Thanks much for the upload, Don! I'm disabled and watch these clips through the night because it's difficult to sleep with nerve damage. Your work is appreciated more than you know.
Loved these two together! Johnny Carson and David Letterman were the reason I watched late night television. Nothing worth watching anymore. Sheer comic genius!
These old clips are such a treasure trove of fun. Was only a teen when this aired, and didn't watch every night. But thanks to YT, it's a lot of fun to watch these clips today and google the people and events humorously covered. Great nostalgia. Thanks for the upload!
these days, they don't let guests stretch out segments like that. great appearance, awkward bits and all. thanks for the upload and for including the Lincoln sketch!
It is a therapy, a damn good therapy!!!! (Even for me who back then was taking my first steps into the English language but loved to watch them, particularly Johnny Carson). Unforgettable comedians!
This was great! Carson was awesome as Lincoln, haha! This brought back some memories for me, staying up to watch both Carson and Letterman in Middle School The respect and friendship between these two was always on display when Dave & Johnny got together.
Iconic moment. The master and his apprentice. People always credit Dave with the idea of deconstructing late night tv. But Carson actually started it. Dave *brilliantly* debuilt over it. Think of all the skits and routines that Carson did that just didn't work. That was on purpose. He was a true master and genius.
take my life please...this whole bit would still kill today and you can tell when Johnny asks if Dave would run a skit like that he was proud to still be hip.
I remember the Lincoln hat malfunction and Johnny's explanation. It was one of the few times they ever had to stop-down that show instead of running everything in real time.
David Letterman was sadly right about Johnny Carson when he kept repeating that there wouldn't be another such...and also sadly, there is no other David Letterman. Let alone the two together.
I never got to watch Carson but it's amazing how versatile he was. Characters, singing, dancing, magic... Letterman and Leno couldn't do much of those. Fallon is the closest. He can't do magic but he's a better mimic.
@@DeltaFRFX What a stupid response. Look at my original comment closely. I never said Fallon was better, I said he was closer to Carson in versatility.
Can someone tell me what Letterman means when he says "when I hosted"? Did he ever host the tonight show, even in a guest host capacity or is he talking about his own show?
When Johnny visited Late Night the day he announced his retirement, Dave did a version of the same joke. Johnny asked what happened to the house, Dave said “earthquake got it,” and Johnny said “I’ve been through three of those earthquakes.” So you can guess what happened to the house.
@Long Dave hadn’t bought the Malibu home when he and Michelle divorced. He lost it after he and Merrill broke up. There are videos of the house, with Dave living there, from 1979, 1981, 1986 (the truck) and early 1988 (Merrill’s Cinemax special, “Guide to Glamorous Living”).
I am so glad that I was born when I was and lived through the heyday of both these gentlemen. No one today can touch them. Late night tv is not anecdotes and neutral jokes anymore, it's all cheap political shots injected with the host's (leftist) bias, excessive fake laughter, and "guess what's inside these mystery boxes". None of it is funny. The last good late night guy was Craig Ferguson. I would even put Paar and Steve Allen well above any of the four on today (Kimmel, Fallon, Colbert, Meyers).
It seemed like johnny loved letterman, so why exactly didn't he get the tonight show? It would appear to me that johnny got final say on who got it right? Am I wrong? I honestly don't know
This has to be the funniest letterman routine from a chair on Carson that I have ever seen! It is non stop! He never runs out of material. Thanks!

@Yusuf Baker yup, have been using Flixzone} for months myself =)

That Lincoln set was better than 80 percent of Netflix comedy specials
Brilliant. These two geniuses make me laugh as hard today as they did 30 years ago.
Loved these two together! Johnny Carson and David Letterman were the reason I watched late night television. Nothing worth watching anymore. Sheer comic genius!
The Abe Lincoln bit - no one today could do that. Masterful.
@pete smyth I find these two funny together.
Man, that Lincoln bit was hilarious. I've never seen it before.
Also there were "culture sensitiive" lines you can't say today.
Out of all of Letterman's appearances on the Tonight Show, this is the funniest he'd ever been. The Lincoln sketch was awesome!

This was Fantastic 😊! How did I never witness this before....
David Letterman and Johnny carson = Two of the Greatest talk show hosts ever Bar none 👌👏
these days, they don't let guests stretch out segments like that. great appearance, awkward bits and all.
thanks for the upload and for including the Lincoln sketch!
If you want to see awkward, watch James Cordon. Just not in the funny or inventive way.
Lincoln working the audience is brilliant.
Wonderful piece of TV hist... no, just history! What a chemistry between these 2 masters of entertainment
It is a therapy, a damn good therapy!!!! (Even for me who back then was taking my first steps into the English language but loved to watch them, particularly Johnny Carson). Unforgettable comedians!
Carson - brilliant comedian. Don't understand the thumbs down on this video.
Absolutely wonderful!

The drum roll to the death to end the segment was such a perfect way to end it lol these 2 had crazy timing
Such a true and absolute mentor Johnny was to David!

Actually Steve Allen started much of the talk show format that Carson copied.
The hardest thing about watching these clips is knowing theres nothing like this on TV today. 😣
Abe Lincoln had a little Dangerfield in him 😂
Lincoln sketch is great, nothing like this on late night today. Carson was definitely an original!
They played off each other so well.
Oh my Lord. What a great moment. We miss you Carson.
Everything about this 26m:43s clip is just wonderful, a joy to watch. Thanks for this gem!
Ok, that Abe Lincoln standup bit was legit.
this was good. never watched johnny as a kid i skipped him for letterman
Every time it's an airline/flying joke. You wonder at what point it's deliberate and even Johnny is waiting for it.
Johnny usually helps set it up, because he knew the stories David would tell from the pre-interview.
This is awesome!!
greatness
I will always love these two
take my life please...this whole bit would still kill today and you can tell when Johnny asks if Dave would run a skit like that he was proud to still be hip.
"I don't think this man has seen a jack in quite some time!" :) (11:38)
Let’s hear it for Ed Shaughnessy helping out on the bit.
this is great
Don, if only you had that Willard Scott footage! I want to see clog dancing!
I remember the Lincoln hat malfunction and Johnny's explanation. It was one of the few times they ever had to stop-down that show instead of running everything in real time.
I wonder if Merrill Markoe still lives in that Malibu house she kept when they broke up.
8:38 "...actual vintage material" said the guest ...GEeenius! ...Which of course the host recognized and appreciated.
This is why The Tonight Show was never the same after Johnny. He always played his own comedy skits and loved the dress the roll.
Absolute greatness.
This is royalty right here. Dave and Johnny
This was good material.
Johnny is quick! That set!
"Good-Stuff." Anyone know the name of the closing theme?
Great times. Such incredible talents. 👍
David Letterman was sadly right about Johnny Carson when he kept repeating that there wouldn't be another such...and also sadly, there is no other David Letterman. Let alone the two together.
A mere 30 years ago, gods walked the earth. Or they spoke to each other on a TV stage.
Did Letterman pick up that golf swing from Carson?
Can someone point me to the episode with Dave’s Truck? Thanks!
RUclips has a search feature. Type “Letterman Carson Truck” and you’ll find a number of links.
I don't know if Dave ever interviewed Paul Newman. But he did a quick joke about singing cats, from the audience, on the first CBS show.
He did. Full collection here - ruclips.net/video/9uAKdacV0y0/видео.html

What a weird take... Letterman was way better than Fallon

Her name is Julie Budd. A cabaret singer. Used to open a lot for Frank Sinatra at the end of his career.

What are they implying happened to the place in Malibu?
@@jedijones LOL, maybe. Love that theory. After months of pondering, I'm thinking they're hinting that he lost it in the breakup with Merrill Markoe.

12:15 Dave lost the Malibu house in his divorce settlement - big losses familiar to Johnny on multiple occasions. Their shared private laughs.

It would appear that no, he didn’t have final say on who would succeed him.
Letterman didn't get The Tonight Show because Leno kissed ass and screwed people over to get it. He did it twice with Conan almost 20 years later.
There’s a whole book about it I think- The War for late Night.
