After watching this, I'm considering improving my betta fish's setup. I was thinking about going from a 10-gallon tank with a regular filter to a 20-gallon tank with a sponge filter. I kinda want to improve the aquascaping a bit, maybe by adding a carpeting plant. I might use the 10-gallon to make my younger cousin a cool fish tank as he likes whatever I like.
I know some people will say "it's just a fish", but he's my fish.

I get so excited when we catch a glimpse of the lowboy molly tank! Your advice for new hobbyists is great, and I'd add one more tip: DON'T PANIC! It's easy when you first get into the hobby to see a detail or an element you've never seen before, immediately assume the worst, and start throwing meds/chemicals/radical water changes at something that's not actually a problem. It's a case of a little knowledge without experience being a potentially dangerous thing. Notice, observe, research, ask questions...but DON'T PANIC!

Just want to say “”THANK YOU!” I’m in the preliminary stages of considering whether or not I might want to keep fish (again- I had a couple in a 2-gallon tank years ago, and throughout my childhood I watched my dad keep an aquarium he enjoyed), and I can not tell you how helpful this video is in guiding me to do a personal inventory & reality check about my abilities, expectations, and preparedness. For the sake of the lives of the fish that are at stake when we humans make these pet-keeping decisions, I want to celebrate & thank you for this public service video! I’m going to peep your other videos as I continue to evaluate whether or not fish keeping is REALLY something I can accept responsibility for at this time in my current home space. All the best to you, and thanks again for sharing/educating!!💐💐💐

This was a great video. Before I bought my 150 and 90 gallon I knew I wanted to keep my wet pets like discus as you probably remember. I did ALOT of research on how to keep them. I learned with these fish they need more TLC. I was on YOU TUBE collecting all the information I could possibly get. I was also honest with myself whether I would have time to dedicate to maintain them. You keep me learning about fish care, filtration and so much MORE. I put my tanks right in front of my couch and out of direct sun light. I never mentioned the glass fish you got are cool.😎

I also suggest that new fish keepers consider the longevity of a fish breed. Some only live a couple of years while others live for 20 plus years, that's older than most dog breeds. If you can't see yourself spending 10 plus years looking at the same fish then you might want to choose something with a shorter span. I know in this hobby it is "normal" to trade off fish or rehome them, it's just not in my nature.

Your videos have been a great source of information to me since I'm new to the hobby as of April 2020. Before setting up my aquarium I called our local water authority and talked to their chemist about the type of disinfectant they use, which is chlorine only. Ken, their chemist, spent some time talking with me about our local water parameters such as pH, dissolved minerals, salinity, turbidity, etc. I live roughly six miles from the southern shore of Lake Ontario which is our water source. It was a very educational discussion. I would suggest hobbyist consider calling their local water authority. They may reach out to talk to you. Happy Holidays, Dan

In the 80s I had a big interest in aquatics so I read every piece of text that came onto the public domain with reading every fish book in library's near and far but still within the UK even visited sales so I could speak with others with the same interests as I but over the years a;d habitats I stopped but still kept an interest, and last month out of the blue a carer mentioned about her tropical tank and setup within earshot of me so we began talking fish and water paramiters to which she realized I'm not just a name or face and she sparked my interest again and this is why I'm on the net picking at fish topics educationally with RUclips for visual help something not available in the 80s.

These videos for beginners are so good and informative. But i havent seen anyone (not just this one) inform new fish keepers the importance of buying, setting up (or plan a separate area) for a quarintine tank in addition to your main tank. I think experienced fish keepers assume everyone just automatically know this and how important it is for intorducing new fish and/or treating sick fish.

That's better for the fish too. Easy access to knowledge on the internet should negate mistakes that may been more common before the Google age. Acclimatizing new fish is one example.
How many new hobbyists knew then that you have to float bag on surface for half hour to avoid thermal shock and gradually add water to bag to avoid nitrate shock. on the new fish? Most know now thanks to Google

Once they started fighting i did my own research, finding their super territorial and need large tanks for two or more. Upgrade my tank, the whole 9 yards for a 40 gallon tank, before one pushed yhe other out still before the other died a week later.

I used to have a really sweet tank as a kid, grew one suckered from a babe to 6 8 inches long. Won a goldfish at the local fair and it brought back a disease that wiped them all out.
    Lesson learned the hard way

My uncle started me with owning fish and maintaining them when I first started I hated cleaning out the tank and rocks and unhooking everything blahhhh as I got older I feel in love and appreciate fish and watching them and careing for them

I just bought 2.5 gal fish tank literally just now. Didnt know its not beginner friendly, this would be my 1st time doing this. I just want goldfish in the house since no hairy pets allowed in condo unit. Subscribed so I would know how to maintain my fish and fish tank.

Glad you are here. For a 2.5 gallon maybe try a betta instead? The goldfish can get huge! :-)

It's a lifetime commitment..when we bring a pet home whether it's a cat 🐈, a dog 🐶🐕 or a fish 🐠🐟 we got to see that it lives a good life 🧬 right to the end ..many give up halfway and it's quite sad to see so many selling their huge 75 gallon to 6 feet tanks on the online marketplace when their interest wanes

Wow still learning beginner stuff thanks Jason I struggle with maintaining 82 degrees in my 20 high. Didn’t consider it being at the back door would be an issue. It sits right at our back door with heavy traffic

I do think my fish keeping may be temporary...until I get into marine biology!!! I'm currently an ocean loving teenager who lives no where near the ocean😮‍💨 I'm currently pretty broke but I hope to eventually have salt water fish😁 I really hope I can get into this hobby for the meanwhile and your videos really help❤

I like the 40 gal breeder tank the aquarium stores use to display their fish. Huge surface area for oxygen.
