Ron Howard was on Conan O'Brian's podcast and he said that the original writers had Opie's character playing a little wise ass like the Rusty Hamer character on Danny Thomas, Rance Howard suggested to Andy that maybe it would be better to have Opie's character really respect his father, and the rest is history. Can't even envision it the other way!
Bob I forgot to tell you I am subscribed on your other channel classic rock and I never get a notification for that channel then I forget about it sometimes Much Love Jean
Some children have been named for fictional characters. During the golden days of radio Amos and Andy were popular names. Ginger Zee was named after a fictional movie star. Dick Van Patten named one of his sons Nels after his I Remember Mama character. Opie isn't a name you hear very often. That's probably one reason it's so memorable. Steve Quincy wasn't the only one to note it rhyming with Dopey. Ron Howard did get called that off camera. I don't think he named any of his children Opie.
I worked with a guy who was named Opie. His real name was James, but everyone him called him Opie. I dont know why. But everyone called him Opie. I think it had pazzaz. Have a blessed day everyone
That’s interesting about Opie. When I was a kid I used to think about how when someone would say, “You’re a goober”. I thought that saying came from the Goober character on TAGS. Haha.

I always wondered if Jack Dodgson’s character of Howard Sprague was named to honor Howard McNear.

You know who his son is, right? 🤷🏼♂️🤓😎✌🏼🤠
Buck Taylor, Newlie O'Brien from "Gun smoke". Blsgs, Hope the spelling is correct!
It had to be Opie. Because the bully would not
have been able to call him dopey Opie when
he wanted to go fishing with his friends.

There's two potential opies opie taylor could be named after? The nordic origination.sure seems obscure
While it worked in Mayberry, I always thought how awful it would be to have that name. In my neighborhood, you would have surely been called Dopie.
There was that one mean boy who made fun of him and called him “Dopie Opie”. He was the new kid, his last name was Quincey
Always wondered where that name came from. 😊

Great one! Bob You are so smooth in Your presentation my Friend.
We asked this question a long time ago.
You look like you are feeling so much better.
Barney is a nic. Bernard is his actual name.
Bob, check out the new interview with Ron Howard on the Conan O'Brien podcast. He talks about TAGS in a segment.
How about that?
It's a godawful name wherever it came from.
He'd be teased to death in school, being called "dopey".
Is Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's child Shilo Pitt...'Pile-Ah Shit'?
Interesting! ❤
I thought it had to do with his Opium addiction LOL😊
