    I’m a 65 year old woman who has only been playing the ukulele for two months. I was already feeling like my practices were getting in a rut. I just said to my husband yesterday, “What about the rest of the frets on the neck.” Thank you so much for teaching me more about the notes on the fretboard and fresh new ways to practice. It's like this video spoke direct to me. I have been playing 8 months and know a lot of chords, but I'm stuck in the rut of playing with "play alongs". They're good fun, but I don't know a single song that I could play without the screen to follow. Getting outside my comfort zone creates a good feeling when I master smooth transitions to new chords.

    I played acoustic guitar for 12 years and stopped for many more. My biggest regret is never learning the fretboard and theory behind cords and scales. This time around, on the Ukulele, I’ll be learning the correct way.

    Coming from the piano, these tips feel pretty natural and although I just started the ukulele, I missed something like that until now. One of the first things I've done was looking up my notes on the fretboard and try to understand the instrument. At the same time seeing that people only play different chords made me feel over-ambitious and crazy. Thank you very much for telling me that I'm not and playing chords on the ukulele is not the end of the story. Also thank you for the great exercises!

    When I first started with my uke I did an exercise of tapping the table with my fingers in different patterns. This exercise #3 while holding the ukulele is definitely more fun. I'm an intermediate player now but I will start doing this exercise each time I pick up my uke to play now. I also will start learning the notes on the fretboard. I'm so excited about this as it will help with the fingerpicking that I'm just now starting to learn. I turned 70 this year but it's never too late to learn something new : ).

I'm not learning any songs except for one, but I am just working on understanding the fretboard, refining chord changes and finger picking / strumming techniques. I've explored about 100 different ways of playing the same song. I'm gradually adding more chords as I inadvertently pick them up. I'm getting much better and playing far more cleanly. I play guitar and various instruments from the mandolin family I picked up the Uke earlier this year. I love to improvise I am not good with theory as I play by ear. I tend to move around the fretboard and for some reason find that I know where the notes are I need, this is something that I find easier on the Ukulele than I do on the guitar, strange. Love the videos Marco keep em coming.

    Really good points, Marco, thanks for sharing. Tip 3 & 5 is something we should keep in my mind all the time even after the beginner phase.
    Something else I think is worth mentioning might be to perfect the pieces we learn: playing in time (a metronome is really handy) with clarity (no buzzes) and close to no mistakes (e.g. no wrong notes). Diversity is key but making sure you can actually play the pieces so they sound good before moving on to other songs is more important I'd say.

    Tip number one. Learn the fretboard.
    I'm going around the circle of fifths and playing all major triads, first in frets 1-5. then 4-8, then 8-12.
    After I've mastered that, I will do minor, then diminished and augmented.
    Only after that will I start learning seventh chords.
    I started playing a Bach minuet, and hope to start a Fernando Sor Progressive studies later.

      Hey friend, can I just ask, with you being a teacher of ukulele…. How much time would you say you devote to teaching music theory or musicality. How do you teach those things. I’m a beginner myself and I have alot of enthusiasm to play but I find it hard to understand notation, notes, chords, sheet music etc etc.

    • @TheGFeather
      @TheGFeather 3 года назад +1

      @@TheRealColt For my beginners, I tend to focus on how chords interact with each other and using the circle of fifths. Most of my students want to learn how to chord along to songs that they sing, which doesn't call for too much theory. I happen to be a giant theory nerd, and probably end up giving most of them more than they want.
      When I move into finger picking, that's when I start teaching both traditional notation and TAB. I used to disregard tab as being an inferior cousin to 'real' notation. Thankfully I've gotten over that. Both are valid and useful in their place. One thing tab can do is tell you exactly where on the uke to play a particular note, particularly with re-entrant tuning.
      My general approach is when there is a skill/song/idea that requires theory background, that's when I teach it. I don't think you have to have a highly in depth understanding of all the intricacies of theory to be a good player, but understanding why something works conceptually makes it easier to apply to other situations.

      @TheRealColt 3 года назад +3

      @@TheGFeather thank you for that reply. It helps a lot. I’m like you in that I’m nerdy for the details the whys and how’s. if I can comprehend the style of music and break it down I think surely I will better learn and master it, so Il research circle of fifths friend, thanks again for the advice. It’s welcoming to have people so helpful in the comments. The Uke community is strong 💪 and kind I’m glad I’ve gotten into this. Godbless

    Heart of Kentucky. Hey. Great ukelele lesson. I want to practice chords until I get them perfect, then add new chords to what I already know. Katie.

    Hello Marco. I am taking classes since a few weeks, but also am watching your videos. Appreciate them very much and I think you are a great teacher and Ukulele player. One thing that I would like to ask you: could you please in your videos show maybe a better angle of your left hand finger picking work? Or at the beginning show the finger picking pattern for the piece of music. Sometimes it is “hidden” behind the back of the same left hand. And I am having a hard time figuring out your picking pattern. That would be great. Keep up the good videos and thanks again.

    Thank you for the excellent tips. Learning fretboard and applying it for different shapes of chord is my first priority. Looking forward to more learning tips from you.

    wow this is so much what I needed to hear right now....number one...learn the freakin fretboard! plus all the other suggestions are good advice too, but learning the fretboard seems to be the one I have been avoiding the most.
