    • @spvillano
      @spvillano 5 лет назад +26

      That's a contest where all sides lose. The bin loses, as they're robust enough to be worked on the ramp, but only just. The plane loses, as it'll need structural inspection. The cargo or passengers lose their flight.
      It's called getting real expensive, really quickly. But, nobody was injured or killed.

    • @Suisfonia
      @Suisfonia 4 года назад +1

      @Joe Sudz Not sure how you can call that winning when those bins can cause damage to the planes and thus render them incapable of flying; requiring passengers to get another flight and thus costing the airlines (and passengers, for that matter) time and money.

    I love pilots who can crack jokes every now and then. But wind shear is no joke, seeing the Mentour 360 video of trying to keep a plane under control during wind shear, he had to have his hands full for a bit.

    • @Yora21

      We had quite considerable wind shear landing in Hamburg last week, where for some reason all takeoffs and landings were on the North-South runway, in an area that is almost always West winds. Looking out over the left wing during final approach wasn't very funny. (But the touchdown went butter smooth, though.)

    I was the first officer in the SW plane they keep showing and none of our audio was in the clip. We were talking to north ramp and I am the one who told them that it looks like a tornado on the field.... shortly after they shut the airport down. We had to taxi west bound as there were several small funnel clouds above us right after the first Tornado passed. That was a crazy day for sure.

    Both tornadoes that hit Ft. Lauderdale were EF0 on the Fujita scale, meaning sustained winds of 65 to 85 mph (105 to 137 km/h). Florida has a very high rate of tornadoes, but most are EF0 or EF1. These are small and rarely travel more than a couple miles/kilometers on the ground. So Florida tornadoes aren't as menacing as what most people think of: the wide, strong tornadoes that hit the Central US and can travel on the ground for 20+ mi (30+ km) (some can even travel over 100mi/160km!!) and have winds over 200mph (320km). Of course, even EF0 tornadoes are a major hazard to aviation, especially to aircraft at low altitudes at/around airports.

      Assuming you're on instrument flight rules, you have to keep flying the same route until ATC tells you to do something else. If everyone just diverted to their alternate, you'd have midair collisions.
      Also, approach controllers already make broadcast messages like this. "Attention all aircraft, information delta current at baltimore..."

    Sounds strange that pilots could not see the twister, but at that altitude everything is vague. I agree with the ones that said they would just shut down their engines and wait. Can't play with a tornado! But, the video showed how difficult the twister was to see. The power alone lets people know that it is dangerous. Thanks for this video to show us how calm ATC is and that they have a sense of humor.

    The tornado first touched the ground at the edge of the airport: nwschat.weather.gov/p.php?pid=201804110239-KMFL-NOUS42-PNSMFL The chance of that happening is very small. It is very surprising that a small plane would alert the tower first about the rotation. Doesn't ATC have a radar that can detect rotation? If so, why didn't they detect it earlier? Rotation begins in the clouds then drops to the ground. I'm not a meteorology expert, but I doubt that process would be instantaneous...it probably takes a few minutes, which would have given radar and ATC watching the radar the time to detect it and alert aircraft (even if it was something like 30-60 seconds, that should still be time for software to detect the rotation signature and display an alert/indicator). SIL86 is a tiny 30-40 passenger propjet for intrastate flights in Florida and to the Bahamas. It would have been worse for them than JetBlue (probably an A320/A321). I recall a watching an air disaster show episode about a Delta flight that crashed short of the runway during a downburst in the 80s, prompting better weather radar including wind detection at airports.

    10 April 2018 at 3:25 p.m. EDT
    Fort Lauderdale - Hollywood International Airport TORNADO
    Rating: EF-0
    Length: 3 miles
    Width: 60 yards
    National Weather Service, Miami South - Florida (Storm Survey):
    Multiple eyewitness videos showed a tornado touched down along the northwestern side of Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport near I-595, leading to damage to cargo and storage containers in the FedEx facility on the north side of the airfield. The tornado then moved east-southeast along the airport's northern taxiway, causing damage to a jet bridge on the north side of the terminal. The damage path becomes diffuse as it likely crossed Perimeter Road and US 1 along the immediate east side of the airport. The tornado then moved into the extreme southern end of Port Everglades, where multiple cargo containers were flipped and damaged, along with eyewitness reports of port-a-johns being tossed about. The tornado then likely crossed the intracoastal waterway, and moved across the barrier island within Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Port before moving offshore into the Atlantic Ocean.

    I'm just an aviation/ATC follower because I find it interesting, not a pilot. Is there really no way for an airport to know that there is a tornado aside from direct visualization? That's what it appears happened. Like, no warnings on radio or weather service? That's a little scary 😱

    • @pplusbthrust
      @pplusbthrust 2 года назад +2

      The pie slice on the dartboard the 'weather service' uses to forecast
      weather events is tiny for tornadoes, so the darts rarely hit there.

    • @mpk6664
      @mpk6664 Год назад

      I know this is two years old, but QLCS tornados are extremely difficult to warn due to them usually being very short lived and the fact that they can develop/recycle extremely quickly. One can form and die within a span of a minute and be ready to drop another one a minute later.

    Does FAA Radio Etiquette utilize the word, "Break" or the phrase, "Break, break, break" when trying to get an urgent message through. There was an unidentified station transmission while FLL TWR was sending radio traffic. My old section chief used to say, "shut the fuck up you're in a fire mission!" Something as small as a penny can bring down an engine. It can tear up the blades and cause severe damage. After being in the middle of a storm such as was shown on the video, it was absolutely prudent of those pilots to have every thing inspected for safety.

    Next to a bomb or a fire and an airport this is everybody's biggest nightmare not only do you have potential damage from debris you also have to be concerned about damage the ground equipment and also injury to your personnel remember an airport is flat space with as few Hills as possible around it I'm glad everyone was okay but quite a few people needed a drink afterwards an ef-1 or 0 at an airport is not a joke anything higher and you're talking major damage
