      Serious question. What exactly is the information being copied down?

    • @GaryMCurran
      @GaryMCurran 4 года назад +37

      @@hello_im_kt this was two years ago that I posted to this, so I had to go back and listen to it again. The RV-6 penetrated a TFR, or Temporary Flight Restriction area. The TFR ran from the surface to 17,999'. I'm not sure what altitude he was at, but I doubt he was at 18,000' or above, since he would have had to been on an IFR flight plan and in contact with an ATC facility.
      So, when the controller told him to get a pencil ready, he was in trouble. For one, he busted a TFR, not a good thing to do. So, he's going to have a talk with the FAA, probably at a local FSDO, or Flight Standards District Office. At the least, he probably will be referred back to a flight instructor to get some instruction and maybe a check ride. If he went into the FSDO and said something like 'I forgot there was a game (the Super Bowl, really?) he might have gotten away with a slap on the wrist. With this infraction, though, not monitoring 121.5 and not responding quickly, he's probably going to get more than a slap on the wrist. He might have lost his privileges for a period of time, unlikely he'd lose them permanently, unless something else was going on.
      But, pencil and advise ready to copy means a visit with the Feds.

    • @hello_im_kt
      @hello_im_kt 4 года назад +1

      @@GaryMCurran Hi Gary, thank you so much for the informative response. I'm still intrigued why the controller told RV-6 to get a pencil ready. Would't it be more efficient for the controller to directly contact FAA to report the incident? If the controller told RV-6 to write down some information to self report the incident, there is a chance the RV-6 would never report the incident.

    • @GaryMCurran
      @GaryMCurran 4 года назад +19

      @@hello_im_kt Oh, you can believe me when I say the FAA already had all the information at hand. The reason the controller told the pilot was to make sure that the pilot contacted them, and the FAA didn't have to come searching for the pilot. Since the FAA was flying the Citation, they probably had video of the aircraft registration number, and had already looked up the pilot and plane. Anyone can do that by going to the FAA Registry and looking up the 'N-Number' of the aircraft.
      No, the reason they told the pilot to get a pencil ready (pilots hate using pens because things change) was so that he could contact the FAA as soon as he got on the ground. Be assured, the FAA was awaiting his call, and if they hadn't heard from him within 24 hours, they would have started enforcement action against him, with might have included pulling his license permanently.
      NO PILOT ANYWHERE wants to hear those words, because they know what it means to them.

      OK, just throwing this out there. But for those that aren't familiar, TFRs are not common for sports games. This is the SuperBowl, and there is a ridiculous amount of added security. Knowing there is a game going on, and putting two and two together that there are flight restrictions in the area, are separate thought processes. But pilots need to always check for TFRs on their flight plan before take off. What is much more likely here, is that the pilot had a different intended course, and accidentally flew into the TFR. At least that is what I would be saying at that point, lol.

I could see that possibly working for SFO and OAK but SJC is literally about 7ms from Levi's stadium..

    • @StrokeMahEgo
      @StrokeMahEgo 5 лет назад +41

      Most TFRs are accompanied with some language such as "unless otherwise authorized by ATC"
      Most commercial flights would be filing IFR flight plans, have a specific transponder code, and be authorized by ATC to fly a specific route.

    If an aircraft like the R6 is violating that particular airspace and the DHS ir whoever is there escroting decides to shoot them out of the sky.... wouldn't the debris from the falling aircraft put in danger the very same people they're trying to protect?...

    • @weblure
      @weblure 6 лет назад +18

      Ideally, they'd be shot down over the least populated area, miles away from the stadium. Some debris raining down over houses is better than an entire aircraft ramming full speed into a stadium densely packed with people. With the former, there's a chance that some unlucky pedestrian will be struck by a piece of debris, but with the latter, multiple casualties and injuries are guaranteed. It's all about damage control, and also not letting the terrorist do what they want.
      If it was something like and airbus, though... There'd definitely be no happy ending.

      The problem is the size of the TFR's change. You'll notice on the map this guy was 30 miles away. People are doing this a LOT. Every time there is any kind of sporting event on or large event or Presidential visit a TFR (temporary flight restriction) is automatically generated. Many people flying miles and miles away and have no idea the Yankees are playing that afternoon, ect, are getting busted. With the internet it is easy to check, but it's just not something most pilots think about as normal leisurely Sunday afternoon flight pre-planning. Check the weather, check the plane, lets go have some fun. Nope. now it's check the weather, check the plane, then check with the Orwellian named Department of Homeland on what areas they have deemed "temporarily un-free for your own good". The American Police State has gotten completely out control.

In this case US Customs Service operates the plane meaning that it engages planes suspected of import taxation or other crimes committed such as drug transport. At this particular moment it was assigned the task to intercept planes that came into the restricted airspace around the Santa Clara stadium so you would not cheerfully fly in and cause damage to said event without being challenged by American terrorism law enforcement first.

    What's funny is they have TFRs for the super bowl, or some random ass baseball game at Chase field, But not for the Copa America final, where there were 80,000 people in the stands from all over central and South America and possibly other countries over seas. I could be wrong but I checked and didn't see a tfr.
    It's a reactive, blind stab in the dark attempt at security.
    But still. It's not a car, u can't just get in and go. Check the damn notams before you fly!!!!

      I suspect that soccer is such an international sport that terrorists attacking it would find sympathy for their cause diminished, thus the lessened need for a special air security zone. Killing South and Central Americans is not a wise move.

      I agree the incident would be seen as an assault on the American continent as a whole and personally there would be enough western minded defense units to make Desert Storm look like a picnic if the actor was found.

      +John2891 -- In the US, it's actually the law that there must be a TFR over any event which more than 65,000 people are expected to attend. I don't know where the Copa America final you're talking about was held, but if it was in the US and there wasn't a TFR for it, then someone messed up big time.

    Okay the game was on.. But why to divert a plane??? Are VIP where coming in??

    • @martintheiss7666
      @martintheiss7666 8 лет назад

      This was considered a major event for the pride and honor of American culture. The plane was diverted just in case they were actually going to do something unkind.

    • @martintheiss7666

      The presumption of violating the official TFR restricted zone is either a terroristic or assassination attempt say if a head of government is responsible for a flyover. In lay terms this pilot got close enough to the event facility to be deemed able to launch an attack of some kind with professional equipment on hand.

      FAA regs prohibit pilots from operating aircraft within certain distances of stadiums during events. Unless given specific permission to operate within the area.

  • @martintheiss7666
    @martintheiss7666 8 лет назад +2

    Yes there is a game going on that day. All pilots should be aware of DHS and FAA alerts and TFR instructions. You have no reason to be on course for San Jose anywhere south of Fairfield. I am half surprised the intercept was not USAF or USNAC fighter jets. I think the feds were nice about this. You will still lose your license for sure most likely?

      Scared them? You mean like raising a pistol to "scare" an officer who already has his sidearm pointed at you? That RV would have been a scorch mark on the ground if he had done that.

    All over a stupid game. I mean honestly, who gives a shit about the super bowl? It's all so stupid. The video is certainly interesting though.
    Edit: oh wait, this is SB50 that the Broncos won. That's okay then, I like the Broncos

    • @EstorilEm
      @EstorilEm 7 лет назад +1

      It's the only way to provide adequate security for a given event or location, as the radius allows for a predetermined response time and action by various agencies. It would be complete chaos and totally unsafe if there were no TFR's - I guarantee you something bad would have happened by now at the super bowl alone if it weren't for them.

    • @EstorilEm
      @EstorilEm 7 лет назад

      Uh, 50 gallons of 100LL will do quite a bit of damage to a high density stadium with 90k people in it. Get some assholes to fill it up with some other kind of explosives, and you've got an entirely different ball game (no pun intended) - but yeah you're totally wrong, this is an ideal terrorist target, and TFR's are a great way to provide early warning and situational awareness to DHS and other agencies monitoring suberbowl security.
