Wow, I have watched several videos on chucking, and this is the first time I have ever really understood what is going on during the process. I had kind of given up on learning it. Thank you.
I hardly ever comment but this was so so so helpful, I had been looking for a long time on RUclips trying to learn to Chuck and was not very successful then I found this video, it has helped me massively so thank you so so much , your the BEST.
I'm so happy to hear you found it helpful! When I made this video I remember scanning through youtube for a good chucking instructional and they all seemed rushed so I tried to slow it dow and put as much detail as possible. Have fun chucking!
I never really comment on RUclips Videos. But this, among six other videos I have watched all day, is the only one that actually thought me how to CHUCK. Thank you! 😊😊
holy crap i cannot thank you enough!! every other tutorial makes it sound like chucking is *slapping* the uke strings, so I was really confused when I couldn't make the sound. this is so much simpler than I thought, I have no idea why the other vids didn't just say this. thank you *so* much oh my goodness!
Watched 3 other chucking videos before I came across this one, all the others made no sense but this one- wow I got pretty good at it before the 7 minute mark on this vid- you're very underrated and deserve way more.
Why thank you! I really appreciate that. I think one reason my channel is still quite small is I started posting pretty irregularly 😂. Need to get back to a better schedule! Happy chucking, btw! 🤙
I never comment on videos, but I HAD to this time. This tutorial helped me make more chucking progress in 30 minutes than I previously had in weeks! 😄 My brain and strumming hand just couldn’t grasp how to do it! Your explanation was super helpful because you broke it down for people like me who can barely keep time! I found your channel because of the lick to end in C that you posted on reddit. I am a beginner with aspirations beyond my current “island strum everything” method. (Your strumming video is next on my list). I love your teaching method and am looking forward to more content and watching your channel grow! Also, love your shirt! 😬 Thank you!!
Heather Hamasaki Heather, thanks so much for the kind words and feedback! I’m very glad you found the tutorial helpful! I love hearing that! Hopefully my other stuff will be helpful as well. Take care! 🤙
Can't thank you enough, mate!!!! Tried this for a few days based on other people's explanations, but picked it up almost immediately once I saw how you taught it - got to stage 2 within 30 seconds. Thank you so much. I think the light came on seeing what you did with the side of your hand. Thank again!!
thank u!!! I overthink it and haven't been able to grasp this concept for years. it happens naturally (chucking) when I'm in my zone .. so I really appreciate learning how to do it on command! I have a learning disability too, so I'm extra thankful when sum1 can help me learn something that matters to me...bro thank u!
Omg I wish I'd found this video sooner, I been struggling for ages couldn't work it out at all was sooo confused, you explained so differently to everyone else thank you!
Thank you! This is the best chucking video! I watched so many and just wasn’t getting it, but now it makes sense! It helps to know you can only chuck going down! Now I can finally practice the right way!
I suck at the uke, it's been centuries and I still am an absolute beginner, but you, guy, might achieve to learn me things. You seem to be a great great teacher. Thanks!
The step-by-step breakdown is so helpful for the beginners like me. I have seen so many videos but this one is the most helpful. If you don't mind I have a suggestion. Break the video into different chapters which are easier to navigate. Thanks for the tutorial, please upload more videos. :D
VEry well explained. My muscles seem to constantly suffer from short term memory loss. One question: On the one or the two would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck too?
Thank you SOOO much : I just watched half the video and I could FINALLY chuck !!! Why did it finally work for me here ? Because most of the other people chuck by twisting their wrist down in order to mute the strings with their thumb side of hand (looking like they are lighting a match). Whereas here you don't have to kill your wrist and have a much larger (and flatter) surface for muting ! Plus it seems that muting can happen a millisecond ahead of strumming, so the strings are already disabled when struck, instead of simultaneously. Don't know of this makes sense, but it works !!
Awesome, hope you find some helpful stuff! You can also check out ukewithsmitty.wordpress.com/blog-posts/ for a list of all tabs and lessons I’ve put together in the last couple years
I lost count of all the chucking videos I watched in the past few months, but yours was the most helpful. Now, I just have to be able to repeat the action more often. 😶
Hey Smitty - kudos! - super tutorial on chucking - a bit different technique than some I have seen and could be useful - you do touch the strings with the right side of your palm, correct? A tiny frustration - as I was concentrating on watching your strumming hand, it was often covered up by the writing, strum patterns,... - maybe consider putting these in the top left (yes, I know it might cover up your face but it is the strum hand I need to see...lol!)
Thanks for the feedback, Laurie! Yes, I use the right side of my palm to mute. Good points on the text placement in the video! Something to learn from and improve! 😊🤙
So should I be muting the strings before even strumming the chuck one? All the other videos showed that I should strum then mute, but i am really struggling to do it that way, and it is also killing my fingers doing it that way. If I need to palm the strings first before the strum, that would be a lot easier I think?
Yeah you got it. If you don’t mute slightly before strumming then the strings will be vibrating and you won’t get the sharp chucking sound. The chuck sound only comes from the strings being muted as you strike them
That's a great question! I can't really make a blanket statement for everyone and am only drawing on my own experience and a few people I've seen improve. A few months of that level of consistency and you will almost definitely see MASSIVE improvements and it will start to feel much more automatic. Consistent practice like that adds up really quickly. Keep at it!
It’s so dumb that this is the first video where I realized you’re muting the strings during the down stroke. Also, so many tutorials say to mute twitch the “palm” but it looks like you’re really using the side of your hand, not your palm.

But, how long does it take for muscle memory to kick in with practice of 25 minutes a day seven days a week

Audio is out of sync about 4 seconds
