- For some, medications can play a crucial role in managing various mental health conditions and in improving quality of life. However, as our understanding of medicine advances, so too does our knowledge of the efficacy and potential risks associated with certain drugs commonly used for mental illnesses. Mark delves into the art and science of de-prescribing - the process of thoughtfully reducing or discontinuing medications for mental health conditions - with psychiatrist Dr. Mark Horowitz and cardiologist Dr. Christy Huff.
Thanks for having our director on this fantastic podcast!
Our pleasure!
I love this! Makes me think about Mad Pride actually, and the push to say we're not broken, we're not wrong for feeling the ways we feel and don't need to be cured. I also think a lot about the role of psychiatry in cycles of abuse, where abuse victims are told they're just ill, that something is wrong with them, and instead of getting justice get further problems inflicted onto them. And it's difficult, because abuse victims/survivors frequently do need mental health care, but if that care isn't appropriate for them it can so easily push them away entirely and leave them more isolated.
This is absolutely it.Cycles of abuse and trauma and mental health services making it very difficult for people to actually come forward to ask for help and then being pathologised more when they reject help for maybe very good reasons. The system is ALWAYS right and the person diagnosed or pathologised is "wrong"or the broken one....never the system or those who work in it.
Thank you so much 🙏
