four fish four to six fish and I was wondering what type of plants I need to use your friend missing from Michigan oh I'm sorry did I mention that it's a freshwater tank
Hi J my name is Trevor form SA Gordins bay I just watched a video on your mbuna cichlids and I love all your videos I noticed on 1 or 2 of your fish a small white spek. I to have on on 1 or 2 of my fish and nobody can tell me what it is. It is not on the fins or gillls. Can you help me??
I have a very basic question about the live plants...should I remove them from the pots they came in or just busy the pots in the substrate? I love the way you have some house plants across the top of some of your tanks.
Good question. If the plants came in the plastic pots I would remove them. Usually the pot has a gel-type material in it that shouldn't go into the tank.
Watching some old videos to past the time. So Professor the new used shrimp tank as I said the LFS only had two female and two male shrimp . Do you think a colony will get going with this small a start? Here’s where the plants come in one nice crypt for centerpiece moss on one end and wood drift and cholla on other with leafs mixed in,any suggestions? Tank is a ten.
Absolutely - as long as you have a mix they should populate the tank over time! Shrimp aren't picky when it comes to plants. Anubias nana, jungle val (but you would have to trim it back), you could float some hornwort - I would keep the plants easy until everything really settles in.
Don't forget to rinse and clean your new plants. How to disinfect them from pet store diseases. I just lost a large, chocolate veiltail fancy goldfish. 6 1/2 yrs old. His tank was great. It was those plants I got a couple weeks ago. I'm sad.

1:33 the tank is a bit over stocked 😣 hope this isn't perminent as all the other tanks look great.
No, that's a grow out tank for fry. They move to bigger grow out bins as they get larger.
Just discoverd your channel!
These video's are straight to the point no nonsense but still a lot of information. Thank you!
Thank you for being here!
How about the kit LED/Hood combo's that came with my aquariums....dump them or try some plants and see......??
Depends on the light, but we have used them to grow low light plants like anubias and even crypts.
Why do people try to speak over music....I'm gone.
Great video, I finally took the jump into planted tanks and living it. All my tanks now have plants I can’t turn back.
That's how I was too! They add so much to the ecosystem.
If they are aquatic you should be fine.
"why have live plants"
This question should not exist
Same reason we dont have plastic fish, we dont walk fake plastic dogs and we dont cuddle plastic cats 🤷♀️
Awesome video! I just found your channel and am brand new to keeping plants. I purchased a bunch of plants from Aquarium Co -Op last month. I’ve got a question... Where can I get Java Moss? Cory doesn’t have it on his site.
Craig Coss it’s usually available on both aquabid and amazon (as well as eBay). Just make sure the sellers have great reviews!
Thanks for the video. Very well done. Always good to reach out to the beginners. Thanks and Cheers. p.s. I had to re-subscribe. What's up with RUclips?
Thank you! And I'm glad you're back. : -)
How long are your lights off between the 4.5 lights on cycles.
They run from 6:30am - 9am and again from 4pm - 10:30pm
@@PrimeTimeAquatics ...thats a 2.5 hours and a 6.5...not two 4.5 hour cycles.
Great idea!
Thanks. I have 4 heavily planted tanks, and the plants are not doing so well. I think I'll stop Gravel vacuuming the substrate and order some of that Fertilizer. Cheers.
MacManifest Should help!
(yep, use easy green, fluval 3.0 or finnex stingray)
EnLIGHTen me please.
I would probably float them for a while until they start to send roots down?
They will i got a bundle a few weeks ago
@@divinequeen100 Thanks, i was not that patient and picked up a bunch at petsmart where i could see first.
this video was very helpful in informing me about plants. Yes i’ve heard they are hard to take care of but that wasn’t the case! Thank you so much for clearing that up. I really appreciate it and your awesome!
Thanks for watching!
give a brief video about maintance plants
No matter what plants I get they just die I'll keep a look out for the plants that you mentiond tho maby that will help
Brother kindly let me know How And Where i can find aqurium soil or it's alternative
I don't use CO2 and have no issues growing the plants I grow. Fish respiration helps.
What type of lights do you use?
Mostly Finnex Stingrays.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics is that the brand ? LED? or what?
Great questions. Jungle val, crypts, anubias, java fern are all great options. Once I add plants I don't gravel vac around the root systems.
my plants just disintegrate ... I change water, give them feed, liquid co2, and substrate tablets... and... brown and die... and these are just simple easy plants....
Maybe water hardness and/or pH is off?
How do you keep plants in your fish tank?
Close the lid so they can't get out.
Just had to make this joke!
Thanks for the video! *thumbs up*
Aqua Peet Nice! 😀
Can you use any light for the plants or does it have to be certain specification?
It depends on the plants. Most beginner plants do fine with the LED lights sized for the aquarium you are using.
Have fun!
Greetings from Great Britain just watched this and like your style of delivery and actual facts straight and true thank you
Thank you for being here!
I live in a really small attic with a very small window with very little light. Can someone tell me the best low light plant for bettas?
I like anubius, java fern and java moss!
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Thank you.
Hi Jason
I have been watching lot of plant videos like this but I can’t get Anubius or Java fern to grow in my African Cichlid tank & I cannot figure out why? My Anubius haven’t added a leaf since going in 4-5 months ago, nor will the Java fern grow. I add recommended does of Fluval Floursish each week. I just can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong?
I’m not burying the rhizome.
My parameters are: pH 8.2, Nitrates never go above 20ppm, White & Blue LED’s on 8 hours a day (4hrs & 4hrs morning & night).
I seem to be doing everything as suggested but still no joy?
I have found both those plants grow slowly for me. As long as they aren't dying I don't think you are doing anything wrong.
It might not like the water parameters?
I’m so impressed with your videos. Great educational video. I plan on adding some plants. Thxs 👍
Very cool!
just starting out thanks going to get some plants today for the tank ive had running for a week now!
Good luck!
Will low light plants do ok with the new cheap LEDs that come with tank kits?
Great question. I have had them work in some cases, but in other cases not so much. I have found that the kits labeled as "plant LED" usually do an ok job of growing low light plants.
I think I love to have krips we don't have them in Taiwan how she did
I just got into plants. Why do there stems start to turn white
Depends on the plant, but sometimes that's the stem starting to die back.
Does that mean the plant is dieing
Does that mean the plant is dying. Do you add fertilizer to your tanks

I dig my own in our of local creeks ... I do a Quarantine them and med them .
I have a fully cycle 8 months 30 gallon aquarium with fish, 1/4 garvel heater 27 Celsius pump and sump no fish lost. I have planted it 2days ago when can I take the pump and sump away.thanks
If you are looking to go filterless it can work if the tank is very lightly stocked. For average tank stocking levels it can be problematic.
Prime time aquatics Where can I find the nat geo sand please. I’ve been looking around for it and had no luck so far. Have they stopped making it? Any alternative suggestions?
I think they have. I have been using Caribsea and like it as well.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics thanks so much!😀
Been using Easy Green for about a month now. Turned my plants around. I have a moderately planted medium light 29g. I spread my treatments out during the week so 1 pump daily in the in morning about 10-15 minutes after feeding the fish.
Very nice to hear!
I want to keep Rams. Which prefer hot water than other community fish. But want plants with it. Will Java Fern and normalother plants work? Like anubias and the general plants used in most Aquarium?
They usually work fine given the rams do well at around 80 degrees.
Never knew Bill burr was into the hobby 🧐
Please tell me what type of fish is the one on the left with glowing fin 9:06
thanks for the advice
❤ hello my friend this is Missy from Michigan I have a 10 or 20 gallon tank it's a 10 gal tank it is a 10 gallon tank and I have about four fish four to six fish and I was wondering what type of plants I need to use your friend missing from Michigan oh I'm sorry did I mention that it's a freshwater tank
Anubias nana petite can work. Buce can also be a nice addition - sam ewith hornwort.
Hi J my name is Trevor form SA Gordins bay
I just watched a video on your mbuna cichlids and I love all your videos
I noticed on 1 or 2 of your fish a small white spek.
I to have on on 1 or 2 of my fish and nobody can tell me what it is.
It is not on the fins or gillls.
Can you help me??
Sometimes they get nicked up a little in the tank. Usually doesn’t impact the fish and often heals over time.
Prime Time Aquatics thank you!
Don't forget to rinse and clean your new plants. How to disinfect them from pet store diseases. I just lost a large, chocolate veiltail fancy goldfish. 6 1/2 yrs old. His tank was great. It was those plants I got a couple weeks ago. I'm sad.
Sorry to hear you lost him.
Thanks my teacher killed my fishes this helped
I didn't know Bill Burr is into aquariums
Very informative for a noob. Question re liquid fertilizer- will it kill shrimp?
It depends on the fertilizer. Usually the bottle will say if it is invertebrate safe.
Your video is the most informative I’ve found so far. Thank you for all the tips!
Thank you!
I want to switch over to live plants. What gravel do you recommend?
The gravel you have most likely ok.
I got 2 guppies and 2 swordtails. What kind of plants do you think work best with those types of fish? Preferably beginner plants. Thanks
Just about any beginner plant will work - anubias, crypts, jungle val, hornwort, wisteria, water sprite, guppy grass!
@@PrimeTimeAquatics thank you so much!
