Hey baby girl! Just been out on my bike, my motorcycling is important to me, you know that. You know the best part of the journey? Riding that steel horse back home to you.
Must 'v been some ten or twelve years ago when I saw them play live in Verviers, Belgium at The Spirit Of 66. Great concert! Pampered menial was en is seriously underrated! Julia and Late November are classics.
But all of them are really good. I was a BeBop fan from the first time I saw them supporting Cockney Rebel and saw them live many times. One of the all time greats. Nice to see Modern Music on here.
I love love love Bare Trees. Thanks for including that and Bebop Deluxe. But no Bridge of Sighs by Robin Trower? He usually gets overlooked but that’s a great album.
Great picks! Also worth adding to the list are Warhorse (debut), Bloodrock, Johnny Winter(The Progressive Blues Experiment), Budgie (debut), ZZ Top's First Album and T2 (It'll All Work Out In Boomland). Nice to see Captain Beyond on the list. Criminally overlooked. Cheers!
I agree, and I have most of those in my collection. I was happy to see you had Journey’s first album and played a piece of their best song, Kahoutek. As has been said, this list could be very long (though I doubt it could be endless). I would add: - Triumvirate - Illusions on a Double Dimple - Thunderclap Newman - Aliotta, Haynes, and Jeremiah - Lake Shore Drive - Brewer and Shipley - Tarkio - Spirit -Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus - Steve Hillage - Live Herald - Christine McVie - The Legendary Christine Perfect Album - New York Dolls - first two albums - The Jim Carroll Band - Catholic Boy I could continue.
The debut double album by Manassas. Great songs, totally pro musicianship, and the guitar work, wow. BTW thanks for including the Captain Beyond debut album.
I ended up getting this album by default because I forgot to return my record club form back by the due date. Best mistake I ever made, a brilliant album.
Secret Treaties, Marquee Moon and Rattus Norvegicus are in my top 20 favourite albums of all time so thanks for mentioning them. Barclay James Harvest - Octoberon Horslips - Aliens Nils Lofgren - Cry Tough Sensational Alex Harvey Band(Without Alex) - Fourplay Graham Parker And The Rumour - Heat Treatment Dr Feelgood - Malpractice Bachman-Turner Overdrive - Street Action Hot Tuna - Hoppkorv Paice Ashton Lord - Malice In Wonderland Wishbone Ash - New England Camel - Rain Dances Pat Travers - Makin' Magic Sparks - Big Beat Steve Forbert - Jackrabbit Slim Streetwalkers - Red Card Santana - Borboletta Sutherland Brothers & Quiver - Slipstream Uriah Heep - Innocent Victim Black Oak Arkansas - High On The Hog Boxer - Absolutely
If any Jethro Tull album is underrated it’s definitely “Benefit”. i love the album! I like the US version with “Teacher”. I love the first 2 songs are gold “With You There To Help Me” and to me the stand out i track that i personally relate to “Nothing To Say”. “Son” and “To Cry You a Song” are AWSOME! i got the CD with the UK track listing but “Teacher” is included as a bonus track.
Don't think any of the 70's Tull albums were underrated. After 69's Stand Up they gained a lot of traction. By 79's Stormwatch they were maybe running out of steam after being so active in that decade.
Silk Torpedo by Pretty Things is one of THE underrated/ignored album's full stop. It's quintessentially 70's but with a host of brilliantly quirky and diverse ideas. Genius.
Secret Treaties by Blue Oyster Cult? Good grief, Secret Treaties is when BOC really started hitting their stride and produced what is arguably their best album to date.
At the Sound of the Bell from Pavlov's Dog is equally great. I would also recommend: Spirit - Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus Dennis Wilson - Pacific Ocean Blue T2 - It'll all work out in boom land Beach Boys - Surf's Up (or Holland) Todd Rundgren's Utopia Steve Hackett - Spectral Morning Can - Future Days Nick Drake - Bryter Layter The Stooges - Fun House But my No 1 would be Big Star. This album should have been huge.
I am not sure all these are really underrated. There are lots I don't know that may be, but some of these are very highly rated, such as Trick of the Tale, Rattus Norvegicus, Farewell to Kings, Marquee Moon etc. I agree regarding Stormwatch, love this. Also Comminque is definitely my favourite Dire Straits album Another one I would add is Yes, Going for the One, which is one of my favourite Yes albums despite what others say.
The most under-rated band ever has to be Budgie, absolutely brilliant, yet no commercial success. Squawk, Never Turn Your Back On A Friend, and In For The Kill are all fantastic albums. Other bands and albums not to forget: Man - Back Into The Future, Barclay James Harvest - Early Morning Onwards, Comus - First Utterance, Here & Now - Give & Take, John Martyn - Solid Air, Kevin Ayers - The Confessions of Dr Dream & Other Stories, Roy Harper - Flat Baroque and Berserk, Steve Hillage - L, The Groundhogs - Split, The Incredible String Band - Earthspan, The Sensational Alex Harvey Band - Next, Wishbone Ash - Live Dates

A great "unknown" is Today by It's a Beautiful Day. Great vocals, great songs, great guitarwork. Future Games is another great by Fleetwood Mac featuring Danny Kirwan, Christine McVie and Bob Welch. Jethro Tull's Thick as a Brick has always gotten the attention but the following album, A Passion Play is just as good if not better. And when talking about the greatest Live albums of all time, you can't leave out Johnny Winter And Live featuring Rick Derringer as well as the first and only Genesis Live album with Peter Gabriel. And popular at the time but unjustly overlooked is Scheherazade and Other Stories by Renaissance. Robin Trower's Long Misty Days is easily his 2nd best album.
Supertramp, Journey, Fleetwood Mac, Black Sabbath, Rush, Jefferson Starship (later Starship), The Knack, Styx, Journey, The Who, Genesis, Blue Oyster Cult, Aerosmith, Kansas, and Dire Straits are some of my favorite bands. A lot of great music came out in the 1970s.
It would be cool to use this type of video to advise some less known stuff, there are tons of psychedelic, garage, kraut and European rock albums that would deserve a chance
So pleased to see someone who appreciates BeBop Deluxe. I have a couple of their albums including "Live in the Air Age" with the second disc being all white. Bare Trees is criminally under appreciated as some very good material before Fleetwood Mac went pop.
Have 16 of them in my collection and put forward 1970 No Dice - Badfinger, A Song For Me - Family, Thank Christ For The Bomb - Groundhogs 1971 The House on the Hill - Audience, Ballad of a Simple Man - Gravy Train, Never Never Land - Pink Faries
I am inspired to make my list too 1 Gong - Shamal 2 Water - The Second Day 3 Alquin - Nobody Can Wait Forever 4 Kevin Coyne - Dynamite Daze 5 Cuby & The Blizzards - Sometimes 6 The Rattles - The Witch 7 Kayak - The Royal Bed Bouncer 8 Sweet - Desolation Boulevard 9 Sparks - Kimono My House 10 Todd Rundgren - Todd Rundgren's Utopia
Gene Clark has been one of the most overlooked and underappreciated musicians by mainstream music afficiandos and media. All the way from The Byrd's, through Dillard and Clark to his swan song with Carla Olsen - his artistry was peerless.
Although I enjoy the majority of your list, the one I totally agree with is The Knack. I've always feit they were the most underrated band I've heard. Musically explosive and tight. Loved their lyrics on every song. Some were actually very funny.
I would love to know who compiles these lists and what do they use to guage what is under rated(or over rated for that matter) Trick of the Tail was a No 3 & spent 36+ weeks in the charts.Likewise The Who by Numbers was a Top Tenner and sold well.I bought both and wasn't disappointed, which is more than can be said for some of the others on the list.
I may have made a mistake with some choices, but my objective in the video was to choose albums that are not mentioned much in these lists that we see out there.
I probably bought more LP's in the 70's than at any other time and only bought one album off this list (Television - Marquee Moon (1977). Personally if I like an album I don't give a hoot if it's over or under rated. Oh, I had the Strangler's too BUT surely that's NOT under rated ???? Who decide's if an album is Under or Over Rated anyway ??????? PS. The only Supertramp LP I liked was their first, Indelibly Stamped....
The ones in this video that I know I concur with wholeheartedly--with a few exceptions--and the ones I don't i'm checking out immediately! My two cents would be... Fighting, Thin Lizzy Makin' Magic, Pat Travers Shots from a Cold Nightmare, Moon Martin Stand Back, April Wine Give Us a Wink, Sweet Stampede, The Doobies
I would have swapped out _A Farewell to Kings_ in favour of _Caress of Steel_ because of "The Necromancer". Alex gets into some serious proto-shred on that. 🤩
I turned 21 in 1970 so I was there and the great thing about the late sixties and into the 70’s was there was something for everyone no matter what your musical tastes. Underrated is such a subjective concept unless you were a exec expecting big sales and didn’t get your wish fulfilled. It was a most singular time…
interesting. i had heard of 80% of those groups, own other albums of 50% of the ones i knew of. and own 3 of the ones mentioned. pampered menial is an absolute standout!
How about dust from a dry camel and hard attack. Bloodrock DOA. Budgie Sky High percentage. Star Castle debut. Gypsy debut. The strawbs hero and heroine. Focus moving waves. Stanley Clarke school days. ELP pictures at an exhibition. There are so many great albums that displayed exceptional musicianship from that early 1970s era I could probably go on all day so that's just a small example of a few. Definitely an era which elevated Rock and made people sit up and take notice of the Great musicianship and virtuosity these groups had.😮😊
Captain Beyond S/T , Get Your Wings , Secret Treaties , Marque Moon are all 5 star lps. Im not sure they belong on the list. I think Future Games is better than Bare Trees and therefore should be used instead as the example for Fleetwood Mac. Nice list of music overall.
From this list I pick ; Captain Beyond Kansas Journey I recommend Chicken Shack Imagination lady Hot Tuna American choice Mahogany Rush Strange universe
Some of the bands album's are not underrated at all, like Ratus norvegicus, trick of the tail, communiqué... The others are really underrated.. and very good most of them.
Wind and Wuthering Todd Rundgrens Utopia Obscured by Clouds Time and a Word Relayer Going for the One Tormato Lizard Starless & Bible Black Diamond Dogs Lodger Caress of Steel The Snow Goose Moonmadness In a Glass House Free Hand Can't buy a Thrill Katy Lied Queen II Spectres (BÖC) Ocean (Eloy) ... To name some
As a person not born in this era who is searching for the great music of the ‘70s, I would concur they would be underrated as the albums most listen to are the more famous albums from the big groups like Queen, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, etc. They are still popular due to the fact radio still plays the famous songs from the big bands. The songs and albums mentioned in this video are no longer played on the radio if they ever were played in its day is unknown to me. I watch videos like this to learn of the lost songs of the past. I’ve never heard of these songs and a lot of these bands. Only those of the era will remember who they are. You ask people born later like myself would only name the famous bands and songs that are still played today. I have searched and learned of some bands no longer popular, but that’s only because I’m actually searching for them. In my opinion they are definitely underrated.
The word "underrated" differs greatly when looking at music from completely different time periods. I'm sixty years mold, so seeing some of these classics, which are beloved by my generation, makes it hard to see them as underrated. But, as you stated, if you are coming into classic rock as a young adult, the perspective changes a lot! Perspective is huge when it comes to society and culture.....HUGE! Best to you and keep it loud!
Thanks for including Pavlov’s Dog. It’s still an amazing record.
Hey baby girl! Just been out on my bike, my motorcycling is important to me, you know that. You know the best part of the journey? Riding that steel horse back home to you.

All the Be Bop Deluxe albums are underrated !!
Definately ! I bought all of them at the time, plus a few singles "Ships in the night" how good was that ?
Absolutely bang on Bill Nelson one of the greatest guitarists ever was lucky to see BBD Free Trade Hall Mcr 1976
But all of them are really good. I was a BeBop fan from the first time I saw them supporting Cockney Rebel and saw them live many times. One of the all time greats. Nice to see Modern Music on here.
Bo show biznes też był pod kontrolą pejsaty ch
Futurama … always in my top 10 albums of all time
No way is Trick of the Tail underrated. Considered by prog rock fans as one of the finest albums ever made.
The first 3 Albums after the lamb lies down on broadway, were really good albums. I sort of left them after that... Abit to top of the pops,, imp.
No Genesis album is underrated and especially ATOTT, which is in their top five.
Captain Beyond was a fantastic album.
I've been Dancing Madly Backwards ever since I purchased it. And, it still has the plastic hologram on it. Great music from Capricorn records!
Sufficiently Breathless & Dawn Explosion too!!
Yes Yes one of the best albumns ever.
I love love love Bare Trees. Thanks for including that and Bebop Deluxe. But no Bridge of Sighs by Robin Trower? He usually gets overlooked but that’s a great album.

- Spirit -Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus
- Steve Hillage - Live Herald
- Christine McVie - The Legendary Christine Perfect Album
- New York Dolls - first two albums
- The Jim Carroll Band - Catholic Boy
I could continue.
Atomic Rooster for sure, one of my fav bands nobody talks enough about.
They are great.
They were best when Chris Farlowe was with them; compare the album version of Black Snake with the Farlowe studio version on RUclips.
Spot on.
Still have this album 🎉
The debut double album by Manassas. Great songs, totally pro musicianship, and the guitar work, wow. BTW thanks for including the Captain Beyond debut album.

Benefit is definitely underrated and far superior to Stormwatch.
Tull never got any credit.. Everybody playing yes.. Elp...Sabbath at the time.

70_78 some of the best albums of ang decade.
Silk Torpedo by Pretty Things is one of THE underrated/ignored album's full stop. It's quintessentially 70's but with a host of brilliantly quirky and diverse ideas. Genius.
Badfinger is still underrated
They were a great power pop band
I've never heard of A Farewell To Kings being mentioned as underrated as it's always one of the best that Rush fans love and to me, their magnum opus.
Secret Treaties by Blue Oyster Cult? Good grief, Secret Treaties is when BOC really started hitting their stride and produced what is arguably their best album to date.
I'd definitely include their debut LP and the follow-up Tyranny & Mutation.
Rattus arguably the one and only punk-prog LP. A masterpiece. Nice to see Stormwatch also get a mention.
Thousands and thousands of underrated records in the '70...so many prog bands from almost every country of the world...
At the Sound of the Bell from Pavlov's Dog is equally great. I would also recommend:
Spirit - Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus
Dennis Wilson - Pacific Ocean Blue
T2 - It'll all work out in boom land
Beach Boys - Surf's Up (or Holland)
Todd Rundgren's Utopia
Steve Hackett - Spectral Morning
Can - Future Days
Nick Drake - Bryter Layter
The Stooges - Fun House
But my No 1 would be Big Star. This album should have been huge.
Yeah, Big Star influenced many indie bands such as The Replacements, R.E.M. and Teenage Fanclub
Agreed about Black Sabbath's album Technical Ecstasy! but for me the most underrated album from the 70s was Golden Earrings album Moontan.
Sabbath bloody Sabbath and Sabotage they were at there peak.same with genesis with the lamb lies down on broadway.
And sabbath bloody Sabbath and Sabotage... They were at there peak.
Yes!
Moontan has some great songs on it. Candy's going bad for starters. I dont need to mention their most famous song

Captain Beyond RULES
Uriah Heep's Demons & Wizards. Forget underrated. Shocking how this is not considered one of the GREATEST albums from that era.

100% on Man of Miracles. Young Man alone is worth the price of admission. Thanks for this list!
Good list. Iron Butterfly, 'Metamorphosis' is another seriously underrated overlooked album.
I was in high school during the 70s and I thought The Knack was stupid, they were one of those bands people either really liked or hated

Got quite a few of these. The Strawbs "Hero & Heroine" should be on the list.
SO much great ProgRock back then! Yes being my favorite.

Plenty of those in my collection still.😊 especially be bop deluxe and atomic rooster.
Some bands albums not underrated just unappreciated
It the feeling maybe of the album not being as good as there last one.
Another great one is Growers of Mushroom by Leaf Hound. Such a heavy record from 1970/71.
Golden Earring "Switch" and the second Pavolov s dog lp

Technical ecstasy...drugs,alcohol,touring and fatigue....yet they managed to deliver a very nice album,a different sound of Sabbbath but still cool

Hi, does Gene Clark "no other" fall in this category? I came across it in early 2000, I find it marvellous, it's one of my most listened to albums!
The great G. C.

Modern Music. What a great album!!
Wow! I have every one of those vinyl records except for Mom’s Apple Pie.

Rock On: Humble Pie. I would have said Smokin' by Humble Pie, but I think that one gets a lot of recognition.
Good call. Rock On's a great, great album.
Spaceship Earth - Sugarloaf
Paris 1919 - John Cale
Yeah, John Cale such an influencial musician, producer and arranger, yet so underrated, it beggars belief.
Spaceship Earth - totally excellent: musicianship, songwriting, harmony vocals. Why does that one continually get underlooked?
interesting. i had heard of 80% of those groups, own other albums of 50% of the ones i knew of. and own 3 of the ones mentioned. pampered menial is an absolute standout!
I think the list would be much longer with pop, Disco and Soul too ❤️🎶
I don't know much about other musical genres.
Lace and Whiskey is fantastic all the way through.
Captain Beyond must have been an Influence on Aerosmith. Fantastic Album.
Love should be there somewhere.

Some of the bands album's are not underrated at all, like Ratus norvegicus, trick of the tail, communiqué... The others are really underrated.. and very good most of them.
Angel-S/T, 1975 POMP Epic Masterwork!!!

I remember Kla-Atu being touted as “The New Beatles” in early 1977.
There was a rumor that they were the Beatles and they secretly reunited
What criteria did you use to determine that these albums are underrated?
Strangely enough not one of Stray's first 3 albums is there.
Good band, saw them early 70s.
Gone the way to fight the war, gone just like his daddy's O.
They made a new album in 2023, positively criticized
I believe that I saw Hounds open for Foghat at the Hampton Coliseum in about ‘78
aah i remember almost all of these!
