“David Letterman is a good friend of mine.” That must have been the best thing Dave ever heard.

Even though they were laughing, Johnny was dead serious when he asked that question @4:16.

Dave always brought his "A" game whenever he visited Mr. Carson's "Tonight" show. Thanks for sharing!

No one can ever match Mr. Carson and never will.

Dave absolutely left no room for him to continue his show for another 20 years but he went on for another 24 years after this

The brilliance of Johnny remembering the first joke Dave ever told on this show….AFTER stating he’s a good friend of mine.

Johnny asked Dave if he could envision himself 20 years from now (1993). Johnny put his 30 years in in 1993, and Dave wrapped it up in 2015, which was 22 years after Johnny's question. When Johnny was dieing, he was often pursued by the paparazzi and he was angry about it. The press wanted to get shots of him smoking or any other weakness.

To be fair.... I always thought Dave's response was to ..hosting NBC Late Night Show for 30 years.... Rather then being a Late Night host in general. Dave wanted an 11:30 show. I don't imagine him thinking...yeah ill do 11:30 for 10 years.

Gosh, this was Dave when he was pretty much at the peak of his powers.
Things changed a lot when he moved to CBS... maybe too much.

I mean he won the ratings until the Hugh Grant interview which basically showed every celebrity that there was a fast track to good PR if you did something stupid lol

@matthewrock4725 this is the best Leno tonight show description i've ever seen.

Oh the Late Night landscape would have changed had Letterman got that seat instead of Leno.

8:13 - Anybody want to play "Name That Tune"? What is the name of the number the band is playing coming out of that break there?

At the end before final break, Johnny slips and says we hope to see you before you leave, I leave.. hmmm did Johnny already know Dave was leaving NBC?

Dave was visiting the West Coast. Mr. Carson was likely letting him know that he would like get together with him before his return to New York.

I’d say It’s both, Johnny knew he wasn’t gonna be doing this another decade and Dave was obviously fed up with NBC, reminds me of Norm on SNL with Don firing him. Never trust executives

Ted Koppel at 11:30 PM. Back when a network had an intelligent show at late night.

Letterman is overrated and lacks class. His "humor " is lowbrow and rarely funny.

Carson wanted Dave. Amercia wanted Dave. NBC wanted control. If Letterman did Tonight... Like Carson...would own they show. So they went with the safe choice. A Doritos shilling, bitch that could push around. To be fair.... Leno guest host Monday nights for years at this point. NBC executives didn't like Dave making fun of them and their network. They knew... Letterman at Tonight Show would be another 30 years of someone doing what they wanted. With Leno....NBC could do what they wanted. Hey Leno...you're number 1 but you're fired! .....in 5 years. Leno..oh okay. NBC made the wrong choice. But work out better for Letterman. Still.... He should of gotten The Tonight Show. I always saw Letterman CBS show as the continuation/ Sequal to Carsons Tonight Show. Leno Tonight Show...was just The Len Show. But hey...it was better then Fallon.
