I apologize ahead of time for the very long comment but I was compelled to express this. I still remember the day, 7 years ago now, somebody on a forum suggested to me 2 guitarists that I’d never heard of. They were Stéphan Forté and Paul Wardingham. I RUclips’d Stéphan first. Just wow. I heard all the elements of guitar virtuosity that I had missed ever since the Shrapnel days with Jason Becker, Marty Friedman, Paul Gilbert among others. I by no means say that to imply that Stéphan’s playing in any way sounded “dated” whatsoever. On the contrary this man blew me away with how contemporary his style is while implementing so much about elite shred guitar that I adore. Stéphan has a unique style that belongs to him like no other. I would describe Stéphan’s compositions as new age classical utilizing a progressive metal approach and I absolutely love it’s darkness and beauty. Stéphan reminds me of a little-known player I also adored growing up named Ronnie LeTekro that plays for a band called TNT. Now, Stéphan without doubt surpasses Ronnie in technique in every single way there’s no question whatsoever about that. However, Ronnie had/has a very…almost romantic approach to his developing solos that have a very classical flare to them as well. But Stéphan is the first player I’ve heard to capture that same romanticism and adds to it the darkest shades of black and with technique that is world class. I remember spending hours listening to Stéphan’s catalogue as excited as that same 14 year old kid sitting in his room back in 1988 wearing out my Jason Becker ‘Perpetual Burn’ cassette lol. I remember saying to my wife “This is what you get when elite talent meets dedication and hard work.” It’s a rare gift Stéphan has and it’s so amazing that he is able to create such beautiful music with those talents and hard work. Then…..as if I could be any more amazed that day….I took a listen to Paul Wardingham later that night and omg….omg…a side of shred guitar I had always wanted to hear but didn’t quite know what it was yet. Shred guitar with a sci fi/spacey ambience that I immediately fell in move with as well! With Paul I immediately thought of a player I loved growing up named Bruce Boullet who played with Paul Gilbert in Racer X. There is a live solo Bruce does off one of their albums that always always intrigued me utilizing a scale (I think) is known as B flat 6. It was shredding, it sounded gorgeous like it was made for a science fiction movie and I loved it. I always wondered why that type of guitar playing wasn’t more explored but then I heard Paul take it to levels that absolutely nobody else has ever taken it. I’m not a music snob by any means and I always try to keep an open mind, but having played guitar for over 34 years, it’s not every day that I am swooned by guitarists I’ve never heard of. They are out there trust me I know that. But to discover these two gentlemen on the same day was a very special day for me as cheesy as it sounds. I hope everyone is moved by music in that way and are constantly in awe of musicians that they deem as virtuosos. Thank you Stéphan Forté…thank you Paul Wardingham. I am a fan for life of both of you now and to have you collaborate on music together is a true masterpiece such as this one is!
Man, I'm seeing your messages just know, and you wouldn't believe how much it touches me. Words like yours are what keeps me motivated to keep on with my work and challenge myself everyday to be better and make the best music I can! From the bottomù of my heart, thank you SO much !!!
Great guitarist, his playing especially in the old Adagio albums is remarkable ! Track 5 (pure) has a ''Satrianish'' feeling, but generally Stephan Forte has very unique guitar tone and i like a lot when he moves in Phrygian's modes !
